Altra Vanish Carbon 3 Review: Altra's Best Racing Shoe Yet, But Not the Fastest

Altra's latest carbon racer gets new supercritical foam, a 4mm drop and a more approachable ride. A strong trainer-racer that falls short of the top race-day shoes.

Introduction

The Vanish Carbon 3 is Altra’s latest carbon plate racing shoe and a significant overhaul of the line that produced the Vanish Carbon 2. It brings new midsole foam, a higher 4mm drop and a more rounded, approachable character than earlier versions. At £220 or $240, it sits at the cheaper end of the super shoe price spectrum, though it is also heavier than most of its rivals. After testing it across track reps, a steady 10k and a long run, the verdict is clear: this is Altra’s best racing shoe yet, and the most enjoyable one, but it is not quite a top-tier race day weapon.

Who This Product Is For

The Vanish Carbon 3 suits runners who want a carbon shoe they can use often across fast training days, not just on race day. If you are committed to the Altra ecosystem and value the brand’s foot-shaped, anatomical toe box, this is easily the most compelling option Altra has produced. It also works well for runners who found earlier zero-drop carbon models too demanding for long runs, since the new 4mm drop and rocker make it far more accessible.

Runners chasing personal bests at their absolute A race, however, will find more aggressive, lighter alternatives elsewhere.

Design and Midsole

The upper is a lightweight mesh with Altra’s classic anatomical roomy toe box, rather than the pointed taper seen on most racing shoes. There is light padding around the heel and a flexible, minimal construction that disappears on the foot.

The midsole uses a new supercritical foam called Vanisher, which is bouncy, responsive and noticeably softer and springier than previous Vanish Carbon models. A full-length carbon plate with a split toe design is intended to better engage the big toe, and there is a fairly pronounced rocker profile that makes the shoe feel at times like it has more than a 4mm drop.

Fit and Sizing

Fit runs a little roomy, which is by design. The tested UK 8.5 (US 9.5) was half a size down from the tester’s usual UK 9, and it worked well because Altra’s toe boxes come up generous. If you are between sizes, going smaller is the safer call, and if you sit at the smaller end of your usual size, half a size down is worth considering.

Even with the wide toe box, the heel and midfoot hold is good, and for runners with narrower feet the fit does not feel sloppy. The upper is unfussy and well designed: flexible at the heel, comfortable throughout, and it was not felt at all during runs, which is exactly what a racing upper should do.

How It Rides

Across roughly 70km of testing, including 400m and mile reps on the track, a steady 10k and a 22.5k long run, the Vanish Carbon 3 delivered the most enjoyable Altra running experience tested so far. The new foam brings a bouncier, more fun ride than any previous Altra carbon shoe.

The 4mm drop, higher than Altra’s traditional zero-drop identity but standard for racing shoes, combined with the rocker gives the shoe a familiar feel next to most super shoes. The first Vanish Carbon at zero drop put pressure on calves not used to that geometry; this one does not, and it was comfortable enough for a long, steady run.

At moderate and marathon-ish paces, the shoe cruises beautifully. It is comfortable, stable with a fairly wide base, and genuinely pleasant at easy-to-steady efforts, unlike some super shoes that feel clanky below race pace. Push to faster 5k-pace reps, however, and it feels slightly ponderous: not quite as snappy or propulsive as the top models, and it does not turn over as naturally at speed.

That character puts it firmly in the trainer-racer camp. It is a shoe you can use a lot through the week, but most testers would not reach for it on race day when a personal best is on the line.

Weight and Outsole

At 238g (8.4 oz) in a UK 8.5 / US 9.5, the Vanish Carbon 3 is on the heavier end of the super shoe field, roughly 60 to 100 grams heavier than most rivals in the same size. Part of that comes from generous outsole rubber coverage, which is a plus for durability and grip.

One quirk worth knowing: the narrow midsole cutout on the outsole is, ironically, the perfect size to catch and hold small stones. Runners who use gravel paths or rough roads should keep an eye on it.

Things to Consider Before Buying

  • Price is £220 / $240, at the cheaper end of the super shoe spectrum, which softens the blow of the trainer-racer character.
  • The weight is a real limitation against the leading race day shoes.
  • The split toe carbon plate and anatomical toe box are unique, but if you do not specifically want the Altra fit, rivals may serve you better.
  • The foam is excellent for a first iteration of this recipe; expect future versions to get lighter and sharper.

Buying Advice

If you are loyal to Altra or simply want one fast shoe that handles reps, tempos and long runs without beating you up, the Vanish Carbon 3 is a genuinely good buy and arguably the best value in that trainer-racer mould. For pure race day performance, options like the Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3, ASICS MetaSpeed Sky Tokyo, New Balance SC Elite v6 or Brooks Hyperion Elite 6 offer lighter builds, quicker transitions and more aggressive ride feel.

Conclusion

The Vanish Carbon 3 is a clear step forward: Altra’s best racing shoe to date, with a bouncy new foam, a more usable 4mm drop and a comfortable, stable ride that works across a full week of fast running. It just lacks the aggressive punch and low weight of the very best racers, leaving it around the middle of the super shoe pack rather than at the top. Buy it as a fast trainer-racer, not as your PB machine, and you will not be disappointed.
