Tingly Ted's vs the Classics: Which Hot Sauce Deserves a Spot on Your Table?

We taste test both Tingly Ted's sauces from Ed Sheeran against Frank's Original, Cholula, and Sauce Shop Buffalo to see how the celebrity condiment stacks up.

Five assorted hot sauce bottles arranged on a concrete surface

Introduction

Ed Sheeran’s Tingly Ted’s has been one of the most requested celebrity condiments to test, and the premise is simple: a self-described massive fan of Heinz ketchup wanted to create the ketchup of hot sauces. Something fruity, spiced, and delicious, made to go on everything. The range comes in two versions, Original and Extra Tingly, made in collaboration with Heinz with no artificial flavours or preservatives.

To see how they stack up, we put both bottles head to head with three well-established classics: Frank’s Original, Cholula, and Sauce Shop’s Buffalo Hot Sauce. Every sauce was tested straight from the bottle and tossed through a generous pile of chicken wings, which remains the fairest hot sauce test there is.

Tingly Ted’s Original Hot Sauce

The Original is described as having fresh lemon notes and a smoky flavour that let the red jalapeno and capsicum chillies sing, along with a mix of herbs and spices. It contains 16% jalapeno and sits at two chillies out of four on the brand’s own heat scale.

Straight from the bottle, the first impressions are citrus and fruit, with only a mild afterthought of spice. Once tossed through warm chicken wings, it becomes even more clearly a fruity, smoky sauce than a spicy one, with a lovely rounded flavour that several tasters described as simply delicious. If you like the idea of hot sauce but don’t want something that gives you the shivers, this is squarely aimed at you.

It is worth saying upfront that calling this a hot sauce is slightly misleading. It is sweet, fruity, and only a little warm, closer to a mango ketchup or a premium sweet chilli condiment than a Frank’s or Cholula. That is not a criticism. As an all-round dipping sauce and everyday condiment, it genuinely goes with everything, and it could easily be a gateway into hotter sauces for people who usually avoid them.

Tingly Ted’s Extra Tingly Hot Sauce

The Extra Tingly steps things up with 39% jalapeno, more than twice the chilli content of the Original. It is a deeper red, has more viscosity, and visible flecks of chilli are immediately apparent.

The initial hit suggests it might explode into serious heat, but it mellows out very quickly, making it a remarkably accessible hot sauce even for cautious spice fans. Compared directly with the classics, it is still sweeter than all of them, and the spice that does arrive dissipates fast. It sits somewhere between a smoky hot sauce and a sweet chilli sauce: not as sweet as the latter, not as smoky and spicy as the former, but right in the middle if you like both profiles.

For tasters who already own plenty of genuinely spicy sauces, the Original was the more interesting addition to the collection, precisely because it does something different from ketchup and standard condiments. But if you want a bit of warmth with your sweetness, the Extra Tingly is the better-balanced pick of the two.

Frank’s Original Hot Sauce

Frank’s Original is a genuine classic, made from aged cayenne red peppers, distilled vinegar, water, salt, and garlic powder. Because it starts from cayenne rather than jalapeno, it begins higher up the heat scale than the Tingly Ted’s sauces.

On wings it comes across as thicker than Cholula but not as thick as the Buffalo sauce, still coating well. The flavour is really tangy with a lovely kick, and there is a dry, peppery spice layered on top of that tang. It is a sauce with a lot going on, and it is excellent for adding to dishes and elevating them. In the final spice ranking, Frank’s came out on top as the hottest of the five.

Cholula Hot Sauce

Cholula is made from mashed chilli peppers blended with vinegar and spices, then filtered and bottled. It is the sauce you see on half the diner tables in America, and its familiarity is part of its appeal.

Tasted on wings, it is instantly more acidic, in a good way, with a citrus acidity running through a profile of spiciness and brightness. It is not as thick as the others but still coats the chicken really well, and it reads as spicier than the Tingly Ted’s sauces, partly because there is no creamy fattiness to take the edge off. In the spice order it landed second hottest, just behind Frank’s. It is incredibly familiar in the best sense: you know exactly what you are getting, and what you are getting is good.

Sauce Shop Buffalo Hot Sauce

The UK’s Sauce Shop makes their Buffalo sauce with aged jalapeno, which puts it closer in character to the Tingly Ted’s range than the cayenne-based American classics. Their signature jalapeno mash uses perfectly ripened peppers that are salted and aged for two to four weeks to accentuate the fruity flavours. It is made in small batches in Nottinghamshire with all-natural ingredients and nothing artificial, and it won a three-star Great Taste award in 2023.

On wings, the Buffalo version looks instantly appealing with its orange glaze, and it is noticeably fattier and more emulsified than the others, giving it a rich, creamy mouth feel. The official description of spicy, tangy, and salty with a slight creaminess holds up. Buffalo sauce and chicken wings remain a perfect duet, and this is a fantastic example.

How They Compare: The Final Verdict

Lined up in order of spice, the ranking came out as follows: Tingly Ted’s Original mildest, then Sauce Shop Buffalo, then Tingly Ted’s Extra Tingly, then Cholula, and finally Frank’s Original as the hottest of the five.

That order tells the real story. The Tingly Ted’s sauces are genuinely different from the classic hot sauces, so sweet and fruity that comparing them directly to a Frank’s or a Cholula is almost unfair. The Original works as an all-rounder condiment for people who want something a step above standard table sauces, while the Extra Tingly adds real warmth without ever becoming punishing.

The three classics remain excellent at what they have always done: Frank’s for tang and elevating cooked dishes, Cholula for that familiar acidic kick, and Sauce Shop Buffalo for rich, creamy wings.

Conclusion

Tingly Ted’s mostly delivers on its creator’s ambition. The Original in particular feels like a genuine condiment rather than a novelty, sweet, fruity, and gently warm, and it is the pick for anyone who finds most hot sauces too aggressive. The Extra Tingly is the one to choose if you want that same fruity character with an accessible kick. If classic tang and heat are what you are after, Frank’s, Cholula, and Sauce Shop Buffalo all remain dependable choices, each with a distinct personality.
