Best 4K Projectors 2026: Six Standard Throw Models Compared

Six highly anticipated standard throw 4K projectors compared across brightness, contrast, color accuracy, gaming performance, and value.

Introduction

Projector review season is officially here, and this year brings six highly anticipated standard throw 4K projectors from XGIMI, Nebula, Valerion, BenQ, and Dangbei. To give these new models proper context, they are compared against the lower price point winner from 2024, the Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra, and the landslide overall winner from last year, the Valerion Pro 2.

Each projector was measured for brightness, contrast, and color accuracy, then put head-to-head on 100-inch screens to judge picture quality. Beyond that, input lag, focus, 3D performance, laser speckle, DLP rainbow effect, fan noise, and much more were tested. All measurements come from independent testing rather than manufacturer claims.

How We Tested These Projectors

The testing process started with verifying brightness claims. The XGIMI Horizon 20 Max came in at over 95% of its advertised 5700 lumens, hitting an impressive 5,423 lumens on high power mode. However, that mode required fans at maximum speed and produced extremely inaccurate colors with an average delta error of 21.92 in Calman Ultimate.

For usable brightness, which requires no fan noise compromises and a delta error under 10, the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max still came out on top at 3,730 lumens at minimum throw in movie mode with a 6.64 delta error. The Valerion Max was already usable at its maximum of 2,938 lumens with an 8.16 delta error. The Tri Vision Ultra hit 2,380 lumens in vision bright mode with a delta error of 8.59. The Dangbei Debox O2 Pro was the dimmest at 1,290 lumens with a delta error of 6.77.

Contrast ratios are tricky because projectors with optical zoom are almost always brightest at minimum throw distance but have more contrast at maximum throw. Going from minimum to maximum throw, the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max lost 6.5% brightness but gained 18.5% native contrast, jumping from 1,376:1 to 1,631:1. The Valerion Pro 2 lost 7.5% brightness to gain 42% native contrast, reaching 1,663:1. The Valerion Max lost about 7% brightness and gained 56% native contrast, reaching 2,346:1. The Nebula X1 lost just 5.5% brightness to gain 55% native contrast, bringing it to 2,175:1.

Brightness and Contrast Testing

A motorized iris is a feature that recently started appearing on 4K lifestyle projectors. It works like a camera iris, reducing the amount of light that passes through by lowering the aperture size. Smaller apertures produce higher contrast and sharper focus but at the expense of overall brightness. In this group, the Valerion Max and Nebula X1 both have manual motorized irises, allowing users to select an iris level that gets the ideal trade-off between contrast and brightness for their space.

Dynamic contrast is another major factor. All projectors can dynamically control the brightness of their laser or LED light source to dim it in scenarios where full brightness is not needed, which also reduces the black floor. However, not all dimming algorithms are created equal. The effectiveness depends on factors like light source type, processing power, and the programming of the dynamic contrast algorithm. The only real way to know how effective they are is to put them side by side watching actual content.

In the first side-by-side round, the Dangbei Debox O2 Pro and BenQ GP520 were compared on two 100-inch screens in a light-controlled room. In SDR content, both looked a little washed out due to lower than average contrast ratios. The Dangbei was shifted more toward red than the BenQ. In dark content, the BenQ’s dynamic contrast algorithm produced a decent performance in the darkest SDR scenes, but the Debox O2 Pro had an extremely high black floor and crushed shadow details, making dark scenes nearly unwatchable. In HDR content, neither projector performed well. The high black floor on the Dangbei made dark areas look muddy and gray, while the lack of HDR10 dynamic tone mapping on the BenQ led to an overly dim image with lost shadow detail. The BenQ GP520 won this round, but neither projector was particularly impressive.

In round two, the Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra went up against the BenQ GP520. The Nexigo is about 25% brighter and has more native contrast than the BenQ has dynamic. In bright SDR scenes, the Nexigo was much more vibrant with more depth due to its higher contrast ratio. However, the delta error of 6.85 was visible, with the Nexigo noticeably more blue than the BenQ. In dark scenes, the Tri Vision Ultra kept its light source at 100% brightness and relied on its native 1,744:1 contrast ratio, leading to bright highlights but a raised black floor. The BenQ dynamically lowered its brightness, producing a low black floor but muted highlights. The Nexigo showed significantly more shadow detail and was the clear winner in this round. In HDR content, the Nexigo has the advantage of Dolby Vision support, while the BenQ uses standard HDR10. The BenQ was far too dim in HDR to produce a vibrant image on a 100-inch screen.

Picture Quality Showdown

Round three paired the Tri Vision Ultra against the Dangbei MP1 Max. On the surface, these are evenly matched projectors with hybrid light sources at around 1,950 accurate ANSI lumens and color delta errors around 6.5. However, the Nexigo has more than double the native contrast and support for Dolby Vision. In bright SDR content, the MP1 looked a little too green in person, though this was not visible on camera. In dark scenes, the lower contrast of the MP1 Max was problematic, with muddy and washed-out images and missing shadow detail compared to the Nexigo. In HDR content, the Dangbei had plenty of brightness, but the tone mapping was substantially better in the Dolby Vision implementation on the Nexigo. The Dangbei also appeared to use the SDR Rec 709 color space for HDR content instead of the P3 HDR color space, causing colors to be extremely undersaturated. The Nexigo won this round.

Round four put the Tri Vision Ultra against the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max. The XGIMI’s nearly 3,000 ANSI lumens in a color accurate movie mode was impressive, and in bright SDR content, it looked more like a TV than a projector on a 100-inch screen. The XGIMI’s dynamic black level enhancement was working, dimming the lasers to lower the black floor, but the resulting color balance was off, with everything turning dark blue when the dynamic mode kicked in. Unfortunately, dynamic black level enhancement is completely disabled in Dolby Vision modes, and since the majority of streaming content comes in Dolby Vision, one of the most important features of the Horizon 20 Max is unavailable most of the time. MEMC was also permanently disabled in Dolby Vision, and audio was permanently enabled and set to medium in SDR mode. This was a pre-production unit with pre-production firmware, but there were too many bugs related to picture quality and picture settings to move it on to the next round.

Round five featured the Tri Vision Ultra against the Nebula X1. The Nebula is on paper the best projector in this group with nearly 6,000:1 native contrast and 47,000:1 dynamic contrast. With the X1’s iris set to medium, it produced around 1,700 lumens with double the native contrast of the Nexigo. In bright SDR content, the Nebula had excellent depth in shadowy areas thanks to its high native contrast. However, the dynamic contrast algorithm, set to level one out of three, leaves a lot to be desired. Unlike systems that can maintain bright highlights while decreasing the black floor, the Nebula seems to dim the whole image, resulting in dimmer highlights. In Dolby Vision content, the Nebula appeared to have less color saturation, with bright colors muted compared to the vibrant image on the Nexigo. Despite extensive experimentation with gamma settings, Dolby Vision screen size, dynamic contrast levels, and iris positions, the Nebula only had a slight edge over the Nexigo in about 5% of tested scenes. The other 95% of the time, the picture on the Nexigo was preferred. However, the Nebula X1 was provisionally moved on to the next round.

Round six was the Valerion Pro 2 against the Nebula X1. In bright SDR content, the Valerion delivered bright highlights, excellent color accuracy, and tons of shadow detail. The Nebula looked slightly oversaturated, making skin tones look a little strange. In darker content, the Valerion’s dynamic laser dimming algorithm showed why it is the best on the market. Shadows and even black bars on the Nebula were brighter than on the Valerion, even though the Valerion maintained brighter highlights in the background. Throughout all content, the Valerion Pro 2 outperformed the Nebula X1 in image processing, tone mapping, color accuracy, and shadow detail. The Valerion Pro 2 was the clear winner.

The final round was Valerion versus Valerion, with the Pro 2 against the new Valerion Max. The Valerion Max was set on Iris level 3, giving it slightly higher brightness than the Pro 2 at 1,950 lumens and about double the native contrast at 3,371:1. Both were set to their highest enhanced black level setting. The significantly higher native contrast on the Valerion Max was easily visible in every scene, with a lower black floor, better shadow detail, and more perceived clarity in shadowy areas. The slightly more saturated picture on the Max made everything look a little more interesting without making skin tones look strange. The Max did have lower color accuracy than the Pro 2, with a delta error of 4.42 compared to 2.66. For the most part, the Max was just ever so slightly better than the Pro 2 in every single scene. However, the Pro 2 is nearly as good for significantly less money, which may prevent most people from buying the Max.

Color Accuracy and Light Sources

All the triple laser projectors looked green in person, but when measured with a high-resolution spectral radiometer, they appeared to be very accurate with no green bias at all. This comes down to the spectral distribution of a pure white signal on each projector.

The BenQ GP520 is the only one using an LED light source, specifically BenQ’s four LED light engine. The Dangbei Debox O2 Pro uses a dual laser setup with a blue and red laser, plus a phosphor wheel that produces greens and a wider range of reds. The Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra has an ALPD 5.0 hybrid light source that uses separate lasers for red, green, and blue, but also uses red, green, and blue LEDs that give a much wider spectral distribution. The Dangbei MP1 Max is also supposed to be a hybrid light source, but compared with the Nexigo, there is just a little tiny bump around the green wavelengths, making it still mostly a triple laser projector rather than a true hybrid. The XGIMI Horizon 20 Max, Nebula X1, Valerion Pro 2, and Valerion Max are all pure triple laser projectors with narrow, steep peaks, especially for the red laser, resulting in an extremely wide color space coverage and vibrant, super saturated colors.

The point is that triple laser projectors produce a dazzling image that really has to be experienced to understand, but colors may look slightly different to different people based on individual differences in eyes. Hybrid light sources and LED light sources will tend to look more similar to more people regardless of any differences in physiology.

Color space handling is also important. The Debox O2 Pro’s blue primary was way outside of the SDR color space. The Dangbei MP1 Max in movie mode is limited to P3 color space even when content calls for BT2020. The Nebula X1 overshoots the color space on all HDR content and defaults to the largest BT2020 color space when in auto or on, though it does use the correct color when displaying Dolby Vision. The BenQ GP520, Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra, XGIMI Horizon 20 Max, and both Valerion projectors correctly limit and display the correct colors based on what the content is mastered in.

Gaming Performance and Input Lag

Input lag is important for gaming. Values under 20 milliseconds are great for all games. Between 20 and 50 milliseconds is okay for casual gaming. From 50 to 100 milliseconds will start to feel a little strange, and above 100 milliseconds is generally not acceptable for gaming.

At 4K 60, which is what most people will game at, all projectors except for the Dangbei MP1 Max and Dangbei Debox O2 Pro were under the 20 millisecond mark. The Valerions and Nexigo were locked at 17.6 milliseconds. The BenQ GP520 was just slightly more than that, and the Nebula and XGIMI measured 18.3 milliseconds.

Thanks to the newest DLP controller from Texas Instruments, the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max is the first projector on the market that refreshes its screen from top to bottom instead of all at once. This means input lag at the top of the screen can be as low as 2 milliseconds, even at 4K 60. It is also the first DLP projector to fully support variable refresh rate (VRR).

At 1080p 120 Hz, only the XGIMI, Valerion, and Nexigo projectors improved their input lag. The rest had unstable measurements, suggesting they are dropping frames and not outputting the full 120 frames per second. The same was true at 1080p 240 Hz, where the XGIMI, Valerion, and Nexigo projectors all improved again. At 240 Hz, input lag numbers under 1 millisecond were measured for the first time ever on a projector at the very top of the screen on the XGIMI. Unlike an LCD screen, DLP mirrors have an instant refresh rate, so there is virtually zero motion blur at 240 Hz, making the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max not only the best projector on the market for gaming, but also one of the best gaming displays, period.

Lens Quality and Placement Flexibility

The Valerion Max and XGIMI Horizon 20 Max are in a league of their own with image positioning. The Nexigo, BenQ, and the two Dangbei projectors all have a fixed throw distance, so they need to be mounted at the exact right distance for the screen. If not, digital zoom is required. The XGIMI, Nebula, and both Valerion projectors have optical zoom, giving flexibility in placement distance. The Valerion Max and XGIMI Horizon 20 Max both include vertical lens shift, which can move the projected image up and down without image degradation or increased input lag from keystoning. The XGIMI also has horizontal lens shift.

Lens quality testing covered the screen door effect, chromatic aberration, and focus uniformity. The XGIMI Horizon 20 Max had the best overall focus with zero chromatic aberration, low screen door effect, and very good overall focus. The Valerion Max came in second with a small amount of red fringing and slightly more screen door effect than the XGIMI, but sharper overall focus. The Pro 2 had slightly more fringing but less screen door effect. The Nebula X1 had very crisp focus but lots of screen door effect and more noticeable red fringing. The Dangbei MP1 had red, yellow, and teal color fringing and a noticeable pixel grid. The Dangbei Debox O2 Pro’s fringing was green and blue, and focus was a little soft overall. The Nexigo had red fringing and overall soft focus while still having visible screen door effect. The worst focus was from the BenQ, which was blurry with green and red fringing.

Light leakage testing revealed that the Dangbei Debox O2 Pro had the most pronounced light leakage, followed by the Nebula X1, then the Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra, the Valerion Pro 2, then the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max. The Dangbei MP1 and BenQ had very close to zero light leakage.

The Valerion Max has the ability to use add-on lenses. A long throw lens will be available starting in quarter 1, 2026, increasing the throw ratio from the stock 0.9 to 1.5:1 up to a max of 2.0:1, allowing the projector to be placed further back in a long dedicated theater room.

24p, 3D, and Other Considerations

For movie buffs, 24p motion handling matters. All projectors display 24p content at 60 Hz with 3:2 pull down by default, which causes motion judder. The Valerion projectors can be set to their MEMC film setting, which accurately displays 24p motion. The Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra can toggle 24p mode, which also passes the 24p motion test.

For 3D enthusiasts, DLP projectors are basically the last fully supported way to consume 3D content on a big screen. The top 3D performers were the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max and the Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra. The Nexigo had a slightly better menu for accessing 3D settings and supports frame sequential 3D as well as frame packing side by side and top and bottom. The Nebula X1, Valerion Max, and Valerion Pro 2 all had good 3D effect and compatibility but less eye comfort. The Dangbei MP1 was the least comfortable and made viewers feel a little crosseyed after just a few minutes.

The DLP rainbow effect (RBE) was measured using a high-speed camera recording at 40,000 frames per second. The Valerion Max with its RBE reduction feature does 56 color changes per frame on Worm 2 and 48 on Worm 1. The lowest number of cycles per frame was 12, which is what used to be called a standard 4x color wheel. That 4x mode is the mode where the most rainbow effect can be expected.

Laser speckle was judged on a speckle-prone screen. Fan noise levels on highest laser power were measured from loudest to quietest. Speaker quality was tested with a frequency response sweep, with the Nebula X1 coming out on top with its optional wireless speaker accessory.

The built-in operating system was also evaluated. The Nebula X1 and Dangbei Debox O2 Pro processors seem way too underpowered to handle Google TV, and both were unacceptably laggy. The Dangbei MP1 and BenQ GP520 were slightly better but still a little laggy. The Valerion Pro 2, Valerion Max, and XGIMI Horizon 20 were all very snappy and responsive. The Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra doesn’t include a built-in operating system at all, instead featuring a slot under the projector to install a Fire TV stick, which is arguably the best solution.

Form factor and remotes were also considered. The XGIMI Horizon 20 Max, Dangbei MP1 Max, and Dangbei Debox O2 Pro all have built-in gimbal stands, great for moving a projector around and setting it up in temporary spaces. The Nebula X1 has a motorized gimbal lens that can tilt up, which has the advantage of not moving if bumped, but it is harder to adjust since it needs to be done with the remote, and it can’t tilt down like a standard gimbal. The BenQ, Valerion Pro 2, and Max all have optional gimbal stands with a single mounting screw. The Tri Vision Ultra can use a center quarter-20 tripod mount or a balanced four-point standard ceiling mount. With the exception of the Valerion projectors, the power bricks for these projectors are absolutely massive, with the XGIMI, Nexigo, and BenQ in a tie for the largest, while the Valerion’s GaN power supply is tiny in comparison.

Overall Buying Advice

For a dedicated home theater, the Valerion Max is the top pick. It takes the solid baseline performance of the Pro 2 and adds an iris for increased contrast, vertical lens shift for placement flexibility, and an RBE reduction feature that more than triples the color cycles per frame. The Max also adds another layer of flexibility with its external lens mounting system. If the Max is in budget and the flexibility is needed, it is basically a no-brainer.

However, the Max’s biggest competitor is the Pro 2, which still performs exceptionally but for a lot less money based on current sale prices. If vertical lens shift or an external lens is not needed, it is hard to justify the significant price increase for the Valerion Max. The Pro 2 is the right projector for most home theaters based on value alone.

For more casual setups, table or shelf placement, gaming with fast camera movements, or 3D performance, the XGIMI Horizon 20 Max is incredibly good. Even though it couldn’t touch its 5,700 lumen claim in any usable mode, it still had over 3,000 ANSI lumens with acceptable color accuracy. If XGIMI can fix their dynamic black level setting, the Horizon 20 Max is going to be a serious competitor for the Valerion Pro 2, even in theater environments.

For budget-conscious buyers, the Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra is currently priced under $1,300 and is hands down the highest value projector on the market. It finished third in the side-by-side testing with low input lag, 24p support, great 3D performance, dynamic tone mapping, Dolby Vision, and HDR10 support. It also just got a firmware update to add laser brightness controls and full fade to black.

Unfortunately for the Dangbei MP1 Max, Debox O2 Pro, and BenQ GP520, the existence of the Tri Vision Ultra makes it really hard to recommend anything else in that $1,500 and under price range. Unless a built-in gimbal and Google TV are on the must-have list, in which case the Dangbei MP1 is the way to go.

Conclusion

This year’s standard throw 4K projector lineup shows clear progress in brightness, contrast, and gaming performance. The Valerion Max takes the top spot with its combination of high native contrast, flexible placement options, and effective RBE reduction. The Valerion Pro 2 remains an exceptional value for most home theaters. The XGIMI Horizon 20 Max is a gaming powerhouse with groundbreaking input lag performance, though its software needs refinement. The Nexigo Tri Vision Ultra continues to be the best value pick under $1,300. For the remaining projectors, the Tri Vision Ultra’s existence makes them hard to recommend unless specific features like built-in gimbals or Google TV are essential.
