Best Projectors for Most People: The $900 to $1,500 Sweet Spot

Eight projectors tested side by side to find the best value in the $900 to $1,500 range, covering brightness, contrast, gaming, and everyday usability.

Introduction

The $900 to $1,500 price range is currently the sweet spot for projectors. It offers surprisingly high performance and reliability that budget models cannot match, without the diminishing returns of high-end home theater products. This roundup covers eight projectors that fall into this range, divided into three form factor groups: compact bedside models, larger living room units with gimbal stands, and projectors best suited for ceiling or tripod mounting.

The Contenders at a Glance

The smaller projectors with built-in aiming solutions include the $899 JMGO N1S4K, a triple laser DLP projector with an advertised brightness of 3,000 lumens. The $949 Epson Life Studio Flex Plus uses a single laser 3LCD light source with 1,000 lumens of advertised brightness. The $1,291 Highense M2 Pro is also a triple laser DLP, but adds optical zoom and 200 extra lumens for an advertised brightness of 3,300 lumens.

The living room projectors are larger and much brighter. The $999 Dang Deox02 uses a dual laser light source with an advertised brightness of 2,000 lumens. The $1,399 XG Horizon 20 is a triple laser projector with the highest advertised brightness by a significant margin at 3,200 lumens, plus optical zoom and vertical and horizontal lens shift, features that are unusual at this price point.

The ceiling or tripod mount group includes the $999 BenQ GP520 with a 4LED light source producing 2,600 lumens of advertised brightness. The $1,450 Nexugo Tri Vision Ultra combines RGB lasers and RGB LEDs for 2,600 lumens. The most expensive unit here is the $1,499 Valyrian Stream Master Plus, a triple laser projector with an advertised brightness of 1,650 ISO lumens.

Brightness Testing: Claims vs. Reality

On paper, the XG Horizon 20 is the brightest, while the BenQ GP520 offers the highest lumens per dollar. However, testing with the ANSI lumen standard, which averages nine individual brightness readings and multiplies by screen size in square meters, tells a different story. The BenQ GP520 measured 600 lumens higher than advertised at 3,177 lumens, but only in a mode with a heavily green-shifted image and an average color delta error of 19.94, which is not realistic for everyday use.

Only the Epson achieved its maximum brightness of 999 lumens in a mode that was actually usable. Looking at usable brightness, defined as the brightest mode with a color error under 10 and fans at normal speeds, the Nexugo Tri Vision Ultra led at 2,380 lumens in vision bright mode, which uses a cooler color temperature. The XG Horizon 20 was just seven lumens behind at 2,373 ANSI lumens in movie mode with luminance boost on, offering a more traditional warmer color temperature and lower color error.

Contrast Measurements

Native contrast was measured by comparing a centerpoint brightness reading on an all-white screen with a moving 50% gray box against an all-black screen with the same box. The JMGO N1S4K had the highest native contrast at 1,767:1, followed closely by the much brighter Nexugo Tri Vision Ultra. The Highense M2 Pro measured 1,685:1 when placed as far from the screen as possible using optical zoom, but its minimum throw resulted in 18% less contrast. The XG Horizon 20 lost about 13% of its contrast going from maximum to minimum throw.

Dynamic contrast, which uses laser dimming during dark scenes to lower the black floor, was highest on the XG Horizon 20 at an impressive 15,248:1. The Valyrian Stream Master Plus came in second with about half that at 7,588:1. Dynamic contrast measurements should be taken with caution, as they do not always translate into better picture quality.

Side-by-Side Viewing Tests

To determine real-world picture quality, all eight projectors were compared head-to-head on two 100-inch screens in a light-controlled space. In the first round, the JMGO N1S4K faced the Epson Life Studio Flex Plus. Despite nearly identical measured brightness, the JMGO looked much brighter and more vibrant thanks to its triple laser light source. It also had significantly more depth and shadow detail, with about three times the contrast of the Epson. The Epson’s dynamic contrast system was mostly ineffective, leaving blacks muddy and dark gray rather than true black. This round was a clean sweep for the JMGO.

In round two, the JMGO faced the BenQ GP520. With nearly twice the brightness and better color accuracy, the BenQ looked excellent in bright scenes. However, in moderately lit and dark scenes, the BenQ fell apart, with washed-out images even with dynamic contrast enabled. The JMGO easily won this round despite some concerns about its color space.

Round three pitted the JMGO against the Dang Deox02. The Dang’s colors were not great, with skin tones looking pink and undersaturated. Its high black floor and low native contrast made images flat and uninteresting. In dark scenes, the Dang looked muddy and gray, losing significant shadow detail. Another clean sweep for the JMGO.

In round four, the Highense M2 Pro took on the JMGO. The Highense nailed color accuracy with more natural skin tones, and its extra 300 lumens gave highlights a little more punch. In dark scenes, the Highense’s dynamic laser dimming produced a lower black floor while keeping more shadow detail intact. The main reason the Highense won this round is that the JMGO uses its native color space instead of the correct color space for the content, and offers no options to correct it. The Highense easily took the round.

Round five matched the XG Horizon 20 against the Highense. The XG is more than twice as bright, and in bright scenes it was nearly perfect with vibrant, accurate colors and enough contrast for shadow detail. In moderately lit content, the XG’s higher black floor was offset by increased highlight brightness and overall interesting contrast. The XG’s dynamic contrast system still has issues, with its dynamic black level enhancement turning the entire image purple when lasers dim. However, without that setting, the black floor was tolerable. The XG won this round.

In round six, the XG faced the Nexugo Tri Vision Ultra. In bright scenes they were very close, but the Nexugo’s scene adaptive contrast created harsher shadows. In moderately lit scenes, the Nexugo raised gamma too much for a dark room. The XG’s interesting contrast seemed much higher with brighter highlights and darker shadows. The XG moved on again.

The final round matched the XG Horizon 20 against the Valyrian Stream Master Plus. Both looked great in bright scenes, but the XG’s extra brightness was more eye-catching. In moderately lit scenes, the XG’s 800 extra lumens made highlights pop for a more exciting image. However, in dark scenes, the Valyrian was substantially better, using its enhanced black level algorithm to lower the black floor significantly while maintaining color accuracy and highlight brightness. The XG took the round with wins in two of three categories, but the Valyrian’s dark scene performance was clearly superior.

The final rankings for viewing experience placed the XG Horizon 20 first, the Valyrian Stream Master Plus second, the Nexugo Tri Vision Ultra third, and the Highense M2 Pro fourth.

Gaming Performance and Input Lag

Input lag under 20 milliseconds is excellent for gaming, 20 to 50 milliseconds is fine for casual play, 50 to 100 milliseconds is usable but not great, and over 100 milliseconds should be avoided. At 4K 60Hz, all projectors except the Dang and Epson were under 20 milliseconds. The XG Horizon 20 was technically the lowest when measured from the middle of the screen, but it uses a new DLP controller that refreshes from the top down, so it could be as low as 2.7 milliseconds from the very top.

At higher refresh rates, the XG again came out on top, with the Valyrian, Highense, and Nexugo also performing very well. The BenQ, JMGO, Dang, and Epson all dropped frames and had unstable measurements above 60Hz. When using digital keystone at 4K 60Hz, the Epson surprisingly came out on top with just 20.7 milliseconds, the same as without keystone. All projectors stayed under 50 milliseconds with keystone, which is excellent considering keystone input lag was in the hundreds of milliseconds just two years ago.

Lens Quality and Installation Flexibility

All projectors except the XG Horizon 20 and Highense M2 Pro have fixed throw ratios, requiring between 104 and 110 inches from the front of the projector to the screen for a 100-inch diagonal image. The XG can be placed anywhere from 106 to 129 inches away, while the Highense can be much closer with a minimum throw of 90 inches and a maximum of 115 inches using its zoom.

The XG Horizon 20 also includes both horizontal and vertical motorized lens shift, which is unusual at this price point. This allows shifting the entire image left, right, up, or down without compromising image quality or needing digital keystone, making installation significantly easier. In all testing, the XG zoom and lens shift worked flawlessly.

Lens focus, clarity, and sharpness were graded on the middle and each corner of the screen. The only projector that was noticeably terrible even from a normal viewing distance was the Epson Life Studio Flex Plus, which looked slightly worse than 1080p despite its 4K Pro UHD claims. The JMGO also had poor rendering of letters in the test pattern, looking almost like digital keystone was active even though it was not. The Valyrian Stream Master Plus and Highense M2 Pro both scored 10 out of 10, while the Nexugo and XG were just slightly soft in their upper left corners.

Motion Handling and 3D Playback

24p cinematic motion was evaluated using horizontal and vertical panning scenes. The projectors that did the best job converting 24p to 60p without significant judder were the XG Horizon 20, Valyrian Stream Master Plus, and JMGO N1S4K. For true 24 frames per second playback at 4K, only the Valyrian and Nexugo can do that, while the XG can do it at 1080p with its projector superframe option. Of those three, the XG’s motion during 24p content was by far the most cinematic despite its lower resolution.

For 3D playback, there were no major standouts. The Highense had a bit more 3D effect but less eye comfort, while the BenQ GP520 was very comfortable but showed slightly less depth. The Nexugo and XG offered a nice middle ground between eye comfort and 3D effect.

All projectors except the Epson are single chip DLP projectors, meaning they are susceptible to the DLP rainbow effect. They all have standard color orders with either 12 or 16 color flashes per frame, with slightly less rainbow effect in the 16-flash models. If rainbow effect is a known sensitivity, the Epson is the only one that will not show it at all due to its different projection technology.

Fan Noise, Speakers, and Smart Features

Fan noise levels varied from quietest to loudest across the group. In terms of speaker quality, there was a massive difference in maximum volume. The JMGO and Dang were by far the quietest but still had decent frequency response. The Epson was fairly quiet with a very balanced sound profile. The BenQ, Valyrian, Nexugo, and XG all had plenty of volume to fill a room, with the XG also offering excellent bass response from its built-in speakers. The Highense was by far the loudest at 81.6 dB with excellent vocal clarity, but it lacked the low-end presence of the XG.

Most of the projectors use Google TV, which has excellent app compatibility. The Dang’s processor felt a little underpowered and sluggish inside the Google TV interface. The Highense M2 Pro uses Vida OS, which also has very good app compatibility and is responsive, though it may be less familiar than Google TV. The Nexugo Tri Vision Ultra does not include a built-in operating system at all, instead offering a slot for whatever streaming stick you prefer.

Buying Advice

The XG Horizon 20 is the highest value projector in this group. It had the highest usable brightness, finished first in side-by-side testing, has the lowest input lag, excellent 3D, excellent 24p motion handling, the best speakers, a built-in gimbal stand, and optical zoom with vertical and horizontal lens shift. It finished first by nine points over the Valyrian Stream Master Plus, even with a low score for dynamic contrast since its dynamic black level enhancement option is basically unusable at this point. A fix has been promised that could potentially make the Horizon 20 substantially better if it could utilize that 15,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio without color shifts or artifacts.

For a light-controlled theater room with a budget of $1,500 or less, the Valyrian Stream Master Plus delivers the best image in terms of contrast and black level. Its enhanced black level system is the best dynamic contrast system on the market by a significant margin. If you can position your projector properly without needing lens shift or zoom, and prefer extra contrast over extra brightness, the Valyrian is the clear choice.

For a bedroom projector on a nightstand projecting onto a wall or ceiling, the three contenders are the JMGO N1S4K, the Highense M2 Pro, and the Epson Life Studio Flex Plus. Of those three, the Highense was by far the best. The JMGO costs $400 less and has slightly smaller dimensions, but it lacks picture settings, speaker quality, and optical zoom compared to the Highense. Both are excellent options, especially compared to the Epson Life Studio Flex Plus, which is difficult to recommend.

Conclusion

The $900 to $1,500 range offers exceptional projector value. The XG Horizon 20 stands out as the overall winner with its combination of brightness, features, and performance. The Valyrian Stream Master Plus is the best choice for contrast-focused viewers in a controlled room. For bedside use, the Highense M2 Pro leads, with the JMGO N1S4K as a strong budget alternative. The Epson Life Studio Flex Plus is the one model most buyers should skip.
