Tortuga Expandable Travel Backpack Review: One Bag That Grows With Your Trip
A clamshell, carry-on friendly travel backpack that expands from 27L to 32.5L, with a comfortable harness and premium materials.
Introduction
Tortuga has been steadily building out its travel backpack lineup, and the Expandable Travel Backpack is the newest and smallest entry. It takes the same simple, minimalist formula as the Tortuga Travel Backpack Light and shrinks it down, starting at 27 liters and opening up to 32.5 liters with an expansion zipper. If you have followed Tortuga’s older bags, this one sits roughly where the Setout Divide did, just with updated features and a refreshed design.
This review focuses on the Expandable, how it packs, how it carries, and where it fits in the lineup.
Who This Bag Is For
The Expandable is designed first and foremost around a large, easy-to-pack suitcase-style main compartment and a comfortable carry system. Everything else is built around that core. It suits one-bag travelers who want a single carry-on compatible bag for weekends and longer trips without committing to a bulky 40L pack.

At 27L unexpanded, it is easily carry-on size, and on some less strict airlines you could probably get away with it as a personal item if you do not pack it too full. It is worth noting it likely will not fit a strict 18 x 14 x 8 sizer box, though it comes extremely close.
Capacity and the Expansion Zipper
Capacity claims on soft-sided bags are often optimistic, so the real-world measurement matters. Tortuga has historically been fairly accurate, and the Expandable holds up well. The unexpanded mode measured roughly 30 liters when packed fully, which tracks closely with the claimed 27L given slight overpacking, and the main compartment alone is around 20 to 21 liters.
The expansion zipper adds a claimed 5.5 liters, and that extra volume fit without any problem, bringing the bag right on point with the stated 32.5L maximum. One caveat: unexpanded and without the compression straps connected, the bag sits around 8.5 to 9 inches deep, closer to 10 inches once expanded, slightly deeper than the listed dimensions.
The expansion zipper also works in reverse like a compression cube. With the compression straps on, the full 32.5L capacity can be squeezed back into the unexpanded shape, though the bag will bulge at the top. The lesson with any soft-sided bag is to be careful when packing, because it is very easy to overstuff it.
Materials, Craftsmanship and Durability
Tortuga uses a durable but lightweight recycled 630D Cordura nylon here. Its tight weave gives it durability close to much thicker fabrics while keeping weight down, with a slightly stiffer feel than heavier ballistic weaves, and it is very similar in character to what Air uses in its prop pack line.

The hardware is top-notch as usual: YKK zippers, with size eight locking zippers on the main and laptop compartments and custom zipper pulls. The double-locking design on those compartments is a nice low-key security touch that works well with a small travel lock.
External Features and Pockets
The front of the bag carries two pockets for smaller gear. The top slash pocket includes a key leash and holds a small pouch comfortably, while the lower front pocket is thin but fairly large and can swallow a full accessory pouch. Keep in mind both pockets share volume with the bag interior: if the inside is packed very full, the contents press up into these pockets and compete for space.
The external water bottle pocket uses flat, thin, stretchy mesh and handles more than just bottles. Slimmer bottles and small pouches work well, and a compression strap loops over the top to keep tall items from falling out. A one-liter Nalgene fits, though it is close to maximum capacity.
Two compression straps on each side do a good job squishing the bag down to fit overhead dimensions. The dedicated laptop compartment sits behind the back padding, with good padding front and back, a fuzzy lining, and a large false bottom that keeps a laptop several inches off the ground. The main thing to watch: there is no liner on the sides, so avoid setting the bag down sideways in briefcase mode with a laptop inside.
The Carry System
Comfortable carry is one of Tortuga’s signature strengths, and the Expandable inherits the setup from the Travel Backpack Light. It has thick, comfortable shoulder straps with breathable mesh backing, big soft back padding with good air ventilation, and plenty of adjustability: top load adjusters to pull the bag close to your back, a buckle-adjustable sternum strap, and an attachable and detachable hip belt that connects to loops in the bottom corners.

On real trips, including several weekend outings and one longer trip with the bag alternated against another carry, it proved comfortable enough fully loaded. The hip belt is optional at the unexpanded 27L size, but for a heavy laptop, more gear, or expanded 32.5L loads, clipping it on is the smarter move.
Interior Organization and Packing
The bag’s superpower is the full clamshell zipper that opens the entire main container like a suitcase: one large, easy-to-pack side, and a lid side that acts as a built-in packing cube with its own volume. The large zipper pocket on the lid is a smart design choice, letting you use the full lid-side capacity rather than a small capped pocket.

Tortuga’s own compression cubes are the best fit; two of them fill the main compartment almost exactly. Third-party cubes work too, with trade-offs: an Eagle Creek medium expansion cube fits but presses slightly against the bag’s exterior, while Peak Design cubes are a bit smaller and leave a gap at the side. In the lid side, keep things light and bulky, such as jackets, lighter sandals, and a small hip pack, since heavy items there will throw off the weight distribution.
Fully packed in unexpanded mode with all that gear, the bag came in at a moderate 6.2 kg (13.6 lb). The best strategy is to start every trip unexpanded so the expansion zipper stays in reserve for souvenirs, a heavier jacket, or anything picked up along the way.
How It Compares in the Tortuga Lineup
If you need more organization for tech gear, cameras, or a heavier laptop, the Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro is the larger sibling at 40L, with a gigantic front compartment full of pockets and dividers, thicker back padding, an adjustable and stowable harness system, waterproof fabric, and a hidden luggage pass-through sleeve between the laptop compartment and back padding for pairing with rolling luggage.
If you want the same 40L capacity with less weight and a slimmer profile, the Tortuga Travel Backpack Light strips things down: much lighter, but with less organization. The Expandable is the smallest and most minimalist of the three, built around that big main container with the versatility of the expansion zipper.
Buying Advice and Verdict
In summary, the Expandable is another strong design from Tortuga. It maximizes interior volume in a large, easy-to-pack main compartment, and the carry system is genuinely excellent: thick padded shoulder straps, top load adjusters, an optional hip belt, and plenty of ventilation. Honestly, it is hard to come up with real cons. The price may feel a little steep, but it is justified by a very high-quality bag with features that make it work well for travel. If there is one nitpick, the design looks fairly basic, and some fresh colorways or fabrics would be welcome.
At launch, Tortuga is offering a 20% off coupon code for a limited window, which makes it a good moment to pick one up if the size fits your travel style. For one-bag travelers who want a compact, carry-on friendly pack with room to grow, the Expandable is easy to recommend.
Conclusion
The Tortuga Expandable Travel Backpack does one thing very well: it gives you a comfortable, well-built suitcase-style bag at a carry-on friendly size, with an expansion zipper that adds flexibility exactly when a trip calls for it. Start packed light, expand when needed, and it covers most one-bag trips with ease.
