Anta Guanjun AG Saker Speed RC Review: Fast, Fun, and a Little Scary

A carbon-plated trail racing shoe with big stack and serious pace, built for smooth terrain rather than technical ground.

Introduction

Anta is a very large brand abroad with a range spanning road running shoes and, now, trail racing. The Guanjun AG Saker Speed RC is its entry into that trail racing category, and it makes a strong first impression: a tall stack of energetic foam, a plate underfoot, and a ride that encourages you to run faster than you planned. On our first runs, even uphill segments came out quicker than expected. It is a fun shoe out of the box, but that speed comes with caveats that matter depending on where you run.

Ride and Stack

There is a lot of stack here, and the shoe is distinctly bottom-heavy. A rigid plate sits inside the midsole and pokes out slightly at the heel; the material is labeled in a way that is not clearly translated, so we cannot confirm whether it is carbon fiber. The foam is genuinely energetic, with a noticeable squishy bounce, and the plate moderates that energy while helping maintain an aggressive forefoot rocker. The result is a shoe that rolls you off the toe very nicely and rewards smooth, fast running.

That said, the bottom-heavy character cuts both ways. On smooth surfaces it feels lively and quick; on uneven ground it feels less planted.

Upper and Fit

The upper is a thin engineered mesh with a matrix-like texture that is breathable and feels durable. The fit is accommodating rather than narrow: not super wide, but there is definitely room in the foot. A soft, fully integrated sock knit collar adds comfort around the ankle.

The trade-off is lockdown. Because the mesh is so thin, it does not hold the foot to the footbed as much as we wanted, which became noticeable once the terrain turned rocky or off-camber. There is also real lace bite: you feel nearly every lace, especially on descents at the top of the lacing chain, and that pressure lingered after the run ended.

Ride and Performance

Underfoot, the Saker Speed RC recalls other plate-equipped trail racers: the Mizuno Wave Daichi-style aggressive racers, the ASICS MetaFujiSpeed, and the original The North Face VECTIV, the first trail shoe with a carbon plate. Like those, it is a for-better-or-for-worse design. The pace benefit is real, and the rocker keeps you rolling efficiently, but confidence on technical ground is limited.

This is a shoe for the smooth stuff. We would not trust it right away on even moderately technical terrain, and it is not a pick for high, rocky country. Long, smooth race segments like those found at Western States are a much better match, and it would be a fun choice for a gravel race or a very light trail race.

Traction and Outsole

The outsole uses a Vibram Megagrip Lite-base construction, and on most of the terrain we covered, grip was fine with no problems. It struggled only in serious mud, where the lugs did not dig in or hold and there was a little slippage. On gravel roads and hardpacked trail, the traction held up well.

Buying Advice

Choose the Anta Guanjun AG Saker Speed RC if your races and training runs stay on smooth gravel, fire roads, and light trail, and you want a max-stack plated shoe that makes easy pace feel effortless. Skip it if your routes include rocky singletrack, off-camber sections, or muddy ground, where the thin upper and modest lug bite undermine confidence. It is an intriguing, fast, and fun shoe for the right terrain, and one worth watching as a full review follows.

Conclusion

The Anta Guanjun AG Saker Speed RC is a fun, energetic trail racer with big stack, a plate-driven rocker, and legit Vibram Megagrip Lite-base traction for smooth ground. Its thin upper, limited lockdown, lace bite, and mud performance keep it out of technical territory, but for gravel races and light trail courses, it is a genuinely exciting option from a brand newly entering the trail racing space.
