Stihl RZ 760i Review: A Confident First Commercial Zero Turn Mower

Stihl's first commercial-grade zero turn mower pairs a 28 hp Vanguard engine with coilover suspension and a notably comfortable ride.

Introduction

A new zero turn mower arriving at the shop is always an event, and this one carried extra weight: the Stihl RZ 760i is Stihl’s first commercial-grade zero turn mower. We put it to work reclaiming a neighbor’s badly overgrown property, well outside peak mowing season, and it left a strong impression from the first pass.

Engine and Performance Specs

At its heart, the RZ 760i runs a beefy Vanguard 28 horsepower, 810cc engine. Top speed is 10 mph in forward and 5 mph in reverse. The controls are very smooth, with virtually no play in the lap bars, which makes it easy to maneuver around obstacles and landscaping.

Stihl offers Oil Guard technology on the Vanguard 810cc model. The oil is stored away from the engine sump, protecting it from thermal breakdown, and the 5-quart oil reservoir sits right behind the seat where it can air cool and dissipate heat more easily. That extended maintenance schedule is a genuine contributor to the mower’s overall value.

Cut Quality and Raw Power

We set the deck height to 3.5 inches and started on a mix of Bahia and St. Augustine grass. Ordinarily, with heavy overgrowth, we would cut the yard twice so the mower would not bog down. The RZ 760i handled the tall grass like a champ, needing no such second pass on most of the property.

The biggest surprise was the sheer power on tap. Even at full speed, the mower held its RPMs and cut quality, leaving a clean, even cut with very few stickups. We did slow down a few times in the thickest patches, but overall it performed like the commercial-grade machine it claims to be.

Deck and Fuel Capacity

The sturdy 60-inch fabricated steel deck and 11-gallon fuel capacity make this mower well suited to professional crews working across a variety of landscapes. Deck lift is foot operated, and with deck sizes up to 60 inches many pros prefer the simplicity of a manual system over a hydraulic one. The pedal sets cut height between 1.5 and 5 inches in quarter-inch increments.

Comfort and Suspension

Stihl clearly did not sacrifice comfort for power. The plush high-back seat with two folding armrests wraps around your torso and holds you in place while mowing. The seat adjusts forward and backward, and thanks to the soft suspension there is no need for an additional seat tensioner. Two built-in cup holders, one sized for a larger tumbler, plus two 3-amp USB ports round out the cockpit.

A big part of the comfort comes from the premium adjustable front and rear coilover shocks. The result is a cutting deck that floats almost independently of the mower, producing a more consistent cut height, especially over bumps and uneven terrain.

The ride quality is genuinely smooth, even at top speed. During testing we regularly mowed between 7 and 10 mph, and where we would normally ease off approaching uneven ground, that was simply not necessary with the RZ 760i.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The RZ 760i retails for $13,999, which places it firmly in the professional tier. The Vanguard Oil Guard system extends the maintenance schedule, but you should still factor in commercial-grade servicing costs. It is also a large machine with a 60-inch deck, so properties with tight gates or intricate landscaping may want a smaller deck option.

Who Should Buy the Stihl RZ 760i

This mower is ideal for professional crews and serious landowners who want confident cutting power, a comfortable ride, and less time on maintenance. The smooth ride, unique suspension, and strong cut quality allowed us to tackle an extremely overgrown lawn and leave a spectacular result behind.

Conclusion

With comfort and cut quality high on our priority list, the Stihl RZ 760i earns a very enthusiastic thumbs up. Backed by a limited warranty of 3 years or 500 hours, whichever comes first, it makes an easy case as Stihl’s first serious entry into the commercial zero turn market.
