Introduction

Very few running shoes have a history like the ASICS Gel-Cumulus. The first version arrived back in 1999, and the line has been a fixture of the brand’s road lineup ever since. Within the ASICS gel family, three models stand out: the Nimbus as the premium daily trainer, the Gel-Kayano as the stability option, and the Cumulus as the more straightforward daily trainer of the trio. Version 27 continues that role, priced at $140.

The honest summary is that the Gel-Cumulus 27 is the reliable commuter car of running shoes. Almost nothing has changed from the previous version except the upper, and the ride remains exactly what returning fans expect: solid, dependable, and completely unexciting in the most deliberate sense of the word.

Who This Shoe Is For

The Gel-Cumulus 27 is built for the runner who buys the same shoe year after year, opens the closet, and already knows what they are getting. There is a genuine audience for this kind of consistency, the same crowd that keeps the Brooks Ghost and the Nike Pegasus in steady rotation. If you want a traditional, no-surprises daily trainer for five to ten mile runs, this fits the brief.

Fit is a key consideration. The shoe sits on one of ASICS’s wider lasts, and the upper is a bit roomy. Runners with higher-volume or slightly wider feet will likely get along with it well, while narrow-footed runners may struggle to get a precise lockdown. The engineered mesh upper breathes adequately without being remarkable.

Main Strengths

The midsole uses ASICS’s FF Blast Plus foam, distinct from the more environmentally focused Blast Plus Eco found in the Nimbus. Stack height is 38.5 mm in the heel and 30.5 mm in the forefoot for men, with the women’s version running 1 mm lower. A pure gel segment is hidden in the heel; the visible gel of older generations is gone, but the cushioning legacy carries on.

The saving grace of this shoe is its weight. At 9.4 oz (265 g) in a men’s size 9, it sits on the lighter side of the daily trainer category, which keeps it moving despite a midsole that lacks real bounce or energy return. The ride is not soft like the Nimbus; it feels denser and more grounded.

The outsole is a rubberized EVA blend rather than a dedicated rubber compound, a setup that delivers increased durability without piling on weight. The wide platform also gives the shoe a stable, planted feel underfoot, which adds confidence on easy recovery days.

Things to Consider Before Buying

This is not a fast shoe, and it does not pretend to be. There is no inherent pop, and even when legs feel good on a run, the shoe resists being picked up. The wide platform gives stability but can feel like a bit much shoe, less like a brick and more like a boat: light enough to float, but broad and unhurried.

In a fiercely competitive sub-$150 category, the Cumulus sits toward the bottom of the tier. The ASICS Novablast 5 costs the same $140 and offers livelier foam, a more nimble platform, and a smoother rolling stride. Other strong options at similar prices include the New Balance 880 and the bouncy Neo Zen, both of which bring more excitement to daily miles.

Buying Advice

If you are shopping in this price range and want a do-everything, fun, lighter trainer, the Novablast 5 or similar models will likely be the better pick. The Gel-Cumulus 27 makes sense primarily for two groups: loyal Cumulus wearers who want their familiar ride with minimal changes, and runners who value a dependable, traditional daily trainer and simply do not care about foam innovation.

For version 28, the wish list would be straightforward: a more engaging upper (bring back the stretchy knit tongue that made earlier versions comfortable), a slightly softer feel, and a more streamlined shape for better nimbleness. None of that would require reinventing the shoe, just freshening it up.

Conclusion

The ASICS Gel-Cumulus 27 earns a respectable but middling overall verdict: solid on fit for most feet, functional and reliable in every way, and unremarkable by design. It is a legend for the sake of being a legend, a shoe that gets the job done without a single surprise in either direction. For traditionalists, that is precisely the point. For everyone else, the same money buys more fun elsewhere.
