Best Marathon Racing Shoes 2024: Six Carbon-Plated Racers Worth a Look

From the Hoka Cielo X1 to the Puma Nitro Elite 3, six carbon-plated marathon racers that stood out over a full year of hard training and racing.

Introduction

Picking a marathon racing shoe in 2024 was genuinely difficult. Carbon-plated racers matured fast, and the shoes that stood out over a full year of hard workouts and long runs shared a few clear traits: huge amounts of forefoot foam, supercritical midsole compounds, and plates tuned to help that foam bounce back. Here are six that earned their place, ranked from a strong fifth place up to the top pick of the year.

5. Hoka Cielo X1

The Cielo X1 was easy to overlook because it runs a little big and a little heavy, but the details underneath are what matter. Hoka built it on a PEBA-based midsole foam, loaded a gigantic amount of foam into the forefoot, and added a lateral side cutout that makes it easier to bend the carbon fiber plate.

The result is a really fun, springy ride whenever you land on the forefoot, crush that foam, and let the plate snap it back. It shines on long runs with marathon-effort miles, threshold repeats, and anything a bit faster. The weight is the main issue, and a more dynamic foam compress-and-decompress would push it higher, but it is a solid fifth-place finisher.

4. Puma Fast-R 2

The Fast-R 2 continues the theme of a large forefoot foam stack, and this year Puma switched it to an aliphatic TPU foam. That change brings a great amount of cushion and compression, then a really lively snap back, plus durability in two senses. It holds up over many miles, and it stays snappy deep into a single long run, feeling just as lively at the end of a race as at the start.

The exposed carbon fiber plate is another standout, and it makes bouncing off the front end of the shoe genuinely enjoyable. With well over 100 miles logged and the foam still feeling fresh, the only real knock is the weight. Shed some grams and this would place much higher.

3. Nike Alphafly 3

The Alphafly 3 made headlines all year. It now carries both the men’s and women’s world marathon records, and it has proven itself for elites and non-elites alike. The ZoomX foam here feels closer to older original ZoomX, which is likely part of why the shoe ends up so light.

Two things hold it back slightly. The air pods moved a bit more toward the center of the foot, and on some foot strikes it can feel like you land over or past them instead of stomping on them. The way the carbon plate and air pods interact can also feel slightly rickety at times, a little like running across a plywood floor. None of that stops it from being fast and fun, but it does not feel quite as smooth as some rivals.

2. ASICS Metaspeed Sky Paris

The Metaspeed Sky has been a fixture on year-end lists since it first launched, and the Paris version makes a key change: the foam moves from FF Turbo to FF Turbo Plus, going from a nylon-based compound to a PEBA-based one. That makes the foam noticeably softer, so landing on the forefoot compresses a lot of it and returns it in a pleasant, comfortable way.

It leans a touch mushy compared to the quicker, springier bounce of last year’s model, and a bit more energy on decompression would be welcome. Even so, this was the single most-run shoe of the year, reached for again and again on the toughest workouts. The plate position, the foam, and a weight that makes it one of the lightest shoes on the market all add up.

1. Puma Nitro Elite 3

Puma had a fantastic year, and the Nitro Elite 3 tops it off. It uses the same aliphatic TPU foam loved in the Fast-R 2, but in a much lighter package, paired with a minimal racing upper that is genuinely comfortable. Like the Metaspeed Sky Paris, it is a shoe you can reach for on the biggest, most intimidating workouts and still hit the paces.

The geometry is very different from the Metaspeed, seemingly built for runners with a quick turnover, yet it still works in a pleasant, powerful way even for runners who do not describe themselves that way. That versatility, combined with the low weight and sheer fun factor, makes it a shoe that should work for a wide range of runners, and it earns the top spot of 2024.

Honorable Mention: Adidas Adios Pro 4

The Adios Pro 4 earned its spot on merit. It was raced at the Berlin Marathon earlier in the year and delivered a strong experience. The reason it is not ranked in the 2024 list is timing: the shoe does not see its global release until 2025, so it is classified as a 2025 model. Where it lands in next year’s rankings remains to be seen.

Buying Advice

Choosing between these comes down to priorities. If lightweight and versatility matter most, the Nitro Elite 3 is the standout. If you want a proven record-setting platform and can live with a slightly less smooth ride, the Alphafly 3 is compelling. For soft comfort in a very light package, the Metaspeed Sky Paris is hard to beat, and the Fast-R 2 rewards runners who want durable, lively cushioning. The Cielo X1 suits those who prioritize forefoot bounce over outright weight.

Conclusion

2024 was a strong year for marathon racing shoes, with supercritical foams and plate design pushing every model forward. The Puma Nitro Elite 3 earns the top spot for its light weight and broad appeal, but each shoe here fits a slightly different runner. Match the ride character to your foot strike and race goals, and any of these six can carry you to the finish line.
