5 South America Snowboard Resorts to Keep Your Season Rolling
Five standout resorts across Argentina and Chile, from big mountain chairlifts to volcano riding and summer park laps.
Introduction
When the northern hemisphere season winds down, the southern Andes are just getting started. Argentina and Chile offer a surprising range of snowboarding, and no two of these five resorts feel alike. Here are five favorites worth considering if you want to keep your season rolling through the summer months.
Cerro Catedral, Argentina: Size, Variety and Views
The biggest resort in South America sits outside Bariloche. Fly into Buenos Aires, take a connecting flight to Bariloche, then it is about a 30-minute drive to the mountain. What stands out immediately is the sheer size and variety of terrain: fun groomers, tree runs, alpine riding, and easy access to some genuinely world-class backcountry.

The views alone justify the trip. From the top you look down over a lake below and a ring of unique, jagged peaks surrounding the resort, and the scale of the place draws an international crowd. Some of the best backcountry lines here sit just outside the resort boundary. If you want a big resort with plenty to explore and a convenient town nearby, this is the one.
La Hoya Resort, Argentina: Local and Family-Friendly
Further south in Argentina, near the town of Esquel, La Hoya is a smaller resort with a very local, family-friendly feel. It may not have the scale of Cerro Catedral, but it impressed with mellow, fun runs and backcountry access that leads to some seriously impressive big mountain lines.
The local vibe is the reason to come back. Esquel is a charming, welcoming town with easy access to the mountain, and the whole area just feels like home. If you prefer a quieter, community-oriented resort over a big international hub, La Hoya fits that description well.
Las Leñas, Argentina: Big Mountain Riding from the TS Marte Chair
Fly into Mendoza and it is roughly a three-hour drive to Las Leñas. Most of the resort is mellow, with a fun family atmosphere, but the reason serious riders make the trip is the TS Marte chair, quite possibly one of the best big mountain chairlifts anywhere.

Accessing the terrain from the top requires avalanche gear, so bring your beacon, shovel and probe, and ride with a partner. What waits up there is world-class big mountain riding that is hard to beat. If big mountain lines are your thing and you want a southern hemisphere fix, Las Leñas delivers.
Valle Nevado, Chile: A Bit of Everything
Valle Nevado sits north of most Chilean resorts, reachable from Santiago, with many riders staying in the small town of Farellones about a half hour away. What makes it special is the range of riding on offer. Across all the South American resorts visited, this was the only one with the park open the entire time.

The terrain park is well maintained, regularly gets new features, and has a dedicated button lift so you can rack up quick park laps all day. Beyond the park, the resort has a nice flow, plenty of chairlifts and surface lifts covering one of the larger resort areas in Chile, powder stashes reachable through traverses, and backcountry access with big mountain lines of its own. If you want variety so you never get bored, Valle Nevado has a bit of everything.
Corralco, Chile: Snowboarding a Volcano
For something completely different, Corralco sits near the town of Malalcahuello in southern Chile, on the Lonquimay volcano. Riding a volcano gives the mountain a very distinct feel in how it flows and lays out, and although it seems small at first, there is plenty of terrain to keep exploring. A full week there still turned up new lines every day.

The highlight is the hike to the top of the volcano and the chance to ride into the crater itself, a rare backcountry experience few mountains can offer. The vibe is thoroughly local, with mostly Chilean riders and a friendly, welcoming crowd rather than international tourists. If you want a real adventure that feels unlike anywhere else, Corralco is the pick.
Conclusion
Ranking these five is nearly impossible because each one is special in its own way: Cerro Catedral for scale and views, La Hoya for local charm, Las Leñas for big mountain lift access, Valle Nevado for all-around variety, and Corralco for a one-of-a-kind volcano experience. The people treat visitors like family across South America, so any of these can line up with your style of riding. Pick the one that matches what you want from the mountains and keep your season going all year.
