Speak Easy Leather Draper Wallet: A Top-Flap Take on a Modern Classic

Handmade in Cleveland from Italian vegetable-tanned leather, the Draper blends the Dillinger design with a top flap. Here is how it compares and which version to pick.

Introduction

The Draper wallet from Speak Easy Leather is one of those designs that makes sense the moment you understand where it came from. It was born from a simple request: a Dillinger-style wallet with a flap that comes over the top instead of from the side. The result is a compact, handmade leather wallet that keeps everything people like about the Dillinger while changing how you reach your cash when the wallet is closed.

What Exactly Is the Draper?

To make the Draper, Speak Easy Leather combined the Dillinger wallet with the Crowley, a wallet that has a flap coming over the top. Everything else about the Draper takes after the Dillinger: the same internal pockets, the same cash compartment, the same overall layout. The main difference is the flap location, and that one change shifts how you access your cards and bills.

The build quality leaves little room for doubt. The wallets are handmade in Cleveland, Ohio from full grain vegetable-tanned Buttero Carlo Italian leather, with fully hand-stitched saddle stitching and burnished, polished edges. Buttero Carlo is widely regarded as one of the best tanneries in the world, and the craftsmanship on display here is flawless.

Draper Versions and Features

The Draper comes in four versions:

  • Draper Classic: two internal pockets, no extra pockets
  • Draper Classic Deluxe: adds a quick access card pocket on the back
  • Draper CC: adds a concealed carry pocket on the inside
  • Draper CC Deluxe: combines both extra pockets

The two internal pockets hold up to eight credit cards and roughly 20 to 25 bills folded in half. The concealed carry pocket can hold an Apple AirTag, a challenge coin, or spare keys.

Measured with nothing inside, the Deluxe version comes in at 0.42 inches thick, while the CC version measures 0.50 inches. Both weigh 2 ounces, or 58 grams. Closed dimensions are 2.88 inches long by 4.08 inches high.

Customization is a big part of the appeal. You can choose the leather color and thread color, the snap color, the front logo style, and even the leather color of the CC pocket or the quick access card pocket on Deluxe versions.

Draper vs Dillinger: How They Compare

If you already know the Dillinger, the Draper will feel instantly familiar. Side by side, the internal layout is nearly identical: a main compartment for the bulk of your cards, a cash compartment in the back, and on the Deluxe version, a quick access card pocket on the back that is almost the same as the Dillinger’s.

The flap location changes daily use in a subtle but real way. With the Dillinger’s side flap, you can squeeze the wallet and pluck cards or bills straight out of the top. With the Draper’s top flap, the cards are not accessible when closed, but the bills are: you can pull cash directly out from the side without opening the flap at all.

Two smaller differences are worth noting. Like the Dillinger CC, the Draper CC uses hidden barrel snaps, while non-CC versions show exposed snaps on the front. And the Dillinger has a small stitch between the two internal pockets that acts as a pinch point; the Draper omits it, likely because of the top-flap design.

Everyday Carrying and Cash Access

Loaded with 20 bills folded in half and eight credit cards, roughly the maximum this wallet can carry, the Draper still handles the load well on a brand-new, not-yet-worn-in wallet. Leather stretches over time, so daily carrying will loosen the pockets to fit what you actually keep inside.

The quick access card pocket on the Deluxe version has an aggressive cut that makes it easy to fan out and grab the card you need. And the side access to bills is the standout convenience: snap the wallet shut, give it a squeeze, and pluck out your cash without ever opening the flap.

Which Version Should You Buy?

If you do not need extras, the Draper Classic is the thinnest and simplest choice. If you want faster card access, go Deluxe. If you want to tuck away an AirTag or spare keys, the CC version is the one to pick, and the CC Deluxe gives you both. Anyone already comfortable with the Dillinger will feel right at home here, since the functionality is essentially the same apart from the flap.

Conclusion

The Draper is exactly what a thoughtful design evolution should be: a wallet people already trust, with one well-executed change that makes cash access easier while the wallet stays closed. With top-tier Italian leather, flawless hand stitching, and deep customization options, it is an easy recommendation for anyone who values handmade quality in a compact everyday wallet.
