Tactile Turn Trailhead Review: A Seasonal Slim Side Click with a Great Outdoors Theme

A titanium slim side click rollerball finished in Cerakote with a campfire, evergreen forest, and Bigfoot theme. Here is how it writes, feels, and where it fits.

Introduction

Tactile Turn’s seasonal releases have become one of the more interesting rhythms in the pen world. These are not limited editions. Instead of a fixed production run, each seasonal design is made continuously for roughly a month and then retired for good. That window model keeps the designs special without the artificial scarcity of a true limited edition, and past releases have been a clear success for the company.

The latest entry is the Trailhead, and it might be the most thematically ambitious one yet.

What the Trailhead Is

The Trailhead is part of Tactile Turn’s newer slim side click family of rollerballs. It comes in three sizes: the standard at 5.8 inches, the short at 5.3 inches, and the mini at 4.6 inches. This review covers the standard model.

While fountain pens get most of the attention around here, there are plenty of situations where a rollerball or gel pen is simply the right tool, whether clipped to a planner or sitting on the desk. The Trailhead is designed to fill that everyday role with a bit more personality than most.

Build, Coating, and Clip

The pen is a titanium body coated in Cerakote, a thin ceramic coating that, once cured, resists abrasion, chemicals, temperature, and scratches. It is not invulnerable, and wear will still show over time, but it allows Tactile Turn to add colors and textures that bare metal cannot deliver.

The barrel carries the traditional Tactile Turn groove, which adds a textural element and helps maintain a solid grip on what is a fairly thin pen. Even for someone who usually prefers thicker pens, the slim side click profile is comfortable in the hand.

The clip is where the theme really comes alive. A Bigfoot takes a stroll under evergreen trees, and the design is not printed but laser engraved, exposing the underlying titanium. Despite the amount of engraving, the clip remains smooth to the touch, which makes this a more durable way to add detail. On the underside of the clip, the Cerakote partially covers the engraving, but you can still make out the company name and the year the pen was produced. Having the pen discreetly dated is a nice touch for a seasonal release.

Colors and Theme Details

The Trailhead mixes earth tones and unique finishes to capture the great outdoors: sandy ground, a small campfire, a mysterious beast moving through an evergreen forest, and blue skies above.

The red click mechanism on the side symbolizes a burning campfire, while the knock at the top is colored to represent the bright blue sky. The knock itself is slightly smaller with more of a rounded edge than the standard side click models. Even for someone who is not the most outdoorsy person, the overall theme feels well executed, and the pops of color against the sand-toned barrel work nicely.

Refills and Writing Experience

The standard Trailhead takes a Pilot G2 0.7mm refill. The short model takes a Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 medium, and the mini takes a Pilot G2 mini 0.7 refill.

The G2 is one of the most reliable and smooth rollerball refills around, and it consistently delivers clean, consistent lines. The click mechanism extends and retracts smoothly, the kind of satisfying action that invites repeated fidgeting whenever the pen is in hand.

Buying Advice

The Trailhead is available only through the Tactile Turn website until October 30th, priced at $149 regardless of size. After that date it will not be produced again.

If you like slim click pens, titanium construction, or seasonal designs with genuine personality, the window to pick one up is short. If you already own a previous seasonal release such as the Fairway, Stealth, Nautilus, or GT, the Trailhead’s mixed finishes and engraved clip make it a noticeably different addition to the lineup. Anyone who prefers thicker pens should still try the slim side click format before committing, though many find it more comfortable than the dimensions suggest.

Conclusion

The Trailhead is a strong addition to the seasonal lineup. The Cerakote finish, durable laser engraving, clever campfire and sky color cues, and smooth G2 writing experience come together into a pen that feels thoughtfully designed rather than merely decorated. It will be interesting to see what the next seasonal release brings in another three months.
