Arc'teryx Sylon Pro Review: A Trail Shoe Built for Speed in the Mountains

First-run impressions of the Arc'teryx Sylon Pro trail shoe: snug form-fitting upper, Vibram MegaGrip outsole, and a surprisingly soft midsole with an aggressive rocker.

Introduction

The Arc’teryx Sylon Pro is the brand’s newest trail running shoe, pitched as a mountain shoe built for speed. After a solid first outing on mixed terrain, including smooth and moderate technical trail, a bit of mud, some icy patches, and even accidental stretches of road, it left a genuinely strong first impression. One of us put 18 miles on it on day one, which says a lot about how quickly this shoe earns trust.

First Impressions at the Trailhead

Out of the box, the soft knit collar looked like it might be a weak point, but there is real structure and nice padding behind the heel that makes the whole construction work. Once the laces were snug, the fit felt like a form-fitting extension of the foot: very secure through the midfoot and midsole zone, with plenty of toe room.

Two small caveats came up. The laces came untied fairly quickly, and the small lace garage was abandoned almost immediately as fiddly. And sizing matters: both testers went down, one a full size and a half and the other a full size. The shoe takes a little effort to get into thanks to the sock-like build, but once in, the fit stayed comfortable for an hour-and-a-half to three-hour runs.

Grip: Vibram MegaGrip Delivers

The outsole uses a Vibram MegaGrip light base, a tried-and-true compound, paired with 6mm lugs. It gripped confidently across everything the day threw at it, including fairly tacky ice, a surface where few outsoles perform well. Even on road sections, the push-off felt pleasant despite the lugs.

Midsole and Ride: Softer Than Expected

The foam is noticeably softer than in any other Arc’teryx shoe we have run in, with visible compression already after the first run. Combined with a more aggressive rocker than expected, the ride feels propulsive and natural, rolling forward smoothly in most trail conditions. Compared with the brand’s more common Norvan, which felt flat and heavy underfoot, the Sylon Pro feels livelier and better balanced.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The main trade-off is heat. The Matrix upper is durable and feels good against the foot, but both testers noticed warm, slightly sweaty feet even in dry, cool conditions, likely due to the plastic overlays. In 45-degree mountain weather it felt fine, but in warmer conditions it could be a lot. Also budget for the sizing: expect to go down at least half to a full size, and be patient with the lace garage.

Who Should Buy the Sylon Pro

This is a shoe for runners who want a snug, form-fitting trail shoe with a quick, propulsive feel for mountain terrain, long ascents, and technical descents. If you typically run in hot climates or your feet run warm, weigh that against the breathable upper concerns. If you mostly stay in cooler mountain environments, it fits the brief almost perfectly.

Buying Advice

Size down at least half a size (a full size or more worked for our testers), snug the laces properly rather than relying on the lace garage, and give the shoe a short break-in run to let the sock-like collar settle. It is an easy shoe to recommend for mountain-focused runners who prioritize grip and a natural, quick ride.

Conclusion

The Arc’teryx Sylon Pro backs up its mountain-speed tagline with standout grip, a surprisingly soft and propulsive midsole, and a fit that disappears on the foot. The warm upper and sizing quirks are worth noting, but after 18 trouble-free first miles, this is a shoe worth coming back to.
