Jetboil Zip:

Jetboil Zip

The catch is what it is designed for. The Zip is essentially a kettle: ideal for boil-in-the-bag and dehydrated meals, but not a cooking stove. Its regulator is also the weakest part of the package. The usable band between a simmer and a boil-over is very narrow, so you end up switching the flame off and on to hold the right setting. There is no built-in igniter either, so a lighter is still worth carrying. The Zip sits at the cheaper end of the Jetboil range, typically around £65 to £78, while larger Jetboil models can cost £120 to £150 or more.

Trangia Mini:

Trangia Mini

OEX Etna

The OEX Etna is one of the cheapest ways into gas cooking. The pot set costs roughly £20, the burner around £10, and a small canister stand about £5, so a complete setup lands near £35. The pot has baffles underneath that spread heat around the base.

It is not without irritations. The set does not stay together in transit, and it falls apart as soon as you lift it out, which makes packing fiddly. Assembled, the stack is tall, and on anything but flat ground it becomes precarious, particularly once the lid is on; a separate canister stand helps considerably. A small steel windshield with ground stakes, available for under £10, keeps it usable in a breeze. The regulator is genuinely good, with a wide range from full power down to a bare simmer, and the generous pot is better for boil-in-the-bag meals than the Jetboil, since you can submerge a pouch in plenty of water. It is bulkier than the alternatives, though slimmer cook sets and smaller canisters can trim it down. As a first stove, it is excellent value.

The Jobsworth follows the same integrated design as the Jetboil at roughly £30. It packs into its own container when assembled correctly, comes with a canister stand, and holds a slightly larger volume than the Zip, being a little taller and wider.

The engineering is where the saving shows. Once clipped together it is rattly and loose rather than locked tight, and it does not take much to wobble the pot free. That said, the regulator is better than the Zip’s, adjusting smoothly without the flame cutting out, and it adds a push-button igniter, though a lighter is still worth carrying. The camouflage sleeve lifts off for washing, and the pot handles pop out so the container can double as a frying pan. It also includes a clip-in adaptor for a frying pan or separate pot, something the Zip does not provide. One caveat worth knowing: a later production batch of this stove was recalled over a fault, and it is not clear whether further batches followed.

OneTigris Evil Eye

The OneTigris Evil Eye is a wood burning stove that folds flat into its own sleeve. It is noticeably heavy, since it is made from engineered sheet metal, and it has to be slotted together by hand, which is fiddlier than a folding design.

Once built, though, it opens into a generous firebox that holds more wood and burns longer than smaller alternatives, so you spend less time feeding it. There is no heat regulation at all, since a fire gives a constant output, so simmering is not an option. It also produces an open flame, which rules it out in places where fires are restricted. Used sensibly, it brings campfire cooking to a woodland camp in a far more controlled way, and it is fun with children for toasting marshmallows. The panels have shown no sign of warping and stay rigid in use. At under £30 it costs considerably less than the folding wood stoves, which get more expensive in their larger sizes.

For anyone who enjoys the ritual of a fire but wants something contained, this is a satisfying and inexpensive way to get it.

Titanium is the whole point of this mug, and it is remarkably light for its volume. The gas canister nests inside for packing, and it is worth wrapping the canister in a little tissue first, since metal against metal at the base tends to rust and stain over time. Fill levels are marked on the outside, which takes the guesswork out of measuring water.

It is best understood as a water heater and drinking vessel rather than a cooking pot. Coffee is effortless, and for dehydrated meals you simply boil the water and pour it in. Boil-in-the-bag cooking is not really its job. For the quality on offer it is reasonably priced, and as part of a compact set it is a pleasure to use on summer trips.

Lixada

This burner follows the same general idea as the OEX stove but shrinks it dramatically. It is extremely light and disappears into a pack, and the regulation is good and easy to control, with a smooth range rather than an all-or-nothing flame.

The limitation is wind. Even with a windshield wrapped around it, a gusty day can put the flame out entirely, which makes it a fair weather piece of kit. On calm summer trips, though, it is hard to beat for the size and weight.

Naturehike

Stability is the headline here. The legs extend in two stages: one set supports the pot, and a second set widens the base, which is easy to overlook and transforms how secure the stove feels under load. A braided hose connects the burner to the canister, so the canister sits off to the side instead of forming a tall tower underneath the pot.

The stove has a push-button igniter, and the regulator sits on the canister, giving a wide range from a gentle simmer to a hard boil. In cold conditions the canister can be inverted to help it run. It stores in its own protective case with the hose attached, so it travels without damage. At roughly £20 to £25 for the stove, it is a lot of capability for the money.

Naturehike

This is a four-pot aluminium alloy set, similar in material to the OEX pots but without baffles underneath. The lids click in and stay put, which matters when you are loading a pouch into a pot of water; they do not slide around the way the OEX lid does. Rubber handles stay cool enough to lift, and the set includes a ladle, three bowls and a small wooden spatula. The two lids double as pans, and the two large pots handle stews or shared meals with room to spare. Boiling a full bottle of mulled wine took almost no time at all.

With a couple of stoves running, this could be the only pot set a small group needs. It is around £20 to £25, which makes it a straightforward upgrade over a single pot.

Match the stove to the trips you actually take. If you mostly rehydrate meals and want speed with genuine wind resistance, an integrated gas system is the simplest answer, and the Jetboil Zip remains the reference point. The Jobsworth offers much of the same convenience for less money, provided you accept the looser assembly.

If cooking properly matters more than boiling speed, the Trangia Mini rewards the extra fuel handling with a silent flame and real versatility. On a tight budget, the OEX Etna gets you cooking for around £35, and the Naturehike stove paired with the Naturehike pot set delivers stability, simmer control and a full cook set for a similar outlay.

For fast and light summer trips, the Lixada titanium mug and Lixada burner make a tiny, low-cost kit, as long as you accept that wind will end the conversation. And for woodland camps where a contained fire is welcome, the OneTigris Evil Eye adds an experience that no gas burner can replicate.

总结

There is no single best stove here, only the best match for how you camp. Prioritise wind performance and pack size and an integrated gas system wins. Prioritise real cooking and quiet operation and liquid fuel is worth the extra effort. Prioritise cost and you can still put together a capable setup for well under £40. Decide what you want to cook, how much weight you will carry and where you will pitch, and the choice becomes much clearer.
