Victorinox Alox Refined Range: Pocket Clips and Locking Blades Finally Arrive

The new Alox Refined lineup adds skeletonized scales, an integrated pocket clip, and a locking blade to the medium-sized Swiss Army knife, with three models to choose from.

Introduction

Victorinox has been busy expanding its Alox lineup this year, and the new Alox Refined range adds features that have been widely requested for a very long time. Until now, no medium-sized Swiss Army knife, including all the familiar 91 mm models, had ever sported an integrated pocket clip, and none offered a locking blade. The Alox Refined range changes both of those things at once.

There are three models in the range, all built on the familiar 93 mm Alox platform and available in red, silver, or dark blue: the OneFold, the Synergy, and the Synergy X. All are made in Switzerland. Here is how each one stacks up.

What Makes the Alox Refined Range Different

The most striking change is immediately visible: skeletonized aluminium scales on both the front and back of each knife. The cut-out design sets these models apart from every other Alox release and looks genuinely distinctive in all three colorways.

Then there is the pocket clip. This is a first for the medium-sized range in the brand’s 140-year history, and the implementation is impressive. It is a deep-carry design that sits discreetly in the pocket, and the clip’s back plate is recessed into the scales so it sits flush, minimizing bulk. The steel is springy with plenty of flex, so the knife slips in and out of the pocket with ease, even over thicker fabric like a jeans pocket. The clip is made from quite thin steel, so it could be bent out of shape with sufficient force, and since it is non-removable, that would be hard to fix. In normal use, though, it works really well.

It is also worth knowing that Alox blades and most Alox tools are thicker and more heavy-duty than those found on the familiar 91 mm models. The blade steel prioritizes corrosion resistance, toughness, and ease of sharpening over edge retention and hardness, consistent with previous Swiss Army knives.

Victorinox Alox Refined OneFold

The OneFold is the simplest model: a single-bladed folding knife with no other tools, in a slim single-layer construction at 9.5 mm thick and just 54 grams (1.9 oz). Its defining feature is the locking blade, another long-requested first for this size of knife.

Victorinox keeps the slip joint’s back spring and adds a liner lock on top, so the blade locks securely in place. The locked blade feels super secure, but releasing it requires overcoming both the liner lock tension and the back spring tension at the same time, which exposes your thumb to the closing blade and feels a bit risky. Larger Victorinox knives with this method include a firm half stop to hold the blade back while you get your fingers clear; the Alox version does not. With regular use this will likely become second nature, but it is worth being aware of.

There is also a legal consideration. In the UK, locking knives are treated like fixed blades and are illegal to carry in public without good reason, and the same appears to be true in Ireland, France, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. That rules this range out for everyday carry in those regions. The OneFold also faces stiff competition from dedicated single-blade folders with better steels, easier locking, and one-handed opening, though the pocket clip and scale design give it wider appeal, and the value proposition for a quality brand is strong.

Victorinox Alox Refined Synergy

The Synergy is a two-layer model with the same locking blade, slightly offset so it can share a layer with a very effective nail file and nail cleaner combination. The second layer holds the familiar 7 mm flathead scraper, pry tool with bottle opener, and wire stripper, plus the newer package opener, which includes a 3 mm flathead screwdriver that also works with some Phillips screws. That package opener lets you keep the main blade sharp for other jobs.

It measures 12 mm thick and weighs 75 g (2.7 oz), and of course it carries the same pocket clip. This is where Victorinox starts to shine: the tools are practical and desirable, and a two-layer knife makes a really good everyday carry option for those who can legally carry a locking blade.

Victorinox Alox Refined Synergy X

The Synergy X takes the Synergy and adds Victorinox’s excellent scissors, which are the same size as those on the 91 mm models and are a tool many people would not want to be without. That brings it to three layers, 15 mm thick, and 99 g (3.5 oz).

With the scissors, the locking blade for those who can carry one, the pocket clip, and the striking scale design, this is arguably the standout of the range. The main caveat is size: at three layers, it is a bit heavy and bulky for some people’s idea of everyday carry, especially compared with slimmer two-layer or bladeless options like the scissor-only Companion X Alox, which fits travel kits and places where knives are not allowed.

Pricing and Value

The OneFold is expected to retail at £49 or $56, the Synergy at £69 or $78, and the Synergy X at £85 or $96. Victorinox pricing has always been strong for the Swiss quality on offer, and these models are no exception.

Which One Should You Choose?

If you want the purest expression of the new design with the lowest weight, the OneFold is the entry point, though single-blade competition is fierce. If you want a practical two-layer everyday carry, the Synergy is the sweet spot. If scissors are non-negotiable, and for many people they are, the Synergy X is the one to pick. Anyone in a region with locking-knife restrictions will need to wait and hope for a slip-joint version in the future.

Conclusion

The Alox Refined range moves the needle for Victorinox, delivering a pocket clip and a locking blade that have been requested for decades. The skeletonized scales look great, the color options are all appealing, and the pricing is fair. The closing mechanism could benefit from a half stop for extra safety, and legal restrictions limit where the locking models can be carried, but for anyone who can legally carry one, this is a genuinely significant update to the medium-sized Swiss Army knife.
