Introduction

Max-cushion training shoes have become the most competitive corner of the running shoe market, and the Brooks Glycerin Max sits right at the top of the price bracket, priced at $200. But it is not the only choice. The Puma MagMax, Brooks Ghost Max 2, New Balance 1080 v14, New Balance SC Trainer v3, and Skechers Max Road 6 all target similar territory, each with very different price points and design philosophies.

This guide will break down what makes each pair worth considering, and where spending extra money actually gets you something.

The New Benchmark: Brooks Glycerin Max

The Glycerin Max is built around an all-new supercritical foam called DNA Tuned, with a massive stack height of about 45mm at the heel and 39mm at the forefoot. Unlike most dual-foam setups, this foam is softer at the back and firmer at the front, keeping the shoe comfortable underfoot while making the roll-through and transition smoother and faster than the stack height would suggest.

Its most outstanding quality is comfort without the ‘stuck in the mud’ feeling that plagues many max-thick-soled shoes. It offers protection, genuine rebound, and a ride that still feels natural, even when landing on the forefoot. It is also incredibly durable: after 50 miles, the outsole showed virtually no wear, and the midsole had no creasing, partly thanks to the rubber coverage on the forefoot and the recessed foam underneath. It rides just as it looks, and there is good reason to argue it is the most comfortable high-priced shoe currently available. Weight is a fair question — it is about the same as or slightly lighter than heavier max-thick-soled competitors, but not every shoe needs to be a lightweight racer.

At $200, it is not cheap, and buyers on smaller budgets will find better value elsewhere. But if you want one exceptional quality for that price, this shoe’s comfort and rebound deliver exactly that.

The Stability Alternative: Puma MagMax

The Puma MagMax is essentially the same weight as the Glycerin Max, but the ride feel is different. It is firmer, less bouncy, more serious underfoot, and emphasizes stability and protection. Puma could have completely marketed it as a stability shoe. It also feels slightly larger on foot, and the midsole construction makes it feel bottom-heavy in hand, despite the same weight on the scale.

It is very suitable for heavier or newer runners, run-walk users, and aggressive heel strikers who want maximum protection and grip. The grip is genuinely strong. Its shortfall is the fun factor: the Glycerin Max is both comfortable and fun, while the MagMax is more like a durable workhorse with extra cushioning.

The Value Pick: Brooks Ghost Max 2

The Ghost Max 2 is the shoe in the Brooks lineup closest to the Glycerin Max, with the same 5mm drop and similar curved platform geometry, just with less stack height. You can think of the Glycerin Max as an amplified version of the Ghost Max 2: softer, bouncier, better cushioned, with a foam feel that sinks deeper before pushing back, whereas the Ghost Max 2’s toe-off is faster.

At $150, it covers almost everything most runners need in a daily trainer: durable, reliable, stable, and very suitable for long periods on your feet. The original Ghost Max is also still a popular walking shoe and can now be found for around $120. If you don’t run long distances and don’t want to spend $200, this is an easy recommendation.

The Elevated Daily Trainer: New Balance 1080 v14

The 1080 v14 is a different kind of shoe. It is still soft and still max-cushioned in a broad sense, but with about 30mm at the forefoot, it retains ground feel, flexibility, and a more traditional ride experience. It is an elevated everyday workhorse: the best version of what a standard daily trainer should be, rather than an exaggerated super-thick-sole experience.

For pure everyday mileage, it can be called this year’s most popular daily trainer. It is not the pick for faster runs — that is where the Glycerin Max actually has more rebound and pep. It also provides solid protection for heavier runners, preventing softer shoes from bottoming out. The main question is whether the upgrade from the previous version justifies the price jump for your needs; it is still a very soft shoe, and if you liked the previous 1080, you will like this one.

The Plated Option: New Balance SC Trainer v3

The SC Trainer v3 is New Balance’s max-stack plated training shoe, and the only shoe here with a carbon fiber plate. Its value depends heavily on how you run. For faster runners at quicker paces, it can feel like a shoe priced at $180 purely because it has a plate, lacking a clear positioning within the lineup. For slower paces and relaxed mileage, it performs better: providing a comfortable, supportive, stable platform, with some snap from the stiff midsole.

When running longer distances and wanting more structure and less sink, it beats the Glycerin Max, and it is suitable for runners who want a plated trainer without the aggressiveness of a true racer. But if pure comfort is the goal, the Glycerin Max is clearly the more comfortable choice.

The Similar Vibe: Skechers Max Road 6

The Max Road 6 is the dark horse of this group. Its supercritical foam looks strikingly similar to the Glycerin Max’s midsole, and the feel when pressing into it is almost identical. On the first run, it delivered fun, rebound, support, decent stability, and a soft-but-not-squishy ride feel — exactly the same list of qualities that make the Glycerin Max stand out.

If you can find the Max Road 6 on sale, it is an excellent lower-priced alternative. The Glycerin Max arguably has a cleaner look and a more complete package, but as a max-cushion experience for the money, the Skechers delivers performance far beyond its price.

Overall Buying Advice

If budget is no object and you want the most comfortable shoe with genuine rebound for high-mileage training, the Brooks Glycerin Max is the standout. If you want that max-stack feel but prioritize stability and protection, the Puma MagMax is the better fit. If $200 feels steep, the Brooks Ghost Max 2 gets you most of the way there for $150, and the Skechers Max Road 6 is a strong bargain alternative when on sale.

For a more traditional, flexible daily trainer, the New Balance 1080 v14 is the polished choice. And if you specifically want a plated, structured platform for long distances, the SC Trainer v3 fills that niche, even if its positioning is less clear for faster runners.

Match the shoe to your pace, mileage, and the underfoot feel you actually want, and every one of these six shoes can earn its place in your rotation.

Conclusion

The max-cushion category now offers something for almost every runner and budget. The Glycerin Max sets the comfort and fun benchmark at $200, the Ghost Max 2 and Max Road 6 provide strong value, the MagMax and 1080 v14 cover stability and traditional daily training, and the SC Trainer v3 serves runners who want plate-driven structure. Choose based on the ride experience you want, not just the stack height on the spec sheet.
