Ulsa Tools Cold Shrink Handles: A No-Heat Way to Restore Old Tool Grips
Ulsa Tools' cold shrink handle wraps let you re-grip shovels, hammers, and worn tools without any heat. Here is how they install and how they hold up.
Introduction
Tool handles take a beating. Wood splits, poly surfaces turn slippery, and a perfectly good tool ends up benched because the grip is the only thing wrong with it. Ulsa Tools, a company already known for its heat shrink handle wraps, now offers a different approach: cold shrink handles that install with no heat at all.
After fitting them onto three different tools, we came away impressed by how simple the concept is and how well it works.
What Cold Shrink Handles Are
Each handle is a heavy plastic tube, pre-wrapped with a rubberized, grippy, chemical-resistant handle material. The wrap is held extremely tight by the coil of hard white plastic underneath it. When you remove that plastic, the rubber grip cinches down onto whatever you have slid it over.
They come in four colors: blue, green, black, and red, and sell for a little under 15 dollars a piece. The size range covers handles from about 15 mm to 40 mm, roughly half an inch to an inch and a half in diameter, so they fit a wide variety of tool handles.

How Installation Works
The process is refreshingly low-tech. Look inside the tube and you will find an arrow marking the pull tab. Slide the tube over the tool handle, grip the exposed plastic, and pull. As the white coil unwinds, the rubber grip compresses down around the handle and locks in place.
You can line up the edge of the grip exactly where you want it before pulling, which is handy when you want to cover a specific damaged area or fold the material around a sharp edge. One useful discovery along the way: if you do not pull it far enough, the grip can still be slid up the handle and restarted, which gives you a second chance at alignment. Pull it too far, though, and there is no undoing it.

Testing on Three Worn Tools
The first test was a weathered Japanese elephant steel shovel whose handle had been chewed up by a puppy years ago. The blue grip went on smoothly and cinched down with a satisfying snap. Once started, it tightened quickly, and the result looked and felt like a factory grip.
The second was a vintage Woodings Verona sledgehammer, American-made, with a small head on a long handle. The original handle was starting to split, and since these hammers are now considered vintage, protecting the original wood made sense. Red was chosen for this one. The split area required a little more care, positioning the grip to fold around the sharp edge, and a bit of gentle assistance helped the grip wheel around the wider section, but the finished fit was excellent.

The final test was a heavy poly hammer from Canada. When cold, its original surface becomes noticeably slippery, so a black grip was fitted to pair with the orange body for a black and orange theme. This one went on without drama and transformed the feel of the tool.
One tip learned the hard way: pull too enthusiastically on a narrow handle and the grip can stretch further than intended, so it is worth being deliberate with alignment before committing.
Final Impressions
Everything tested came out better than where it started. The grips are tight, grippy, and chemical resistant, and they give worn or awkward tools a new lease on life without any heat, glue, or special equipment.

It would be fun to see smaller sizes for things like ratchet handles, but as it stands, this is a neat, well-executed idea that does exactly what it promises. For anyone with tools worth saving, these are easy to recommend.
Conclusion
Ulsa Tools’ cold shrink handles solve a real workshop problem with an elegant, no-heat design. At a little under 15 dollars each, they are an affordable way to rescue a chewed shovel, protect a vintage hammer handle, or simply make a slippery tool comfortable again. If your tool box has a handle worth fixing, this is an easy upgrade.
