Introduction

The Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H brings the power of a corded vacuum into a cordless stick format, with the added ability to pivot its middle section so you can clean under furniture without bending down. This model features Clean Sense IQ, which automatically adjusts suction power based on the debris and surface the vacuum is currently working on. The brush head also includes design features aimed at delivering exceptional hair cleaning performance.

Who This Vacuum Is For

The Shark Stratos Cordless is a strong fit for households that want cordless convenience without giving up suction power. It is particularly well suited for pet owners, given its outstanding performance in hair pickup tests. It also appeals to anyone who finds bending down to clean under furniture uncomfortable, thanks to the pivoting wand design.

Cleaning Performance

The Stratos Cordless was tested across 21 different tests covering eight critical performance categories. Cleaning tests measured how well the vacuum handled four different debris types on three different floor types, using maximum suction power with one forward and one backward pass per debris type.

Shark claims this model has the highest suction power of any cordless model they make, and that power was certainly felt during testing. The vacuum achieved a 96.66 percent overall performance score, compared to the average of 91.2 percent across all vacuum tests. It performed best on hardwood floors, feeling virtually perfect with sugar, kitty litter, and rice. The only observed issue was a small amount of debris shooting out of the sides due to the high airflow, most noticeably with cereal, which had 96.6 percent collected in the test. With more and wider passes, this would not be a problem in real-world use.

On low pile carpet and high pile carpet, the larger debris types were entirely sucked up, but smaller debris types seemed to stay in the testing lane. The smallest type, sugar, was observed making its way on top of the brush roll. This result was consistent across multiple re-runs. On high pile carpet, the two smaller debris types scored 90.8 and 90.4 percent respectively, while larger debris types left behind nothing.

Hair Pickup Performance

For the hair test, one gram of high-contrast blue strands of hair was placed on a hardwood floor lane. After a single pass on the highest setting, 100 percent of the blue hair was removed from the testing lane. The entire amount was collected in a single cohesive spiral in the dust bin, and the brush roll showed no signs of tangling. This is exceptional performance, as most brush heads see at least some hair wrapped in the roll or caught in the corners.

The pet hair test produced similar results. One gram of pet fur was placed on a high pile carpet testing lane, and the vacuum again demonstrated perfect performance with 100 percent collection and zero evidence of tangling. For households with pets that shed a lot, the Shark Stratos could be a great choice.

Battery Runtime and Suction Power

Runtime testing involved fully charging the battery and running the vacuum on each power mode until the battery ran out. The three modes include Clean Sense IQ mode, which changes based on debris and terrain detected, plus Eco and Max modes.

The results showed a wide range of runtimes. On the lowest setting, Eco mode, the vacuum lasted nearly 1 hour and 19 minutes, which is truly impressive. On the other end, Boost mode lasted just under 14 minutes. While that powerful suction can only be sustained for so long on a battery, 14 minutes is quite long compared to most other cordless vacuums on max power. Using the auto mode, also known as Clean Sense IQ, would likely produce a runtime somewhere between these two extremes.

Wind speed was measured using an anemometer placed level next to the extension tube. The cordless Stratos recorded a maximum wind speed of 19.5 miles per hour on its highest suction setting. This actually outperforms the recorded wind speed of the corded Shark Stratos model, which measured 17.7 miles per hour. This confirms Shark’s claim that this is their most powerful cordless vacuum yet.

Sealed System and Noise Levels

The sealed system test determines how well the entire vacuum system keeps dust and debris inside. A fog machine was set up with the output nozzle facing directly toward the vacuum’s extension wand, and short bursts of smoke were released into the vacuum while running on the highest suction mode.

Like other Stratos models, the cordless version was found to be completely sealed. The only hint of smoke showed briefly out of the exhaust end, with no other parts or connection joints letting smoke through. This means the vacuum should not spread dust and debris around your home during operation.

Noise testing was conducted on high pile carpet in each power mode using a sound meter. This is definitely a loud vacuum, ranging from 67.2 to 75.8 decibels. Even at its lowest setting, holding a conversation with someone more than five feet away would likely be difficult. That range is roughly equivalent to vehicle traffic or a running shower, with the max power setting being a notch louder.

Design and Usability

Usability is just as easy as you would expect from a cordless stick vacuum, with some additional features. The standout feature is the extension wand that can pivot 180 degrees near the center. This is great for storage, but more importantly, it allows you to vacuum under furniture without bending down to reach it.

Setup involves a few parts and steps, though about half as many as the Shark Stratos upright model. After removing the plastic bags from the items, the whole setup process takes around five minutes.

The vacuum weighs 8.9 pounds, which is typical for a cordless vacuum at this level. In hand, it can feel a little heavier at times, but nothing too dramatic. All the parts and overall design feel extremely sturdy, which adds a bit of heft. The height is fairly standard, but with the extension wand bent at 180 degrees, it can be stored at a height of just 26 inches.

Controls and Maintenance

Controls are extremely minimal on the Shark Stratos. The LCD only shows the battery life as a percentage and an icon for each cleaning mode. Pressing the power button starts you on Clean Sense IQ mode, shown at the top of the screen. You can switch to Eco mode and Boost mode in that order by pressing the mode select button located below the power button.

Maintenance is fairly straightforward. Emptying the dust bin and checking for clogs are required as needed. Shark recommends cleaning the HEPA post filter once a year, and the pre-motor foam and felt filters once a month. In both cases, only water should be used, and the filters should be left to air dry for 48 hours. Shark also provides detailed instructions for cleaning the sensors, as the Clean Sense IQ can sometimes seem wonky.

There are very few accessories included with the Stratos. The duster crevice tool has a brush attachment that can extend to the head or be stored below if the brush is not needed. The anti-allergen brush is designed for dusting and can flip around to dust under as well as on top of surfaces. More accessories are compatible with the Shark Stratos Cordless, but they would come with an extra price.

Buying Advice

The Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H is an excellent cordless stick vacuum that earns a strong recommendation. Its nearly perfect hair cleaning performance is a standout feature, removing all hair from carpet without leaving any tangled in the brush roll. The long Eco mode runtime of about 80 minutes on a single charge makes it practical for whole-home cleaning, while Clean Sense IQ provides automatic suction adjustment with a runtime of around 46 minutes.

The pivoting wand is a genuinely useful feature for anyone who wants to clean under furniture while staying standing straight. The vacuum’s powerful suction, confirmed by wind speed measurements that exceed the corded model, makes it a capable performer across different floor types.

The main considerations are the noise level, which is on the louder side, and the tendency for smaller debris to be affected by the high airflow. The limited number of included accessories may also be a factor for some buyers. However, for those looking for a powerful cordless vacuum with excellent hair pickup and smart features, the Shark Stratos Cordless is a compelling choice.

Conclusion

The Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H delivers on its promise of corded-level power in a cordless format. Its exceptional hair pickup, strong suction, and useful pivoting wand make it a versatile cleaning tool. While it is loud and has some minor issues with smaller debris, its overall performance places it among the best cordless stick vacuums available. For pet owners and anyone seeking a powerful, convenient cordless vacuum, this model is well worth considering.
