Introduction
Portable power has traditionally meant choosing between bulky power stations that are awkward to carry and small battery packs that lack the capacity for real off-grid work. BLUETTI’s new Handsfree backpack power stations aim to close that gap by integrating a power station directly into a weather-resistant molle-style backpack.
The Handsfree line comes in two sizes: a smaller 42L backpack with a 268Wh power station and 300W inverter, and a larger 60L backpack with a 512Wh power station and 700W inverter. Both are designed for hikers, campers, cyclists, photographers, drone pilots, and anyone who needs reliable power while moving on foot.

Design and Build Quality
Both Handsfree models share the same thin, upright design with a carrying handle built into the top. The backpacks themselves are IPX4 rated water resistant, with rubberized zipper enclosures that include a lip to keep rain from getting in through the zipper. A combination lock is available on the top if you want to secure the contents.
The molle webbing allows you to hang carabiners and attach additional gear. There are multiple external pockets for cell phones, tools, and other small items, plus a flap with a large pocket underneath. A rainfly is included in one of the pockets for severe weather conditions.
The main outside pocket expands significantly when unzipped all the way around, roughly tripling in thickness to accommodate clothes and bulkier items. Below that, a pocket system with velcro-adjustable dividers includes a thick, expandable, padded sleeve that fits a 14 to 15-inch laptop.
The power station sits in the section closest to your back. A flap with velcro secures it in place, and there is extra storage space above it. Two vented side flaps provide full access to the power station while it is in use, with downfacing holes that keep rain out while allowing heat to escape.

Power Station Features
Both models use the same 4000-cycle LFP battery chemistry, with the larger unit offering 512Wh and the smaller 268Wh. The larger power station weighs around 17 lb and measures 12 x 15 x 4 inches, while the smaller weighs 11 lb and measures 11 x 11 x 4 inches.
The basic BLUETTI screen shows input and output wattage, time to charge or discharge, and battery percentage with icons. Both units include AC and solar charging cables, so you do not need to buy them separately. The solar input uses an XT60 connector, which is a newer approach for BLUETTI.
Each unit has a single pure sine wave inverter outlet. The larger model provides 700W while the smaller provides 300W. Both support BLUETTI’s proprietary power lifting feature, which can run some larger resistive loads.
AC charging can bring either unit to 80% in 45 minutes. Both are solar chargeable with a built-in MPPT controller. The larger unit supports up to 350W of solar input from 12 to 45 volts, charging in about 2 hours. The smaller supports 200W from 12 to 28 volts, charging in about an hour and a half.
Both can also be charged from 12 or 24 volt sources at 8 amps for a 3 to 6 hour top-up. Interestingly, the larger unit has no 12V output at all, while the smaller offers a 12V 7 amp output via a single 5521 barrel plug. If you need a 12V output in a portable package, the smaller 42L model is the only choice.
The larger model offers a pair of 100W USB-C Power Delivery outputs alongside two 5V USB-A ports. The smaller model offers a single USB-C port and the same pair of USB-A ports.
Both units include a 20-millisecond UPS feature, which may seem unusual for a backpack product but adds flexibility for powering sensitive electronics. Bluetooth app access lets you check solar charge rate and battery capacity while hiking. There is no Wi-Fi built in.
Solar Charging and Portability
The backpacks are designed to hang BLUETTI solar panels off the back, allowing you to charge while on the move. The recommended option for use inside the backpack is the 120W BLUETTI folding panel, which folds up to fit inside the pack when not in use.
Since the two models support 200W and 350W of solar respectively, you can also opt for the larger BLUETTI folding panels. You can supply your own panels as long as you stay within the MPPT voltage limits. The included solar cable means you do not need to purchase one separately.

Performance Testing
In battery capacity testing, the larger model scored 455 watt-hours out of 512, an impressive 89%. The AC battery capacity test scored 440 watt-hours out of 512, a solid 86%.
The phantom load parasitic drain test on the smaller model used only 7 watt-hours over a 24-hour period, meaning it would take about 2.5 days to drain the 268Wh battery. This includes both the 12V and USB outputs being turned on for the full period. The AC consumption on the 300W inverter used a modest 35 watt-hours over 6 hours, or about 140 watt-hours over 24 hours.
The 700W inverter handled a sustained 730W load for over 5 minutes without issues. It reached a maximum of 1030W before dropping out. Running the AC inverter at max produced a whisper-quiet 44 dB from a meter away.
The solar input is hard limited to 8.2 amps. At 12 volts it accepted 95 watts, at 24 volts 195 watts, at 36 volts 288 watts, and at 45 volts the full 350 watts. It shut off at 48 volts, confirming 45 volts as the upper limit.
Charging from AC wall power offers three modes: turbo at 600W, standard at 350W, and silent at 150W. Fan noise measured 44 dB in turbo, 43 dB in standard, and 42 dB in silent mode. Solar charging at 350W also measured around 42-43 dB.
Simultaneous charging from solar and AC works with solar priority. The unit accepts solar power first, then draws whatever additional power it needs from AC grid power.
The UPS test passed with flying colors. With the unit plugged into the wall and powering a laptop, cutting wall power caused no interruption to the laptop. The unit continued running the laptop and resumed charging from the wall when power was restored.
The USB-C Power Delivery outputs delivered a combined 185W across two ports, with one showing 91W and the other 96W, close to the expected 100W each.
The inverter also passed the amplifier interference test, producing no audible buzzing or clicking when powering audio equipment.

Buying Advice
Both models launch at reasonable prices that include the backpack and cables. The smaller 42L model with the 268Wh power station is priced at $299, while the larger 60L with the 512Wh power station is $399. Bundle deals with a 120W folding solar panel are also available.
One notable limitation is that BLUETTI offers the backpack without the power station, but not the power station without the backpack. This forces the product into a niche market. The power stations themselves are well suited for powering computers, laptops, and radios, and can be laid on their side with equipment placed on top, since the fans are in the front and back.
The lack of a 12V output on the larger model is a curious decision, since those who need 12V for items like a fridge are likely to need the larger battery capacity. Many users would likely trade one of the USB-A ports for a 12V output.
For recommended solar, the 120W BLUETTI panels in the bundle are the best fit for use inside the backpack. Larger panels do not fold down to the right size.
Conclusion
