Asics Gel Kayano 29 Review: A Smoother, Lighter Stability Trainer

The Kayano 29 trims weight, refines the heel geometry, and delivers a balanced mildly bouncy ride that makes easy miles genuinely pleasant.

Introduction

The Kayano 28 made a big swing, rethinking how stability was handled in the line, but it still came across as heavy and a bit clunky. The 29 is where those changes start to pay off. The weight drops, the heel geometry gets a subtle but meaningful reshaping, and the ride becomes more balanced underfoot. This is not a fast shoe, and it is not trying to be. It is a premium stability trainer built for easy miles and long runs, and on that brief it delivers.

Who This Shoe Is For

This is a training shoe for runners who log easy miles, maybe some long runs, and want a stable, comfortable platform that does not feel like a chore to wear. If you liked the direction of the Kayano 28 but found it too heavy or too squishy, the 29 addresses almost all of that. It is not a lightweight racer and should not be picked up for tempo days or fast intervals.

Main Strengths

The first improvement is weight. The Kayano 28 came in at 10.9 ounces, and the 29 drops to 10.5 ounces. On paper that is a modest reduction, but it feels lighter than the number suggests. It is not a light shoe by any stretch, yet it feels far more tolerable and far easier to get miles in than its predecessor.

The second change is the heel bevel, which is now slightly more posterior-lateral and better sculpted. It sits under the foot instead of a little farther back, and that makes the heel noticeably less clunky. Combined with the extended external heel counter, which locks the heel down without feeling rigid, the rearfoot experience is one of the strongest parts of the shoe.

The outsole is now full ground contact, with no gap, so the transition from heel to toe is really smooth. Forefoot flexibility is also well judged: not too much, not too little.

Ride and Stability Feel

The FF Blast Plus foam provides a mildly bouncy, softer ride without being squishy or unstable. It is genuinely pleasant to run in, and the forefoot is no longer as mushy as before. The whole ride feels much more balanced than the Kayano 28.

On the stability side, the light Trusstic System is still in place. In practice, the stability level feels similar to the older GT-2000, while the new GT-3000 reads as a mild stability shoe. The Kayano 29 sits as a moderate stability shoe in a premium package, which is a useful spot in the lineup for runners who need real support without a rigid experience.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The 10.5-ounce weight still places this firmly in the daily trainer category. Runners looking for a fast or lightweight option will want to look elsewhere. Also, if you only need very mild guidance rather than moderate stability, something lower in the stability range may suit you better.

Buying Advice

If you want a stable, comfortable shoe for easy runs and long runs, and you appreciated the cushioning and rearfoot security of recent Kayanos but found them heavy or unbalanced, the 29 is a compelling choice. The improvements to weight, heel geometry, and foam all point the same direction: a more tolerable, more pleasant daily trainer.

Conclusion

The Asics Gel Kayano 29 fixes most of what held back the previous version. It is lighter, the heel feels better sculpted, the full ground-contact outsole smooths the transition, and the FF Blast Plus midsole delivers a balanced mildly bouncy ride. As a moderate stability trainer in a premium package, it is an easy shoe to recommend for easy and long miles.
