Castle Arts Harmonious 72 Colored Pencil Set: A Gorgeous Muted Palette Best Paired With an Existing Collection
The Harmonious 72 set delivers beautifully curated muted tones, layering, and opacity, but it works best as an addition to a set you already own.
Introduction
The Castle Arts Harmonious 72 set is a curated colored pencil collection built around muted, coordinated tones rather than a full-spectrum palette. If you have used Castle Arts pencils before, the core quality here is consistent with the rest of the range: the lay down, the layering, and the pigment behavior are all familiar. For newcomers, the set still offers a genuinely pleasant drawing experience at its price point.
The big question with this set is not whether the pencils are good, because they are. It is whether the palette itself fits how you work.
A Palette Built on Muted, Coordinated Tones
The Harmonious collection is organized into beautifully grouped color families. The upper rows lean into bronze and dark grays, then move into lighter tones, plums such as Smeria, gray greens like Wild Time and Pine Green, and Storm Gray, a greenish gray that is genuinely lovely. Further down you find Rosy Stone, then blues including Duck Egg, Mosaic Blue, Forget Me Not, and Petrol Blue, followed by softer shades like Mink, Dark Pearl, Dusty Lavender, Sweet Lilac, and Purple Dusk.

This is the palette’s defining characteristic: nearly everything sits in a muted, tonal range. That makes it fantastic for botanical work, especially where leaves lack a full photosynthesis green and read as gray greens instead. The set also includes a French Gray, a warm gray that many sets leave out entirely.
The trade-off is coverage of darks and saturated colors. The set lacks deep darks and strong saturated blues, so while it can produce lovely artwork on its own, especially in adult coloring books, it is genuinely limited as a standalone set for detailed illustration work.
Pencil Build, Barrel Details, and Documentation
Each pencil has a 3.8mm core in a 7.7mm barrel, which makes for a nicely hefty, well-balanced pencil. The barrel is fully color coordinated to the pigment, with a silver ring separating the bulk of the barrel, the Harmonious range name at the end cap, and the pigment name plus an alphanumeric code printed along the side, consistent with other Castle Arts pencils.

One area where Castle Arts consistently does well is documentation. The Harmonious set includes a full color pamphlet covering the palette, technique guidance such as contour, cross-hatching, stippling, and layering, plus a glossary of colored pencil terminology and a short tutorial. A blank swatch card printed on quality Bristol vellum paper, sized to fit inside the tin, is provided with color names and numbers listed.
Keep in mind that printed or lasered color charts on pamphlets and tins are never exact matches, so creating your own swatches is always worthwhile.
Performance and Layering
Swatching on Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Vellum showed the range of each color well. Starting with a heavy application and fading out to lighter layers, none of these pencils struggled to reach full pigment strength, which is a common weakness in cheaper sets. Layering was smooth and reliable.

The cores also have enough opacity to perform well on black paper, with a randomly selected group of muted and more vibrant shades coming out cleanly against the dark surface. If you enjoy working on black paper, that is another point in this set’s favor.
On Fabriano Artistico hot press extra white 100% cotton paper, the pencils layered beautifully with no issues at all.
Buying Advice
The most important consideration before buying is that open stock replacement is not available. Like most budget-range brands, Castle Arts does not sell individual colors from this set separately, so you are buying the full tin, not topping up individual pencils.
As a standalone set, it works acceptably for coloring books and softer, tonal artwork, but it lacks the super darks and saturated colors needed for more demanding subjects. In practical use, creating a bird on a branch required borrowing a handful of colors from other sets, mainly lighter browns for the wood and feather work, and a more saturated blue would have helped as well. That said, layering on the cotton paper was flawless throughout.
If you already own a broader set, the Harmonious 72 slots in beautifully, adding gray greens, lavenders, French Gray, and dusty tonal shades that most collections simply do not include. Even Castle Arts’ own in-house artist frames it as a set best incorporated into other sets you already have.
Conclusion
The Castle Arts Harmonious 72 is a beautiful, well-made collection with a genuinely gorgeous curated palette, generous documentation, and pencils that layer, blend, and hold pigment strength well beyond their price bracket. Just go in with the right expectation: as an addition to an existing collection, it is superb, and on its own it is capable but limited.
