Everyday Carry
Willowcraft Goods Lux Minimalist Wallet Review: A Redesigned Classic
A slimmer, handcrafted vertical wallet from Texas with an ingenious two-piece leather construction, three pockets, and room for serious everyday carry.
Introduction
Willowcraft Goods has redesigned the Lux minimalist wallet from the ground up, and the result is one of the more interesting wallets we have handled this year. It is a vertical flap wallet, handmade and hand stitched in Texas, built from vegetable-tanned Italian leather and shaped into a noticeably lower profile than the version it replaces. After several weeks of daily carrying, here is how it holds up.
The key question for any minimalist wallet is whether it earns its place in your pocket. The new Lux makes a strong case, provided the price fits your budget.
Build Quality and Materials
The version carried for this review uses blue and brown vegetable-tanned Duo leather from the Conceria Walpier Tannery in Italy, with Berta leather from the same tannery available as an alternative. Multiple leather and stitching color combinations are offered. The leather measures 2.2 mm thick, roughly 5.5 oz, and has a distinctive pebbled grain with a firm hand feel. This is not a soft, floppy wallet; it is structured and solid, and it never feels cheap.

Edge finishing is excellent throughout, with all cut edges burnished and polished, even on the interior. The hand saddle stitching on both sides is tidy and consistent, and new antique brass rivets on the back hold the construction together. The only branding is a single Willowcraft stamp on the top of the flap, which keeps the look clean.
Design and Layout
The clever part of the new Lux is how few pieces of leather it actually uses. The previous version stacked layers of leather and sewn straps, which made it thick. The redesign integrates the strap directly into a single piece of leather using just two cuts, wraps around the outside, and connects in the middle, with the front pocket piece tucked between two slits and riveted in place. It is a genuinely original construction that produces a slimmer wallet without sacrificing capacity.

In terms of layout, you get three pockets: a quick-access card pocket on the outside with a generous thumb cutout, a dedicated single-card compartment on the inside, and a larger rear compartment for extra cards and cash. The interior of the larger compartment includes a nylon pull string threaded through eyelets for easier retrieval; a leather pull strap and a no-strap option are also available. If the string is not to your taste, it can be cut out, and the eyelets still work as a lanyard attachment.
The original Lux measures 3 x 4 inches closed and weighs 1.9 oz (54 g). The wide version, intended for international bills wider than 70 mm, measures 3.4 x 4 inches closed and weighs 2.4 oz (70 g).
Everyday Carrying and Capacity
Carried daily with seven cards and five folded bills, the Lux settled in nicely. Out of the box the firm 5.5 oz leather is stiff, especially the front flap, but after a few days it breaks in and conforms to your contents. Cash users can also flip the arrangement, since the quick-access exterior pocket is spacious enough to hold folded bills while cards live inside.

On capacity testing, the maximum practical load was 10 cards and 20 bills at the same time, at which point the wallet was genuinely stuffed and difficult to remove from a pocket. Willowcraft’s stated figure of 12 cards and 30 bills appears to mean either-or capacity: 12 cards or 30 bills, or a mixture. At a typical seven-card load there was still room to spare. One minor caveat: the rear quick-access card can occasionally catch on the pull string and eyelets, though entering from the side avoids most fumbling.
Choosing Between Original and Wide
If your bills are 70 mm or narrower, such as American dollar bills, the original Lux is the right pick. If you carry wider international bills, the wide version adds about four tenths of an inch of width while keeping the same height, and it offers a striking dark mahogany on olive color combination.
Buying Advice
At roughly $100 for the original and about $115 for the wide version, this is not a budget purchase. But given the all-handmade construction, hand saddle stitching, premium 5.5 oz vegetable-tanned Italian leather, and a design unlike anything else on the market, the price is defensible. If you appreciate firm leather, unusual craftsmanship, and a low-profile carry, the Lux is easy to recommend.

Buyers who prefer soft, unstructured wallets or who want to spend less may want to look elsewhere, but for those who value original design and quality materials, this wallet justifies its place in the pocket.
Conclusion
The redesigned Willowcraft Goods Lux minimalist wallet solves the main complaint about its predecessor by going slimmer, and it does so through genuinely clever construction rather than simple downsizing. With excellent leather, careful stitching, thoughtful pocket layout, and a useful pull-tab option, it stands out as one of the best-executed handmade wallets we have seen recently, as long as the price fits your budget.
