4 Viral TikTok Shop Kitchen Gadgets Put to the Test: Which Ones Are Worth Buying?

We tested four of TikTok Shop's most popular kitchen gadgets, from a ceramic grater plate to an air fryer kebab rack. Here is what actually worked.

Introduction

TikTok Shop is predicted to hit 112 billion dollars in sales in 2026, up 71 percent from 2025, and a huge share of that is impulse-buy kitchen gadgets. The promise is always the same: a cheaper, faster, cleverer way to do something your kitchen already does. The reality is usually more complicated.

To separate the genuinely useful from the merely viral, four of TikTok Shop’s most popular kitchen gadgets were tested in a real kitchen by a professional chef and an ordinary home cook. Each one was used as intended, compared against the tools it claims to replace, and rated from one to five stars. The results ranged from a rare five-star standout to a couple of products that are best scrolled past.

Piranha Grater Plate: The Clear Winner

The Piranha grater plate looks like an arts-and-crafts project at first glance: a textured ceramic plate with a rough, friction-based grating surface, reminiscent of the traditional Japanese oroshigane graters and the coarse plates used for wasabi. You press the ingredient against the plate and work it in a circular motion, and fine gratings collect in the centre. This version comes with a silicone garlic peeler tube and a small brush for dislodging anything stuck in the texture.

The standout moment was grating. Garlic, ginger, and even nutmeg, described as one of the hardest spices, all grated easily, and the ceramic surface worked far better on ginger than a microplane, catching far less peel. Because it is ceramic rather than metal, there is no risk of a metallic taste with acidic ingredients. The plate is sharp enough to grate effectively but not sharp enough to cut fingers, which makes working close to the bottom of the plate completely safe. A drop of oil or water can be used as a lubricant, though it worked fine without.

At around 12 pounds, it earned an enthusiastic five stars from both testers, both of whom said they would buy one. The only real negative: the included brush started shedding hairs almost immediately.

Herb Saver: A Clever Idea That Underdelivers

The herb saver is a storage container designed to keep fresh herbs like coriander, mint, chives, and dill alive for longer by storing the stems in water, essentially a mini vase for the fridge. You water it from the cap and replace the water every three to five days.

In theory, this is exactly the kind of product that appeals to anyone trying to reduce food waste. In practice, loading it was fiddly, and the herb stalks kept refusing to stay in place. The verdict shifted from dislike to cautious approval and back to dislike during the test.

The deciding test compared three methods over four days: an unopened supermarket bag, an opened bag left in the fridge, and herbs stored in the saver. The unopened bag looked fine, the opened bag was soggy in the corners but usable, and the herb saver was disappointing, with waterlogged, grim-looking stalks at the base. It needs really long stalks to work properly, and at 4 pounds 99 it was judged expensive for what it is, especially compared to a stack of 20 basic storage containers for around 20 pounds. It also eats valuable fridge space. Ratings ranged from zero to two stars, with one tester calling it outright not worth it.

Microwave Pasta Cooker: It Works, Eventually

The microwave pasta cooker is a ribbed plastic container that lets you measure, cook, and drain pasta in one vessel, with serving markers on the side that double as water-level guides and a perforated lid for draining. The idea is not new: similar microwave pasta cookers have been viral products since the late 2000s.

The reality check came quickly. Five minutes in the microwave left the spaghetti badly undercooked, because hard pasta simply needs around ten minutes even in boiling water. After a second five-minute stint, the pasta was officially cooked, and the built-in colander lid drained it well without any burns. The catch: it did not cook faster than a hob, and it does not really save equipment, since you still effectively need a saucepan equivalent, a colander, and a heat source in the form of the microwave.

Tasters found the result a little bland and slightly undercooked. As a niche solution for dorm rooms or kitchens without a hob, it is fine, and it earns a fair two stars for doing what it says on the tin, just not better than the traditional method. At 18 pounds 73, the price felt hard to justify.

Air Fryer Kebab Rack: Fun, Fiddly, Surprisingly Tasty

The air fryer kebab rack turns your air fryer into a mini indoor grill, with a stainless steel rack and vertical skewer set designed to hold multiple skewers upright so hot air circulates evenly around meat, fish, vegetables, or halloumi. Vertical cooking keeps the food away from excess fat, prevents overcrowding, and promises more consistent browning without an outdoor barbecue.

With 65 percent of UK households now owning an air fryer, it is no surprise that accessories like this have gone viral. The version received was slightly thinner and less sturdy than the one shown in the product’s promotional video, which is worth knowing before you buy: what arrives may not match what you saw. The skewers are very thin, so keeping small cubes of marinated pork shoulder and red onion on them while loading was genuinely fiddly.

Once cooking, though, most skewers stayed in place, the colour developed nicely, and the result was genuinely delicious, with the thin metal cooling quickly enough to handle straight away. Ratings landed at four out of five, with the honest caveat that the testers could not quite work out who needs it beyond mini-kebab enthusiasts and impulsive late-night scrolling. At 4 pounds 57 it is a fun, capable oddity rather than an essential.

Overall Buying Advice

Across the four gadgets, a clear pattern emerged. The products that reinvent an old, proven idea, like the friction-based ceramic grater plate, performed brilliantly. The products that try to replace an existing method without actually improving on it, like the herb saver and the microwave pasta cooker, fell short. The kebab rack sits in between: imperfect but entertaining, and cheap enough that disappointment stings less.

If you buy only one of these, make it the grater plate. If you are curious about the kebab rack, go in knowing the skewers are thin and the loading is fiddly. The herb saver and pasta cooker are both skippable unless your situation is genuinely unusual, such as cooking pasta with no hob at all.

Conclusion

Viral does not mean useless, but it does not mean useful either. Of the four TikTok Shop gadgets tested, one earned unanimous five stars and genuine purchase intent, while the rest ranged from a fun four to a regrettable zero. The lesson: the best viral gadgets tend to be rediscoveries of old ideas, and the worst are solutions looking for a problem. Check which one you are buying before you tap checkout.
