Skil Power Core 20 Sub-Compact Tools: Four New Compact Cordless Picks

Skil expands its Power Core 20 lineup with four sub-compact brushless tools, plus fast jump charging and batteries that double as power banks.

Introduction

Skil has announced a wave of new sub-compact offerings across its Power Core 20 cordless platform, and the headline promise is simple: the same performance as previous generations in packages that are 17 percent smaller. The company says the compact series delivers great power and torque, more compact bodies, optimized and responsive controls, and packs in brushless motors with new compact gearboxes.

The lineup covered here includes a sub-compact hammer drill, a quarter-inch hex impact driver, a three-eighths-inch impact wrench with hog ring, and a compact four-and-a-half-inch circular saw. All four share the same battery platform, which is where some of the most interesting features live. Here is how each tool stacks up.

Battery and Charging: The Standout Platform Features

Before the individual tools, the platform features deserve attention. Skil says its battery packs wrap each cell with cooling material to keep the battery running 25 percent longer and extend battery life by two times. The kits also include Power Jump charging, which boosts a depleted battery from 0 to 25 percent in five minutes, enough power to drive up to a hundred screws. The scenario it solves is familiar: it is the end of a long day, your battery dies, and you only need one or two more screws or one last cut. Five minutes on the jump charger gets you there instead of waiting hours for a full charge.

Two more platform touches are easy to overlook. The jump charger includes fan cooling, which keeps both the charger and the batteries cooler over time and helps with long-term battery life. And each two amp hour battery has a built-in USB Type-A port, so the batteries can charge phones and tablets directly. That removes the need for a separate power bank, and if you use the batteries to top up devices regularly, they stay conditioned and ready for tool use as well.

Skil Power Core 20 Sub-Compact Hammer Drill

The sub-compact hammer drill offers hammer function, drill function, and multiple clutch settings for precise screw placement. It runs a two-speed gearbox with an infinitely variable trigger and an LED light with both pre-light and after-glow. Skil claims it is one inch shorter than the previous generation.

On paper, the digital brushless motor, half-inch single sleeve keyless ratcheting chuck, 17-stage torque adjustment, and hammer function delivering 27,000 impacts per minute make this a genuinely versatile compact drill. The LED work light can illuminate the whole workspace for up to 10 minutes. MSRP is listed at $129.99, with availability from October 4, 2022.

Skil 20V Brushless 1/4” Hex Compact Impact Driver

The quarter-inch hex impact driver features the Halo light, which Skil says puts out five times more light than common LEDs and reduces shadows. It has three speed settings plus a control mode designed to help eliminate screw cam-out and cross-threading, and a quick-insert, quick-eject collet for one-handed bit changes. The digital brushless motor is aimed at high performance and extended tool life.

The Halo light has two modes: a 10-second mode that keeps it illuminated briefly after the trigger is released, or a 10-minute mode. That makes it a practical substitute for a separate flashlight if you are working up inside a ceiling, down in a crawl space, or in a dark cabinet where the driver is closer to hand than a lamp.

Skil 20V Brushless 3/8” Impact Wrench with Hog Ring

The new impact wrench is one inch shorter than the previous generation and carries some serious torque figures for its size: 170 foot-pounds of max fastening torque and 220 foot-pounds of nut-busting torque. No-load speeds run from 1,500 RPM in speed one, to 2,250 in speed two, up to 2,850 RPM in speed three, with impact rates of 2,100, 3,400, and 3,950 impacts per minute respectively.

The hog ring anvil makes socket changes quick, and the Halo light carries over with the same two-mode functionality as the impact driver. Priced at $129.99, it becomes available in October.

Skil 20V Brushless 4-1/2” Compact Circular Saw

This is the most distinctive looking tool of the group, and notably well balanced: it does not fall back on its battery. Skil says it cuts a 2x4 in one pass and is aimed at big power in a compact design for overhead work or hard-to-reach areas. It is also 38 percent lighter for easy maneuverability compared with Skil’s CR5413-1A.

Safety and convenience details are strong for the class. There is a rapid-stopping blade brake, a front light to illuminate the cut line, and an integrated dust port on top of the shroud to help keep airborne particulate out of the air. Maximum cut depth is 1.5 inches at 90 degrees and 1 inch at 45 degrees, and the saw comes with an edge guide, an accessory that is uncommon at this price point.

Overall Buying Advice

These four tools make sense as a set if you value compact handling without giving up performance. The hammer drill and impact driver cover everyday driving and drilling with useful precision features, the impact wrench adds genuine nut-busting torque in a shorter body, and the compact circular saw is the most specialized pick for overhead or tight-space cutting. Because they share the Power Core 20 batteries with Power Jump charging and USB output, buying any two of them together is where the platform starts paying off.

Conclusion

Skil’s new sub-compact lineup looks promising on paper: 17 percent smaller bodies, brushless motors, thoughtful lighting, and battery features you rarely see at this price. The compact circular saw with its edge guide and dust port, and the impact driver’s Halo light, stand out as particularly well considered. If you are building a compact cordless kit, this generation is worth a close look.
