MC2 Mount Bivy Tent Review: A 2.6 lb One-Person Shelter Worth a Second Look

A redesigned one-person bivy tent that weighs 2.6 lb, packs to roughly 15 by 4 inches, and pitches in about five minutes, with condensation and material stretch as the open questions.

Introduction

Bivy style shelters make a simple promise: a full night’s sleep in the smallest and lightest package you are willing to carry. MC2 Mount has built a reputation on well-made, genuinely waterproof tents at accessible prices, but its previous bivy tent missed that mark entirely. The design did not work in practice, and the model was withdrawn from the market.

The company has now returned to the category with a redesigned bivy tent, and the changes are substantial. Two versions are available, differing mainly in the shape of the foot box: one rounded, one more squared. This article focuses on the rounded-foot-box version, a single-wall, three-season, one-person shelter.

Who This Tent Is For

This is a one-person, three-season bivy tent aimed at solo campers who travel light: backpackers, bikepackers, and anyone covering long distances where packed volume matters more than living space. It is designed around airflow, with a generous amount of mesh, which points it squarely at warmer months.

Usable length is the first thing to check against your own measurements. The tent works for campers up to roughly 6 ft 4 in, and the comfortable limit sits around 6 ft 3 in to 6 ft 4 in. Taller users will find their head or feet touching the fabric.

The interior is sized for one person plus a reasonable amount of gear, so it also suits riders and hikers who want a small footprint without sleeping on top of their pack. It is not the right answer for campers who want a double-wall shelter, nor for those planning serious cold-weather trips.

Main Strengths: Materials and Build Quality

The shell is 15D nylon with a 3,000 mm hydrostatic head rating. Aluminium poles and aluminium stakes handle the structure, and the zippers are YKK. The bathtub floor uses taped seams, and the stitching throughout is tidy, with no loose threads visible. The tent comes in a single dark green colourway.

MC2 Mount’s other tents have earned a strong record for waterproofing and material quality, and this bivy tent appears to continue that pattern. The construction is the part that stands out most on close inspection: seam work, seam tape, and stitching all look carefully executed, which is exactly what you want from a shelter that has to keep you dry.

Packed Size, Weight, and Setup

Packed, the tent measures roughly 15 in by 4 in and weighs 2.6 lb. The included kit covers what you need on the trail: a storage bag with a drawstring closure, set-up instructions sewn directly into the bag, two fabric compression straps, two aluminium poles (one short, one long), 13 aluminium stakes, four guy lines, and a repair kit.

Pitching takes about five minutes. Stake out one side, insert the long pole, insert the short pole, stake out the remaining corners, and tension the guy lines. Because the inner is attached to the fly, the shelter can be pitched in rain without the sleeping area getting soaked first, and the single connected structure keeps the whole process quick.

For bikepacking or fast-and-light backpacking, the packed size is the headline. Fifteen inches by four inches takes up very little room in a pack or on a handlebar roll, and 2.6 lb is a low figure for a shelter with this much interior volume.

Interior Space and Ventilation

Peak height is 39 in, and the tent measures about 38 in across at its widest point before tapering towards the foot box. In practice that is enough room to sit up, change layers, and keep shoes, a pack, water, or a small stove in the vestibule area inside the door.

Ventilation comes from two openings: a large vent near the head and a smaller one at the foot box, supported by a broad mesh panel along the side. A storage pocket and a single hanging hook round out the interior. Because the inner and fly are one layer, the mesh and vents are doing all of the airflow work, and there is a noticeable amount of it.

Things to Consider Before Buying

This is a single-wall tent, meaning the fly and the inner are a single layer rather than two. Condensation is the classic trade-off with that construction, and how well the vent and mesh layout manages it will only be clear after real-world use. Airflow is the second open question, particularly on still, humid nights when there is nothing to move the air around.

The shell is made from silicone-treated nylon, a material that can stretch when it gets wet. How much stretch shows up in practice, and whether it affects the pitch or the usable interior space, is something to watch over time.

Length limits matter as well. Campers taller than about 6 ft 4 in should look at a different shelter, since the tapered foot box leaves no margin at that height.

Buying Advice

At the time of writing, the tent was listed at $140 on Amazon, with a 10 percent off coupon available then. Coupons come and go, so it is worth checking the current listing before ordering rather than assuming the discount is still there.

The closest point of comparison is the Snugpak Ionosphere, a well-liked one-person bivy style tent. Its price has climbed to around $300, which is hard to justify for a small polyester shelter, and Snugpak’s build quality has been inconsistent. The MC2 Mount offers a better design, better materials, a lighter weight, and a much lower price.

For solo travellers who fit within the length limit and accept the single-wall trade-off, this tent is a sensible purchase, provided the condensation question is answered in real conditions. Campers who want a double-wall shelter, or who regularly camp in cold and wet weather, should look at a different style of tent.

Conclusion

The redesigned MC2 Mount bivy tent is a genuine turnaround. It weighs 2.6 lb, packs down to about 15 in by 4 in, pitches in roughly five minutes, and shows careful construction in the details that matter most, all at a price that undercuts its closest rival by a wide margin. The remaining questions are condensation, airflow, and how the silicone-treated nylon behaves once it is wet, and those are worth tracking before you commit.
