The Shoes Behind the Most Personal Bests: 5K to Marathon Results

Ten racing shoes ranked by how often they appear behind personal bests at 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon distance.

Introduction

Which racing shoes actually help people run faster? A community poll of 297 personal bests, sorted by race distance, gives a surprisingly clear answer. Runners recorded which shoe they wore when they set a PR at 5K, 10K, half marathon, or full marathon, and the same few names keep coming up: Nike’s Vaporfly and Alphafly lines, a pair of Saucony Endorphins, and a couple of Adidas Adizero racers.

The overall pattern is striking. The original Alphafly Next% 1 and both versions of the Vaporfly Next% together account for 40.6 percent of all personal bests recorded across every distance. Whatever you think of super shoes, that is a serious body of evidence.

How the Results Were Collected

A total of 297 personal bests were logged, broken down as 88 at 5K, 81 at 10K, 84 at half marathon, and 44 at marathon. Shorter distances dominate simply because people race them more often, and only about 14.8 percent of all recorded PRs came from the marathon.

Only results that could be tied to a specific shoe made the cut, which keeps the data rough but honest. As with any self-reported poll, selection effects are possible, but the concentration around a handful of models is hard to ignore.

The 5K Record Setters

Five shoes separate themselves at the 5K distance, and one of them towers over the rest. The Nike Vaporfly Next% 2 took 19.3 percent of all 5K personal bests, nearly double the share of the next contender. It is light enough for short blasts and seems to be the shoe of choice for viewers chasing a fast 3.1 miler, and it is a record-breaking option across every distance in this dataset.

Adidas Adizero Takumi Sen 8

In second place with 10.2 percent of 5K records, the Takumi Sen 8 is a genuine short-distance specialist. It offers excellent cushioning and superb grip over shorter races, and it is often heavily discounted, which makes it even more attractive if a faster 10K is also on your list.

Nike Alphafly Next% 1

Third goes to the Alphafly Next% 1 with 9.1 percent, remarkable for a shoe billed as a marathon racer. Many runners prefer the original version’s 4mm drop to the revised 8mm drop in newer iterations, and plenty of people apparently use it for anything up to an eighth of a marathon.

Nike Vaporfly Next% 1

Fourth place goes to the original Vaporfly Next% 1 at roughly eight percent of 5K PRs. Some runners still favor the first version purely for its lighter, bag-like upper, and it remains a workable option at practically any distance.

Saucony Endorphin Speed 1

Rounding out the 5K top five is the Endorphin Speed 1 with 4.6 percent, a long-running favorite. It is light enough for the 3.1 mile distance yet durable enough for training, which explains why it has quietly collected a steady stream of short-distance PRs.

The 10K Record Setters

At 10K, the same Nike racer leads again, but only just. The Vaporfly Next% 2 took 17.3 percent of 10K personal bests, with the Alphafly Next% 1 close behind at 12.3 percent. Between them, those two Nike shoes account for 29.6 percent of all 10K results in the poll, a startling statistic in favor of ZoomX midsoles.

Third place belongs to the Takumi Sen 8 with 8.6 percent, further proof that it is more than a pure 5K tool. In joint fourth, two 2020-era shoes are still doing damage: the Vaporfly Next% 1 and the Endorphin Speed 1, each at 6.2 percent. It is telling that over half of all 10K PRs, 51 percent, came from just five shoe models.

The Half Marathon Leaders

The top five half marathon shoes account for a massive 58.3 percent of all PRs at that distance, and the picture shifts toward maximum cushioning. The Alphafly Next% 1 takes top spot with 20.4 percent, and combined with the Vaporfly Next% 2 at 17.9 percent, the two Nike models produced 38.1 percent of half marathon records. As the miles increase, the extra foam clearly becomes more desirable.

Saucony Endorphin Speed 2

Third place brings a different brand into the mix. The Endorphin Speed 2 claimed 9.5 percent of half marathon PRs, a conservative update that kept the magic of the original model intact, and it features heavily across the poll results.

Adidas Adios Pro 2

In fifth place is the Adios Pro 2 at 4.8 percent, just edged out by the original Vaporfly in fourth at 6 percent. The Adios Pro 2 is now heavily discounted yet remains a worthy half marathon option for runners who want proven pro-level performance at a friendlier price.

The Marathon Record Setters

Marathon numbers are smaller but no less lopsided. The Alphafly Next% 1 leads with 24.4 percent of marathon PRs, one of the highest-stacked shoes available, and its huge heel foam may explain why it dominates as the distance grows. In second place is the Vaporfly Next% 2 with nine records, exactly 20 percent, meaning the two Vaporfly models plus the Alphafly account for a combined 51.1 percent of all marathon personal bests in the poll.

Third place is the original Vaporfly Next% 1 at 6.6 percent, with some runners insisting the first version is still the greater of the two, possibly down to a different midsole feel. Fourth goes to the Asics Metaspeed Sky, a lower-profile option that Asics has continued to tinker with.

In joint fifth, the Adios Pro 3 and the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 share about 4.4 percent each. Both are newer pro-level racers that have been on the market for less time, which may partly explain their quieter showing.

Buying Advice: Matching the Shoe to Your Distance

If your goal is a fast 5K or 10K, the data points firmly toward the Vaporfly Next% 2, with the Takumi Sen 8 as a grippier, often cheaper alternative that also scores well at 10K. Runners who like a lighter, more traditional upper may still prefer the original Vaporfly Next% 1.

For half marathon and marathon ambitions, the Alphafly Next% 1 is the standout performer, its extra cushioning and stack height paying dividends as the miles pile up. Saucony’s Endorphin Speed models remain the value pick for runners who want PR potential without paying premium racer prices, and the Adios Pro 2 at a heavy discount is a sensible half marathon bet.

One honest caveat: shoes do not run the race for you. The runners behind these numbers put in the training, and plenty of them might have PR’d in anything. But if 51.1 percent of marathon PRs came from three shoes, it is fair to say the Vaporfly and Alphafly family has earned its reputation.

Conclusion

The message from these results is consistent: for short races, the Vaporfly Next% 2 and Takumi Sen 8 lead the way; for longer efforts, the Alphafly Next% 1 takes over. The Endorphin Speed line offers a compelling middle path, while the Adios Pro and newer pro racers remain worthwhile options that are increasingly affordable as they get discounted. Match the shoe to your target distance, and you will be lining up in exactly the footwear that has helped the most runners set their bests.
