Skil Power Core 20 Rear Handle Circular Saw Review: Big Power, Fair Price

A 20V x 2 brushless rear handle circular saw with dual batteries, built-in dust extraction, and smooth cutting that punches well above its price point.

Introduction

Rear handle circular saws have a loyal following for good reason: the extra weight and handle position help keep cuts flat, smooth, and easier to track. Skil’s newest entry in this category, the Power Core 20 20V Brushless 7-1/4” Rear Handle Circular Saw, aims to bring that cutting feel to a price range where rear handle saws are usually rare. After running it through treated timbers, deep rips, and repeated plunge cuts, it held up remarkably well.

Who This Saw Is For

This saw suits DIYers and pro-sumers who want the smoother, more controlled cutting experience of a rear handle design without paying flagship prices. If you rip long boards regularly or value a clearer line of sight down the cut, the rear handle layout works in your favor. The blade sits on the left, which many right-handed users prefer because it keeps the cut line visible without leaning over the tool.

It runs on two 20V batteries simultaneously, effectively delivering 40V of power, and ships with two batteries, a dual charger, the saw, and a blade wrench. Both batteries need to be installed for it to run; it does not drain one and then switch to the other.

Main Strengths

The most impressive feature is the dust extraction built directly into the handle. You can adjust the port to face up, down, or away from you, and hook up a vacuum, with excess dust shooting out the side. It keeps dust out of your face and, during heavy cutting, the saw never clogged despite an enormous amount of sawdust. Very few saws at any price offer integrated dust collection like this.

The blade guard also deserves praise. It rides right over the top of the wood without snagging or getting held up, staying flawless through dozens of cuts. In testing, the saw sliced through pressure-treated 6x6 lumber with no pilot holes, both with full rips and plunge cuts, with no bogging down, using only the stock out-of-the-box blade.

Battery life was another standout. After five full-length rips, ten cross cuts, and several plunge cuts through dense treated timber, both battery packs still showed three bars each. For a saw pulling from two batteries at once, that endurance is genuinely surprising.

Up front, an LED light helps illuminate the cut area, and the build quality feels solid for the price range. The rear handle’s added weight, rather than being a drawback, helps control the cut and keeps it flatter and smoother than typical sidewinder saws.

Things to Consider Before Buying

There are only two real downsides worth noting. First, the notches on the shoe are hard to see. Aside from the numbers, there is no color coding to make them stand out, so they blend in. Second, the bevel adjustment is a bit stiffer than ideal. Adjustments are not difficult overall, but that stiffness slows things down slightly.

On the bevel scale, the saw stops automatically at 45 degrees, and a button releases it to swing out to 53 degrees for steeper cuts. The 45-degree cuts themselves came out very smooth. Blade-on-the-left orientation is a preference point: some users love the line of sight, while others prefer looking over the saw, so consider which style you lean toward.

Buying Advice

Priced around $240 to $250 with two batteries and a dual charger included, this is a strong value for a 7-1/4” rear handle saw. That kit configuration is hard to match in this segment, especially with brushless motor performance and integrated dust extraction included. Use the stock blade first, as it performs well out of the box; there is plenty of headroom if you later upgrade to a premium blade.

If you already own other Skil 20V tools, the shared battery platform makes this an easy addition. If you are new to rear handle saws and want to try the format without a premium investment, this is one of the most accessible ways to do it.

Conclusion

The Skil Power Core 20 Rear Handle Circular Saw delivers smooth, powerful cutting, impressive battery endurance, and a genuinely useful built-in dust extractor, all at a price that undercuts much of the rear handle market. The hard-to-read shoe notches and slightly stiff bevel are minor complaints against an otherwise well-built kit. For most DIYers and demanding homeowners, it is an easy recommendation.
