Benu Phoenix Rising Review: A Hand-Painted Limited Edition Fountain Pen
A hand-painted, faceted acrylic limited edition from Benu, available exclusively through Goldspot. Beautiful to hold, smooth to write, and built around the idea of renewal.
Introduction
Some pens are bought to be used every day, and some are bought because they stop you in your tracks. The Benu Phoenix Rising sits firmly in the second category. It is a limited edition, hand-painted fountain pen available exclusively through Goldspot, with only 125 pieces produced. The example examined here is number 12 of 125.
The Benu Story
Benu was founded in 2016 in Russia by Kate Dmitrieva and Alex Semanin with a clear ambition: make fountain pens that are works of art, wholly original in design, while keeping them affordable and accessible. They build their pens from layered acrylics with embedded glitter, flakes, and reflective materials, in shapes and geometries that challenge expectations of what a fountain pen should look like.
Nearly everything is made in house; the one exception is the nibs, which are Schmidt. The company is named after Benu, the ancient Egyptian god associated with the sun, creation, and rebirth, an archetype of the Phoenix itself. That theme became literal in 2022: following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Benu relocated its production from Russia to Armenia, where its pens, including the hand-painted models, are made today.
First Impressions: Design and the Phoenix Theme
Out of the box, the first thing you notice is how polished and glossy the acrylic is. The barrel is faceted, and each edge glistens as it catches the light. Shining flakes of color and glitter are visible at every level of the material, and the black background makes those flecks read like embers rising from darkness.

Painted on the barrel in fine brushwork across multiple colors is the firebird itself: a Phoenix with wings spread, surrounded by flame. The execution is vivid and detailed, and because each pen is hand painted, no two are exactly alike. As a daily visual reminder to aim for a better version of yourself, it is hard to beat. Just note that any stray ink drop inside the cap will spread across the finish until you clean it thoroughly.
Writing Performance
The Phoenix Rising is a cartridge-converter pen, which is practical: if the converter ever misbehaves, you simply swap it. The review unit was filled with a dark teal ink that balanced the fiery decoration nicely.

On paper, it writes exactly as a number six Schmidt nib should. Schmidt nibs are lush and free-flowing, and this one delivers an absolutely flawless line that keeps up with bold handwriting without effort. The experience is smooth and precise, with very little feedback or scribing noise. It is a somewhat predictable writing experience, but a genuinely good one.
Size, Weight, and Comfort
Closed, the pen measures about 150 mm. Unposted, it is 140 mm, which is long enough that posting is unnecessary. Posting is also not recommended, as the cap edge could mar the hand-painted detail.

Capped, it weighs only 26 g, and the grip section is around 10 to 11 mm, both ideal figures for comfortable long writing sessions. The facets reflect the light beautifully without biting into your fingers, and the pen is well balanced in the hand.
Value and Availability
At $280 for a steel Schmidt nib, the price would look steep if you judged the pen purely on its components. But that is not what you are buying here. You are buying hand decoration, a distinctive acrylic, and the symbolism of the Phoenix and renewal, in a run of only 125 pieces available from a single retailer.

The packaging itself is handsome all-paper presentation, making it a strong gift option. If the decoration resonates with you and the idea of owning one of these hauntingly memorable pens stays with you after you scroll away, the value is there. If you judge pens strictly by their parts, this one will be hard to justify.
Conclusion
The Benu Phoenix Rising is first and foremost a collectible: a strikingly beautiful, hand-painted object that happens to also be a smooth, comfortable, reliable writer. It is unlikely to become a daily writer, and it does not need to be. For collectors and anyone drawn to the symbolism of renewal, it is a memorable piece, and with only 125 available, it will not be around long.
