Bubba Goose Duffel Review: A Featherweight 34L Duffel With Serious Materials
A minimalist X-Pac VX21 duffel from a Seattle workshop brand that weighs just over a pound while swallowing a huge main compartment.
Introduction
If you want a large but incredibly light duffel with a simple design, the Bubba Goose duffel is an easy bag to recommend. I tested the large X-Pac version on a recent trip to Montana: it fits in an overhead bin, weighs almost nothing, and is effortless to pack and carry. It is also a refreshingly honest piece of gear, with no padding, dividers, or gimmicks getting in the way of the space you actually paid for.
Materials and Build Quality
Bubba Goose is based in Seattle, Washington, and builds all of its gear in-house using upcycled materials. Most of the line uses X-Pac sailcloth fabrics, which keep the bags lightweight while remaining extremely durable. This lighter-weight model is made from VX21 X-Pac in white, and the bottom of the bag gets a much thicker 1000D Cordura panel for abrasion resistance.

The build quality is excellent for such a simple design. You get huge size 10 YKK zippers on the main compartment, leather zipper pulls, thick webbing straps, and loops for attaching extra gear. The two carry handles are on the thin side, but they feel sufficient for a bag this small and light.
Size and Carry-On Compatibility
The large 34L model measures 22 inches long and 11 inches wide and deep. That is carry-on compliant for most airlines, though it is slightly too big to slide under a seat. If you want a personal-item-sized duffel instead, the smaller 11L version is the way to go. The weight difference between sizes is only a couple of ounces, so going large costs you almost nothing.

Weight is where this bag genuinely stands apart: the whole duffel comes in at just 1.1 lb (about 0.49 kg). For a 34L bag, that is remarkably little, and it shows up as easier lifting into bins and trunks.
Exterior Features and Pockets
Because this is a very simple duffel, there is not much happening on the outside. Several nylon loops along the sides let you lash extra gear on top, and a strip of Velcro on one side is there if you want to add patches. There are only two pockets, one on each end: they are thin but deep, running all the way down to the Cordura base, which makes them handy for smaller items you want to keep separate.

Carrying options are basic but functional: the two top handles for short moves, and a long shoulder strap that clips into larger buckles at either end of the bag. The strap is thin, but a leather section provides a little extra padding.
Interior Space and Organization
The interior is what makes this bag great. One giant zipper opens into a single huge compartment with no dividers, no pockets, and no padding, so you get essentially the full 34L capacity to work with. That is the whole point of the design.
In practice, you will probably want some form of internal organization. Packing cubes work well here: I have been using a medium and a small cube for clothes and still had plenty of room left for jackets, a toiletry kit, a gear pouch, sweaters, and even a bulky winter jacket. Smaller items can live in the two end pockets, or in a tech pouch in the main compartment. One thing to note: there is no laptop compartment, so a laptop would need its own padded sleeve.
Carry Comfort
The handles work fine, and the shoulder strap can be worn on one shoulder, flipped around, or cross-body on the opposite shoulder. With a normal travel load, the thin strap is perfectly usable. If you plan to haul a lot of heavy gear, you can upgrade to an aftermarket strap, since the exterior hooks accept one easily.

Things to Consider Before Buying
The only real drawback is the shoulder strap. It has a leather lining and works fine with lighter loads, but if you carry a lot of heavy gear, it may not offer enough padding. You should also expect zero bells and whistles: no internal organization, no laptop sleeve, and minimal exterior features. That simplicity is the trade-off for the weight and the huge open capacity.
Buying Advice
This duffel makes the most sense for minimalist travel and gear hauling. It is small enough to fit in an overhead bin, light enough to carry everywhere, and tough enough thanks to the X-Pac and Cordura construction to live in a car trunk or come along camping. If your packing style relies on internal dividers or a dedicated laptop slot, look elsewhere; if you are happy organizing with packing cubes, this bag is hard to beat at barely over a pound.
Conclusion
The Bubba Goose duffel is a lightweight, durable, minimalist bag built from great materials with a focus on maximizing internal space. You give up padding and organization, but you get an extremely light 34L duffel that works brilliantly for camping, trunk storage, and overhead-bin travel. If that trade appeals to you, this is one of the more compelling simple duffels available.
