Ryobi 18V ONE+ High Performance Edge Battery: A Real Power Upgrade for Your Existing Tools

Ryobi's High Performance Edge battery brings 21700 cells and tabless design to the 18V ONE+ system, delivering faster drilling and cutting in real-world tests.

Introduction

Ryobi has launched a new flagship battery for its 18V ONE+ system, and it is not just another capacity bump. The 18V ONE+ High Performance Edge battery introduces two significant design upgrades that change how much power your existing tools can pull from the pack. To see whether the difference is actually noticeable, we put it head to head against a standard 4Ah battery using two core tools from Ryobi’s HP brushless lineup: a hammer drill and a 6-1/2 inch circular saw.

What Makes the Edge Battery Different

The High Performance Edge pack uses 21700 cells, larger than the cells found in most standard power tool batteries. The larger cell keeps the same series grouping, five cells per row in an 18V (20V max) pack, while increasing capacity and the amount of power the battery can transfer to the tool.

The second major upgrade is tabless cell connections. This design allows the battery to deliver more power while running cooler, and it also enables faster charging and significantly longer service life.

Compatibility is not a concern. Ryobi’s 18V ONE+ system now covers more than 300 products, and the long-standing commitment holds here too: every 18V ONE+ battery works with every 18V ONE+ tool, including the Edge pack. All tools benefit, but you will notice the biggest difference with more power-hungry tools.

There may be more on the horizon as well. Edge design appearing in the 40V system could make those tools more efficient and boost power even further, which matters as more areas look for gas engine replacements.

Drill Test Results

The first test was a standard drilling test: a 2-inch self-feed bit through a pine 2x4, starting in low gear. With the standard 4Ah battery, the drill completed the hole in 6.95 seconds. With the Edge battery, the time dropped to 5.52 seconds, a meaningful increase.

High gear told a starker story. The standard battery stalled roughly halfway through the hole. On the next attempt it punched through in 3.06 seconds, but the Edge battery made it significantly further on its initial try and showed clearly more confidence under load. Repeated attempts with the standard pack confirmed the gap was not a fluke. The Edge pack was the obvious winner in drilling.

Circular Saw Rip Cut Test

The second test pushed a 6-1/2 inch circular saw through a full 8-foot rip cut in double-stacked 3/4 inch OSB, one of the tougher asks for a saw of this size. The saw was pushed as fast as it could reasonably maintain RPMs, with times called for each run.

The standard 4Ah battery stalled about two feet in on the first attempt. On a retry it nearly finished, stalling about six inches from the end, with a time of 2:56.3 and clear signs the saw was struggling to maintain speed.

The Edge battery completed the same cut in 2:14.1, and on a second run it posted 1:54.1 while maintaining RPMs well. There were a few moments of bogging under the load, but the pack found extra reserves when pushed hard and drove through the cut decisively.

Buying Advice

With the standard 4Ah battery, these tools will still get the job done. You may simply have to work a little slower and accept some stalls on demanding cuts. The true advantage of the Edge pack is that it lets your tools work harder, within reason, and it showed in every test we ran.

For DIYers and value-minded pros already invested in the 18V ONE+ platform, the Edge battery effectively revitalizes the tools you already own. The High Performance Edge battery is available for $129 at The Home Depot.

Conclusion

The Ryobi 18V ONE+ High Performance Edge battery backs up its claims with real, measurable gains: faster drilling, deeper high-gear performance, and quicker rip cuts, all while running cooler thanks to its tabless design. If you own power-hungry 18V ONE+ tools, this is one of the most meaningful battery upgrades the platform has seen.
