Adidas Adizero Takumi Sen 9 Review: A Fast Racing Shoe That Barely Changed

The Takumi Sen 9 keeps the ride and fit of its predecessor with a few small upper tweaks, and it still shines at faster paces.

Introduction

The Adidas Adizero Takumi Sen 9 arrived earlier than anyone expected. Many riders of the previous model expected a much later release, but the shoe is already widely available. For fans of the Takumi Sen 8, one of the standout fast shoes of the last two years, the short version of this review is simple: very little has changed, and that is mostly good news.

After a 13-mile outing that mixed easy long-run miles with a five-mile race at the end, the verdict was consistent. This is still a shoe that feels like a proper fast racing shoe, especially once the pace picks up.

Who This Shoe Is For

The Takumi Sen 9 is aimed at runners who want a lightweight, aggressive racing shoe for tempo runs, races, and faster workout days. It is not a plush daily trainer. The midsole uses 33 millimeters of Lightstrike Pro, which offers enough protection for longer efforts, but the shoe clearly comes alive at quicker paces rather than easy jogging.

If your week includes dedicated speed days or goal races from 5K up to the half marathon distance, this profile fits naturally. Runners who prefer soft, cushioned easy-day shoes should look elsewhere.

What Changed From the Takumi Sen 8

The changes are minimal. The upper has a slightly different cut with a couple of new structural design elements. Where the previous version used a zigzag underlay, the 9 uses a smoother panel that looks a bit like a bandage across the midfoot. It does not appear to add meaningful weight, and forefoot support feels fine.

The tongue is not gusseted, just a flat lightweight design, and the upper remains very bright in colorway and very breathable in feel. Fit and ride feel essentially the same as last year, with one tester noting the 9 may even fit slightly better.

Main Strengths

The biggest strength is continuity. If you loved the Takumi Sen 8, you will almost certainly love the 9. The lockdown is excellent: the upper locks the foot down well, though expect to spend a little time adjusting the lacing on the first run or two to dial it in. It is less fiddly than figuring out some other racing shoes.

At faster paces the shoe feels genuinely quick, and the 33 millimeters of Lightstrike Pro kept legs feeling good even after 13 miles that ended with a race effort. And it looks great, which never hurts on the start line.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Sizing is the main gotcha. This shoe runs a little long, a trait it shared with last year’s model. Going down a half size delivered a perfect fit for one tester, so plan accordingly if you are ordering online.

The other consideration is value. The Takumi Sen 9 carries a $180 price, while the previous model has been spotted on sale for around $90. Since the differences between the two are minor, buying the 8 at a discount is a legitimate way to get almost the same shoe for half the money. The 9 makes more sense if you want one of the new colorways and the slightly revised upper design.

Buying Advice

If you are upgrading from the Takumi Sen 8 purely for performance, there is not much reason to rush. If you are new to the Takumi Sen line or want a fresh fast shoe for race day, the 9 is an easy recommendation: a light, breathable, locked-down racing shoe with enough Lightstrike Pro cushioning to handle a long warm-up and still race at the end.

Conclusion

The Adidas Adizero Takumi Sen 9 is a conservative update to a shoe that already worked. Small upper refinements, the same fast feel, and a fit that may be slightly improved make it a safe buy for racers. Just size down half a size, and consider whether the previous model on sale covers your needs just as well.
