Universal Wrenches and Sockets: Six All-in-One Tools Put to the Test

We test six universal wrenches and sockets that promise to replace entire tool sets, from pin-style sockets to adjustable ratchets.

Introduction

The promise of “as seen on TV” tools has always been simple: replace an entire drawer of expensive wrenches and sockets with one clever device. These universal tools claim to handle multiple fastener sizes without you needing to know the exact size first. We tested six of them to see which ones actually deliver on that promise and which ones are better left on the shelf.

The lineup includes pin-style sockets, universal wrenches, a push-button locking wrench, dog bone wrenches, and adjustable ratchets. Each takes a different approach to the same problem, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Evaluation Criteria

To give these tools a fair shake, we tested them against engineering design standards for equivalent conventional tools. For sockets, that means comparing torque output against the ASME standard for a given size. For wrenches, we compared against proof torque standards for box end wrenches.

We also paid attention to how each tool engages fasteners, whether it damages hardware, and how easy it is to use in real-world conditions. Price is a factor too, since the whole appeal of these tools is getting more capability for less money than a full professional set.

Gator Grip Socket

The Gator Grip socket is the original pin-style universal socket. It works by pushing it onto a fastener, and the spring-loaded pins quickly assume the size of the bolt or nut without you ever needing to know what size it is. The US-made version costs $17.75, while a similar imported model sells for $4.79.

The pins in the socket push the drive tool fairly far off the hex you are driving, so you need a lower-profile ratchet than usual to fit the assembly. On a 12 mm hex, the US Gator Grip made 70.3 Nm, which is a lot for that size, and it was not damaged afterward. The $4.79 version on the same size made just 15.5 Nm, and the socket tilted over once biting on the fastener.

On 15 mm, the Gator Grip reached 108.8 Nm before making a popping sound and no longer adding torque. It grabbed hold of the hex firmly and was not damaged. The cheap version managed 279.96 ft-lb on 15 mm, which is frankly impressive, though the assembly became cockeyed and dropped pins during the process.

On 17 mm, the Gator Grip reached 122.7 Nm. The pins encourage the tool to lean over and become misaligned with the hex head, which works like a wobble drive extension built into a socket. After testing, it was gummed up and bent inside with some pins stuck, but it survived a good run. Adding up its torque across all three sizes gives 301.88 Nm total, which is more than any 3/8 drive socket standard.

High Coal Universal Wrench

The High Coal universal wrench costs $5 and claims to work on 8 to 22 mm sizes plus SAE sizes from 5/16 to 7/8, all in one wrench. The manufacturer states it uses 60 HRC hardness material, which implies a fairly high alloy content.

The 13 mm side of this wrench does not actually fit a 13 mm hex. The tool seems to make its own recommendations, suggesting you use the 10 mm side instead. On 10 mm, it reached 11.7 Nm by hand, and up to 16 Nm when stripped out manually. It only contacts the corners of the fastener, which is a different approach from conventional wrench designs.

This wrench is best treated as a budget convenience tool rather than a serious replacement for a proper wrench set. The torque numbers are far below what a conventional wrench of the same size would produce, and the sizing issues make it frustrating to use.

Bionic Wrench

The Bionic Wrench is the original design by Loggerhead Tools, created for stripped and odd-shaped fasteners. The patented design was copied by Sears around 2012, and the original inventor won the lawsuit in 2017. The action requires squeezing the tool to stay at your desired size, unlike modern water pump pliers that cinch together with one arm.

Using it by hand on a grade 5 15 mm hex, the main limitation is lever length. It made 68.4 Nm, which is solid for a tool of its size. With a turning robot assisting, it reached 105.6 Nm with no damage to the fastener or tool. With a zip tie and the robot maxing things out, it reached 225.1 Nm before shearing off one of its pins, leaving it one jaw down.

That 225 Nm figure is above the standard for a box end wrench at that size. It takes considerable strength to get anywhere near that breaking point by hand, but the tool is genuinely capable. It handles stripped and odd-shaped fasteners well, which is its intended purpose.

WorkPro Wrench

The WorkPro wrench has a push-button locking gauge design that we had not seen before. At $17, it is on the pricier end of today’s lineup, but it fits all the advertised sizes, even if they feel a little non-snug. It is more intuitive to use than expected.

The engineering design standard for proof torque on a box end 13 mm wrench is 115 Nm. The WorkPro fits that 13 mm size without issue and made up to 127.7 Nm, exceeding the standard. On 17 mm, it started to slip and cam out on the hex jaws from brute strength. The target standard for a box end wrench at that size is 267 Nm, and it is reasonable to assume you would be unlikely to hit that by hand on such a small pattern wrench.

With the turning robot, the WorkPro shot way past 267 Nm and reached 477.3 Nm before the hex dug into the tool and stopped further progress. It exceeded design standards on every size tested. At the going rate of $50 per wrench for a professional set, this one tool could easily justify a $600 price tag based on capability alone.

One access concern is that the hex fastener has to stick up halfway into the tool for it to fully engage and drive the flats. Bolts that do not stick up that far may not work with this design. But for bolt heads that do, this is an impressive tool.

Gopy Adjustable Ratchet and Arbuga Universal Socket

The last two tools take the adjustable concept further. The Gopy adjustable ratchet costs $16 and uses two opposing V-jaws mounted in a reversible ratchet. The Arbuga universal adjustable 3/8 drive socket costs $15 and has sprung teeth inside that clamp down like a bionic wrench in socket form.

The Gopy ratchet needs to be placed on top of the hardware to get it to its size, similar to a crescent wrench. Knowing the bolt size does not help you preset the jaw opening, and there are no size markings to guide adjustment. You have to tighten it on the hardware, which can be a skill-building exercise in tight spaces. During testing, the adjustment froze up, making it permanently one size after adjusting it two sizes. It made 89.5 Nm before the hardware started turning in the jaws and got stuck. The jaws developed non-slip cuts and grooves for extra bite on future use.

The Arbuga socket works by rotating the collar until it grips the size of hex you want. Unlike a wrench, you can adjust it tight enough that it holds onto the fastener. It reached around 222 Nm before making suspicious sounds, then failed completely when thrown into reverse. It is not something you can put back together and use again.

These adjustable tools do not just work on the advertised 8 to 19 mm range. They also handle SAE sizes, half sizes, quarter sizes, and 9/10 sizes that preset tools miss. The value per use case is remarkably high, even if the durability is questionable.

Overall Buying Advice

If you want the most capable all-in-one tool from this group, the WorkPro wrench is the standout. It exceeded engineering standards on every size tested and offers genuine professional-level torque in a compact package. The main caveat is the access requirement: the fastener needs to stick up far enough for the tool to engage fully.

The Gator Grip socket is a solid choice for anyone who frequently encounters unknown fastener sizes. The US-made version performed well across multiple sizes and survived its testing run. The cheap imported version is a gamble that may not hold up under real use.

The Bionic Wrench is the best option for stripped and odd-shaped fasteners. It is not the strongest tool here, but it handles the situations it was designed for better than anything else. The WorkPro and the adjustable tools are more versatile for general use.

The High Coal universal wrench is hard to recommend. The sizing issues and low torque output make it more of a novelty than a practical tool. The Gopy adjustable ratchet and Arbuga socket show promise but have durability concerns that make them risky for regular use.

Conclusion

Universal wrenches and sockets have come a long way from their infomercial roots. The best of these tools genuinely replace multiple conventional tools and handle fasteners you might not have the right size for. The WorkPro wrench and the US-made Gator Grip socket are the most impressive performers here, offering real capability at a fraction of the cost of a full professional set.

The cheaper options are more of a mixed bag. Some work surprisingly well for the price, while others fail quickly or struggle with basic sizing. If you are considering one of these tools, focus on the ones that exceeded their design standards in testing and think carefully about whether the convenience of a universal tool outweighs the durability of a conventional wrench or socket.
