We put the Arctica 8x8 hardcover sketchbook through ink, colored pencil, markers, gouache, and acrylic paint to see where it shines and where it falls short.

Introduction

Some art supplies sit on your wishlist for years. The Arctica Sketchbook is one of those: beautiful on the shelf, intriguing on the listing, and easy to put off buying. We put it through a full round of testing with ink, colored pencil, gouache, markers, and even acrylic paint so you can decide whether it deserves a spot on your desk.

First Impressions and Build Quality

This is an 8x8 hardcover sketchbook with an elastic closure band and a genuinely attractive cover design. Out of the box it feels comparable to well-known premium sketchbooks in the same style, and the paper is 180 GSM (122 lb), bright white, thick, and ultra smooth. A spiral bound version is also available if hardcovers are not your preference. The pages are perforated, so finished pieces can be torn out cleanly, a nice touch if you like turning sketchbook work into prints or stickers.

Who This Product Is For

Arctica lists this sketchbook as intended for dry media, and that guidance matters. If your work is mostly pencil, ink, colored pencil, and markers, this is a very pleasant surface. If you are primarily a watercolor or heavy wet-media artist, the paper will buckle noticeably under washes, and you should look elsewhere or plan to prep pages with gesso first.

Testing with Colored Pencil and Ink

Ink and graphite both perform well here. Pencil blocks in smoothly, erases cleanly, and the smooth surface makes fine linework satisfying. Colored pencil application is smooth too, but the lack of tooth is the main trade-off: there is little texture for pigment to grip, so artists who build many light layers may find the paper frustrating. If you work in fewer, bolder passes, it handles the process beautifully.

A small gouache test, used for spot details over an ink drawing, worked out well, so light accents of wet media are not off the table even though this is officially a dry-media book.

Marker Testing: Acrylic, Copic, and Ballpoint

This is where the paper impressed us most relative to expectations. Acrylic markers went on smoothly with no bleed-through, and Copic-style alcohol markers blended nicely with minimal show-through. Ballpoint pen also worked well. For a sketchbook marketed at dry media, the marker performance is a genuine strength and makes it a solid option for illustrators who like swatching and blending on the page.

Acrylic Paint and Gesso: Pushing Past the Limits

Curiosity demanded a proper stress test, so pages were prepped with two layers of gesso and painted over with acrylic. The result was better than expected: the pages buckled only a little, not badly, and a simple abstract painting held up well. With gesso prep, this sketchbook can genuinely handle finished acrylic pieces, though anything highly detailed may still introduce some buckling.

Buying Advice

Overall this is an easy sketchbook to recommend, with a rating around 4 out of 5 stars. The two complaints are fair: the ultra-smooth surface limits layered colored pencil work, and slightly thicker paper would make wet media more dependable. Everything else, from the cover design and elastic closure to perforated pages and marker performance, is excellent. It is also worth remembering that you do not need the most expensive supplies to make good art; the artist matters more than the materials.

Conclusion

The Arctica Sketchbook is a beautiful, well-built hardcover that rewards dry-media artists and surprises with its tolerance for markers and gessoed acrylic work. If you have had it on your wishlist, it is worth trying.
