Best Race Shoes 2025: Six Super Shoes Ranked Head to Head
Six of the best super race shoes of 2025 compared on fit, midsole, outsole durability and value, with one clear overall winner.
Introduction
There are a lot of race options out there right now, and if you only have budget for one pair, the choice can feel overwhelming. This comparison covers six of the strongest 2025 super shoes: the Saucony Endorphin Elite 2, the ASICS Metaspeed Sky Paris and Metaspeed Edge Paris, the Adidas Adios Pro 4, the Nike Alphafly 3, and the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3. Each was scored out of five in four categories: upper fit and lockdown, midsole, outsole, and value. Everything here comes from hands-on experience with close to 100 miles in almost all of them, so take it as one informed perspective rather than gospel. Every runner is different, and a slightly different running style can change which shoe works best.
Upper Fit and Lockdown
The Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 and the Saucony Endorphin Elite 2 are a little finicky when it comes to getting lockdown right over the top of the foot. Both use laces that are simply too flexible, and swapping them out for stiffer laces made a noticeable difference. Both are extremely light, around 8.1 oz in a UK 11. The Puma has perhaps the better fit of the two, but only by a hair.

The Adios Pro 4 and the Metaspeed Edge Paris offer really great lockdown over the top of the foot. The laces in the Adidas shoe are perhaps not perfect, but the serrated laces on the ASICS models are excellent. Both the Sky Paris and Edge Paris have a fairly baggy toe box, which may suit runners with more voluminous toes, and because the lockdown is so good you can cinch them up to get a really secure fit. They are exceptionally breathable too.
The winner for comfort and ease of lockdown is the Alphafly 3. It is not overly generous and simply fits like a glove. On race day you do not want to waste time fiddling with pressure points, and the Alphafly 3 makes that easy.
Midsole: Softness, Propulsion and Protection
If softness is your priority, the Saucony Endorphin Elite 2 is ridiculously soft, to the point it may be too soft for some. It is mega forgiving, though that plushness ties it to half marathon and marathon use rather than faster racing.

The ASICS Metaspeed Sky and Edge Paris midsole formula, FF Turbo Plus, is exceptional. There is real bounce and real return, and it is easily the best performer over 5K to half marathon. The very narrow nature of these shoes is the one hesitation for full marathon use, though the upcoming ASICS launch with a wider base and the same foam may resolve that for some runners.
The Adios Pro 4 offers much more surface area and does not feel narrow, especially in the forefoot. It balances softness and return well without bottoming out, which makes it the most versatile of the bunch. The Alphafly 3 is tuned for half marathon and marathon pace, and at 5K it feels like a little too much shoe, with a significant heel width. The Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 works better from 5K through to half marathon for the same reason: not quite enough heel width late in a marathon. It suits mid-to-forefoot runners best. Its foam is exceptionally reliable, resilient and durable.
Outsole Grip and Durability
The Endorphin Elite 2 has been surprisingly durable given its super soft foam, with a sticky, coarse outsole that Saucony has really nailed for road and concrete use.

There are more things that can go wrong with the Alphafly 3 outsole. With careful use and a little shoe glue, a pair got through to about 100 miles with very little foam degradation, just minor paint peeling at the back. The rubber is not as durable as some rivals, but improved heel coverage helps, and grip is strong when landing mid to forefoot.
The Adios Pro 4 and the Deviate Nitro Elite 3 are the outsole winners, with almost no wear after 100 miles. The polyurethane compound on those models genuinely works and is very hard to fault.
Value for Money
The Adios Pro 4 stands out on value at £220 in the UK: a nice soft midsole, one of the most versatile rides in the group, and very usable.

The Puma will work for some, and the outsole durability means plenty of miles, but the narrow heel and the extreme lateral taper in the toe box will put people off, especially at marathon distance. The Alphafly 3 is an expensive purchase but a real smooth operator at half to full marathon pace and a genuinely addictive model to run in, which softens the retail price. The Metaspeed series is the most exhilarating out of the box, next-level in bounce and fun, though the foam starts to deteriorate and get torn up quickly, which limits long-term usability. The Endorphin Elite 2 is the softest shoe tested, but at £280 the others are simply a little more versatile.
Conclusion
Final scores: the Saucony Endorphin Elite 2 finished with 11 points, the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 with 15, the Nike Alphafly 3 with 16, both ASICS Metaspeed models with 17, and the Adidas Adios Pro 4 took the win with 19. It is hard to fault the Adios Pro 4: versatile, durable and sensibly priced. If you want maximum softness, look at the Endorphin Elite 2; for exhilarating 5K to half marathon speed, the Metaspeed models; for glove-like fit and marathon smoothness, the Alphafly 3. Pick the shoe that matches your race distance and running style, and you will not go far wrong.
