Altra Forward Via Review: A Max Cushion Road Shoe With a Firm Edge
Altra's Forward Via brings a new super critical EGO Flow midsole and a 4mm drop to a foot-shaped road shoe, but the ride is firmer than the Max cushion label suggests.
Introduction
The Altra Forward Via is a max cushion road shoe built around a new nitrogen-infused super critical midsole foam, Altra EGO Flow. Altra describes it as designed for a smooth stride for miles, and it also marks a notable shift for the brand: the Forward Via uses a 4mm drop rather than the zero-drop geometry Altra is known for.
Specs are straightforward. The stack sits at 37mm in the heel and 33mm in the forefoot for that 4mm drop, and the shoe weighs 9.2 oz (262g) in a UK men’s 8.5. Pricing lands at $160 in the US and £145 in the UK.

After around 20 miles of testing across a mix of paces on roads and river paths, plus around 40k from another tester focused mostly on easy runs, a clear picture emerges: this is a comfortable, stable, well-fitting daily cruiser, but the ride is much firmer than the Max cushion label implies.
Who This Product Is For
The Forward Via makes the most sense for runners who already like Altra’s foot-shaped fit and want a more conventional road experience than older zero-drop Altra road shoes offered. The 4mm drop and updated midsole make it feel like a normal road shoe rather than something alien, and it works well for easy runs and solid, consistent-pace mileage.
It also suits runners who want stability and reliability from a firmer midsole. Altra shoes have always been stable, and that quality carries over here. If you like a more solid, ground-connected ride in a bigger stack, the Forward Via feels light and relatively precise for that profile.
It is not the shoe for runners chasing soft, bouncy, energetic cushioning on easy days or springy speed on faster runs. If you are used to softer midsoles and 8mm or 10mm drops from mainstream brands, this will feel like a very different proposition.
Main Strengths
The upper is the headline. Altra’s signature foot-shaped fit delivers that sweeping anatomical toe box, with loads of room for toes to splay naturally. The engineered mesh is classic Altra, the gusseted tongue is plush, and the padded heel collar pairs with a solid heel counter for extra support. Despite all the forefoot space, the midfoot locks down securely and the heel collar holds snugly, so the overall feel is a comfortable, disappearing fit on the foot from the very first run.

Stability is another genuine strength. The firm EGO Flow foam, a TPU/EVA blend, gives the shoe a sturdy, dependable platform, and the exposed midsole section seems to hold up well. The outsole is good too, with a flex-grooved rubber covering, solid coverage into the heel and all the high-impact areas, and chunky lugs that feel almost trail-shoe-like in character.
The shoe is also light for its stack, and with a light, faster foot turnover the ride smooths out noticeably. At easy, steady paces with good form, it delivers reasonable shock absorption and a competent, unobtrusive daily-trainer experience.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The midsole is the sticking point. Despite being marketed as a Max cushion shoe, the EGO Flow foam is decidedly on the firm side, firmer than expected from a super critical foam. It is not in the same soft-but-energetic league as the Brooks Glycerin Max, and even next to shoes like the Brooks Glycerin 22, New Balance 1080 or ASICS Nimbus territory, you will immediately notice a harder edge. At faster paces where you punch more into the ground, the forgiving protection you would expect from a high stack is missing, and there is little bounce or energy return. More ground comes back up than you might want across a range of paces.
The geometry also does not push you forward. Transitions are not especially smooth, and this is not a versatile shoe for faster running. If you want firmness and a direct ride, you may prefer something with a lower profile anyway, and there is a fair question about the benefit of the extra stack without extra cushioning or bounce to show for it.

Sizing is simple, with one caveat. The Forward Via fits true to your usual Altra size, and testers recommend staying there. Do not size down to reduce the roominess in the forefoot; that space is the point of the shoe, and the toe knuckle area holds snug while the midfoot and heel stay secure. If you have never worn Altra shoes, be prepared for a very wide, roomy forefoot that feels unusual at first.
Buying Advice
If you are an existing Altra fan, the Forward Via is a genuine, positive development: more accessible, more road-appropriate, and easier to pick up and run in than previous versions. If you love the anatomical toe box and want a stable, firm, cushioned daily cruiser, this is a solid choice.
If you are new to Altra and used to softer midsoles and bigger drops from other brands, treat this as a very different shoe rather than a substitute for what you already run in. Alternatives worth considering include the Brooks Glycerin 22, Brooks Ghost Max, the Saucony Hurricane 24 for a stability-leaning option, and the Brooks Glycerin Max if you want a max stack shoe with more softness and energy return. The Inov-8 Roadfly also comes in considerably cheaper while offering a similar balance of directness and protection with a smaller stack.

At $160 in the US and £145 in the UK, the price sits at the upper end of the daily trainer market, which makes the firm ride a harder sell unless the foot-shaped fit and stability are exactly what you are after.
Conclusion
The Altra Forward Via is a comfortable, stable, well-made road shoe and a real step forward for the brand’s road lineup, but it is an acquired taste. The firm EGO Flow midsole undercuts the Max cushion promise, and the ride only truly works for runners who want stiffness, reliability and protection in a bigger stack. Altra loyalists will find a lot to like; runners raised on softer, higher-drop shoes should look elsewhere.
