Ryobi Tri Power Light Tripod Base Review: More Than Just a Light Stand

A tripod that accepts three power sources and swaps between Ryobi lights, fans, radios, and more. Here is what works and what does not.

Introduction

Most work light tripods are one-trick products: a light on a stand, nothing more. The Ryobi Tri Power Light Tripod Base takes a different approach. It is a tripod that supports the included Ryobi work light, but its top mount accepts other Ryobi attachments too, and it can be powered in three different ways. That combination makes it one of the more flexible accessories in the brand’s lineup.

Design and Build Quality

At first glance it looks like a standard light tripod. The legs are thick and solid, and there is a leg release lever that makes folding and unfolding simple. A telescoping section with two clips near the top extends the stand to a maximum height of 7 feet.

Out of the box, the sliding mechanism is not the smoothest. It improves noticeably with use, to the point where extending and collapsing becomes genuinely easy. There is also a level bubble built in, a small touch that shows the design has been thought through.

Power Options: Three Ways to Run It

The name Tri Power refers to the three power sources. First, you can plug it into a standard outlet using the cord that connects at the back where a battery would normally sit, giving you unlimited continuous runtime. Second, it runs on an 18V Ryobi battery. Third, and this is the detail many owners have been asking for, it also accepts a 40V battery.

The included light head is extremely bright, with multiple output settings including medium and low, adjustable light panels, and a hanging hook on the body. It is a capable light in its own right, but it is only the starting point for this product.

The Swappable Head: The Real Party Trick

Here is where the Tri Power earns its keep. The light head detaches via an unlock button: press, slide, and lift it off. The mount accepts other Ryobi tools in its place. In practice that means you can swap the light for a fan, a radio, a bug zapper, or an air pump.

The included light is shaped like a Ryobi 18V battery on its back, which is what allows the interchangeable mounting. You can even raise the head and clamp smaller tools into it, such as a ratchet for working in awkward spots under a car, or a portable inflator positioned at a convenient height instead of on the ground.

What It Cannot Do

There are a couple of limitations worth knowing before buying. The head rotates through a limited arc: it tilts up and down, but it does not rotate fully backward, and twisting it beyond its stop risks damaging it. If you want a full 360-degree rotation, this will frustrate you.

Build quality is also worth tempering expectations on. This is not the most heavy-duty light tripod available. The legs are beefy and reassuring, but the latch mechanism at the head is not the tightest out of the box. The good news is that the latch screws can be adjusted to tighten things up, though you may want to do that before first use.

Buying Advice

This is an easy recommendation for anyone already in the Ryobi battery ecosystem, particularly 18V owners who also own or plan to own a 40V tool. Being able to run the same stand plugged in, on 18V, or on 40V covers nearly every work situation, and the swappable head turns a dedicated light tripod into a flexible platform for fans, radios, and more. If you only ever need a single fixed light on a stand and want maximum rigidity, a more conventional heavy-duty tripod may suit you better.

Conclusion

The Ryobi Tri Power Light Tripod Base is a smart, consumer-focused design that solves a real complaint: being stuck with one giant tripod for one purpose. With three power options, a genuinely bright included light, and a mounting system that accepts multiple Ryobi tools, it offers a lot of flexibility for the price of a single accessory. Just plan on a little break-in and a quick latch adjustment out of the box.
