Introduction

Halfway through the year is a good moment to separate the shoes that genuinely earned their keep from the ones that quietly slipped out of the rotation. This list pulls together the releases that delivered across training miles, race days, and everything in between, ranked from fifth down to the clear pick of the year so far.

How These Picks Were Chosen

The rankings combine long-term testing impressions, mileage logged in each shoe, and real race performances where applicable. A shoe that only feels good out of the box does not make a list like this; it has to keep delivering mile after mile.

Expect a mix here: a stacked marathon trainer that made training consistency easier, a racer that priced below the super shoe norm while punching well above its weight, and a budget daily trainer that proved just how good affordable running shoes have become.

5. Nike Alphafly 3

The Alphafly 3 took a little time to win its place here, but with well over 100 miles logged it has become one of those shoes that is genuinely a pleasure to reach for. The midsole is superbly forgiving and it kept getting better as the shoe broke in, losing the clunkier feel of its predecessor. A more subtle upper rounds out the update, and aside from some purely cosmetic wear the shoe is holding up well.

What really earns it a spot is how usable it is beyond race day: easy miles, occasional treadmill sessions, and longer runs with faster sections all work. It is dynamite for long runs in particular, and credit goes to the shoe for helping build the consistency behind a half marathon personal best.

4. Saucony Endorphin Pro 4

Saucony’s top-tier marathon racer returns as a big upgrade, with a layer of PWRRUN HG foam on top of the main midsole that genuinely energizes the ride. It feels a step livelier than many other super shoes, and it has been almost perfectly usable straight out of the box for both training and racing without needing to be babied.

3. Adidas Adizero SL2

The biggest surprise of the year. Picked up for under £100, the SL2 delivers far more than its price suggests. It is light, nimble, and surprisingly well cushioned, with enough underfoot comfort for longer runs up to around 13 or 14 miles. Marathon training on very long runs might call for a touch more cushion, but for most runners this is an easy recommendation.

There are a couple of small gripes: the laces are a little thin and flimsy, and the supplied insoles feel overly soft, though swapping them improves both responsiveness and fit. The outsole skips premium rubber, but traction and grip are genuinely good for the money. As a daily trainer, Adidas has nailed it.

2. Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3

The only reason this sits at number two rather than higher is that it has not yet been raced in, and race-pace efforts are hard to replicate in training. Everything else points to something special: Puma has made it lighter than the previous version, more compressive, more cushioned, and more aggressive, with extra foam in the heel making it a true marathon contender.

1. Adidas Adizero Metaspeed Sky Paris

The best release of the year so far, and it is not close. Three personal bests in this shoe, across the 10K and the half marathon, speak louder than any spec sheet. The trampoline-like feel from the plate positioning in the midsole is the standout, the perforated laces make lockdown effortless, and the foam keeps giving mile after mile.

Even now, with some smoothing on the outsole rubber and visible wear, it remains a viable race option. At around £220 it undercuts several other super shoes while delivering more, and the combination of plate geometry, a slightly lower drop feel, and very low weight makes it simply enjoyable and exciting to run in.

Honourable Mentions

Two shoes just missed the cut. The Hoka Cielo X1 is a lovely cruising shoe for steady efforts, noticeably lighter than its closest rival and built on foam that shows Hoka moving forward, but a £250 price tag and a hefty slab of outsole rubber hold it back.

Overall Buying Advice

If you want one race day shoe, the Metaspeed Sky Paris is the standout value and performance pick of the year so far. If you want a racer that doubles as a training option, the Endorphin Pro 4 and Deviate Nitro Elite 3 both offer more versatility. And if budget matters most, nothing else on this list comes close to the Adizero SL2 at its price point.

Conclusion

The pattern across this list is clear: the best shoes of 2024 so far are the ones that make you want to lace up more often. A stacked trainer that rewards consistency, a budget daily that outperforms its price, and a plate shoe stacked with personal bests set the standard. The second half of the year has plenty still to come, and it will take something special to knock the top spots loose.
