Bennu Brown Orchid Review: A Fountain Pen With Fairy-Tale Flair

A resin fountain pen with swirling amber, purple, and copper depth, a hand-assembled Schmidt nib, and a design unlike anything else on the market.

Introduction

Some pens are made to disappear into a shirt pocket. The Bennu Brown Orchid is not one of them. It is a bold, colorful, deliberately flamboyant fountain pen from a brand that treats pen design as a form of expression, and it makes a strong case for keeping one pen purely for the joy of writing at home.

The Story Behind Bennu

Bennu was founded by Alex Semenin and Kate Dmitrieva to express their passion for design. The name comes from the ancient Egyptian deity associated with the sun, creation, and rebirth, a god represented as a bird, which is fitting since pens were once made from bird quills. The company launched its first collection in October 2016 and has since built a reputation in the pen community for dazzling designs, recently relocating from Russia to Armenia.

The Brown Orchid is one of five designs in the Ambrosia collection, and it may be the most representative of the brand’s boldness. Framed against the mythology of fairies and inspiration, the pen is presented as something inspirational itself, a tool for moments of high emotion and creativity.

Design and Build Quality

The resin is where this pen earns its reputation. It is a floating swirl of wizard purple, shards of glimmering copper, shimmering gold, and specks of green that reflect like fish scales. There is a Gustav Klimt-like quality to it, a kind of alchemy in resin, and the effect changes constantly as light moves across it.

The material itself is high-quality resin that is molded, lathe-turned, and ground. Each pen is hand inspected and hand polished, and that attention to detail shows in the finish.

The overall shape is distinctive: plump in the center and tapering precipitously toward either end. Around the embellished center it measures roughly 17 millimeters, which some writers may find a touch too wide. Still, the thickness does not hurt balance or comfort. The cap carries an elaborate ring of translucent orchid flowers in deep amber, a stunning design statement that also keeps the pen from rolling away.

The cap is screw-on and twists on and off easily. It does post, but posting can be fussy, and when posted it sometimes feels a bit rickety in the hand. That is the pen’s biggest practical criticism, alongside its lack of a clip.

Practical Considerations

This is a thick pen, and thickness has consequences. It fits large pockets but not slim ones, it does not fit standard elastic pen cases or most designated pen slots in bags, and it lacks a clip for easy carrying. The safest approach is to keep the box it came with for storage and transport, because a pen like this deserves protection from scratches.

Ink capacity offers some flexibility. The pen ships with a short standard international cartridge and cannot take a full-size standard converter. A mini converter such as a small squeeze converter works well, the included cartridge can be refilled with an ink syringe, and the pen can also be converted to an eyedropper filler for those comfortable with the risk.

Nib and Writing Performance

The nibs are hand assembled by Schmidt in St Georgen, Germany, in a size 5 stainless steel, available in extra fine, fine, medium, or broad. They write magnificently, with a touch of softness and a hint of line variation in how they are cut that recalls vintage medium nibs.

Writing with this pen is an absolute joy. The size and scale feel elegant in the hand, and the nib pairing turns everyday notes into something more deliberate.

Who Should Buy the Bennu Brown Orchid

This is not a pen for the office. It is a pen for journaling, personal correspondence, and writing at home, perhaps a letter you will seal with wax. Its psychedelic swirl and grandiosity push thoughts toward the magical and the poetic, which is exactly the point.

At 132 US dollars, you are buying a unique experience. There is nothing else like this on the market, and reassurance comes in the form of an unlimited warranty against materials and workmanship, which says a great deal about how much the brand wants you to be happy with your purchase.

Conclusion

The Bennu Brown Orchid is an oddly compelling pen: imperfect in a few small, practical ways, but genuinely seductive in design, nib quality, and character. If you want a writer’s talisman for creative writing at home rather than a corporate carry pen, it is one of the most distinctive options available.
