ASICS Special Edition Running Shoes for Eugene and the World Championships: Six Pairs to Know

From the Metaspeed Edge+ racer to a velociraptor-inspired cross country spike, a closer look at six ASICS shoes showcased for the World Championships in Eugene.

Introduction

Ahead of the World Championships in Eugene, ASICS brought a lineup of special edition shoes to its onsite van, spanning everything from carbon-plated race day rockets to a cross country spike with replaceable pins. Here is what makes each one worth a look, and who each shoe is really for.

ASICS Metaspeed Edge+

The Metaspeed Edge+ is a well-loved racer with a lot of toe spring and a smooth, propulsive ride. It is one of the favorites in the lineup for good reason, and the special edition styling for Eugene only adds to the appeal. If you want a shoe saved for race day, this is the one in the family built for it.

ASICS Novablast 3

The Novablast 3 uses FF Blast Plus foam and lands with a soft, almost max-cushion feel. Fans of the earlier Novablast versions will recognize the ride, but this one is described as the best of both worlds with better foam. Testers have already put serious mileage on it, including runs of 16 to 18 miles that felt great right out of the box. The special edition colorways come out September 1 at $140.

ASICS Magic Speed 2

The original Magic Speed was fairly firm and a bit polarizing, even with its nice rocker. The Magic Speed 2 fixes that with more cushion, a carbon-infused TPU plate, solid rubber traction, and a good rocker, making it a fast shoe that is far more approachable.

What makes the update especially smart is the geometry. It pairs directly with the Metaspeed Edge+, sharing the same feel underfoot, just a touch firmer in its FF Blast Plus midsole than the turbo-based racer. The idea is simple: put big training miles on the Magic Speed 2 and save the Metaspeed Edge+ for race day.

ASICS Hyper Speed

The Hyper Speed is a low-stack, firmer shoe aimed at lightweight, efficient runners, with a traditional racing flat style and Flight Foam midsole. It is a natural fit for a high school runner or anyone racing in that Kimbamba-style flat range. It comes in under $100 at $90.

ASICS Gel-Kayano 29

The white special edition Gel-Kayano 29 might look like something you would not dare take on a muddy trail, but as a stability shoe it is a very comfortable, solid performer. It runs on FF Blast Plus foam with a bit of Gel, and if you love the Gel, this may be one of the last years to get it.

A notable change: the plastic truss system on the bottom is gone, which saves weight and rigidity and gives a more natural feel through the stride. The shoe is clearly transitioning to a different type of ride. Compared directly with the Saucony Tempest, the Kayano 29 is a bit more traditional, with a plush, comfortable ride and uppers, and it handled an 18-mile first run out of the box without complaint.

ASICS Resurgence Cross Country Spike

Cross country is the fall alternative to track for high school and college athletes, run over grass, golf courses, and park courses that can get muddy and sloppy. Trail shoes are protective but carry a lot of shoe; track spikes are fast but lack traction. The Resurgence splits the difference.

It weighs about 160 grams, sits low to the ground, and uses a rubberized outsole so it can cross all kinds of surfaces. The lugs are more aggressive than a trail shoe’s, and the real weapon is replaceable pins up to half an inch long for clawing into soft ground. The mesh upper is very breathable, and the colorway is inspired by a velociraptor, a nod from the designer that genuinely shows in the palette. It was developed and tested with ASICS athletes over multiple versions.

Buying Advice

If you are building a rotation, the most useful pairing here is the Magic Speed 2 for daily tempo work and the Metaspeed Edge+ for race day, since they share the same geometry and feel. The Novablast 3 covers long, easy miles with cushioning, the Gel-Kayano 29 handles stability needs, and the Hyper Speed and Resurgence serve specialized niches: efficient flat-style racing and soft, muddy cross country courses respectively.

Conclusion

This special edition lineup shows how well ASICS covers the distance running spectrum, from max-cushion trainers to a featherweight cross country spike. Match the shoe to your training role and most runners will find something here that fits.
