From a hybrid running vest and ultra-light cap to anti-chafe briefs and SPF moisturizer, these are the running products that earned a spot in our monthly rotation.

Introduction

Every month we test a pile of running kit, and most of it fades from memory. A few pieces, though, keep earning their place in the rotation. This month’s essentials list covers layering, sun protection, anti-chafe comfort, nutrition and a pair of shades that finally replaced a trusty five-pound beater. Here is what stood out and who each pick is really for.

Brooks Shield Hybrid Vest

The Brooks Shield hybrid vest won us over for cool-weather layering. Worn over a base layer, it warms the core while keeping the arms free, and the fit is slightly trim without feeling restrictive. It is not a hardcore technical vest: the top pocket is best reserved for keys, and the zippered side pockets are more about secure storage than load hauling. For easy runs and tempo efforts, though, it proved genuinely comfortable.

If your running wardrobe leans casual and you want one extra layer that handles most paces, this is an easy recommendation.

Janji AFO Hyper Light Cap

Janji has built a reputation on sustainable materials and bold colors, and the AFO Hyper Light cap fits the brand pattern. Made from recycled polyester, it weighs in under 90 grams and sits low on the head with a brim that stays put when flipped up. The adjuster toggle is easy to use on the move, the sun protection is strong for such a light cap, and it packs down small enough to disappear into a running belt or pocket. It has earned a permanent spot in a rotation that already has plenty of running hats.

66 North Gretia T-Shirt

The Gretia t-shirt from Icelandic brand 66 North is a multi-purpose piece that handles running, hiking and climbing alike. The fabric blends polyester, Tencel and spandex in a Polar Delta weave that is remarkably thin, light and breathable, so much so that it almost disappears once you put it on. It dries so quickly that it never develops that heavy, saggy, chafe-prone feel, and the flat side seams cut down on rubbing. Anti-odor treatment derived from mint keeps bacteria at bay in a more environmentally friendly way than silver-based approaches, and the shirt comes with a repairs-for-life guarantee.

One sizing note: the cut is snug and base-layer-like, and the fabric is slightly see-through and textured, so go up at least one size unless you want a tight fit. At 50 pounds it is a considered purchase, but the durability promise softens that.

Saxx Kinetic HD Briefs

The Saxx Kinetic HD briefs sit somewhere between base-layer shorts and running briefs, built for high-intensity efforts in a soft, stretchy, non-compressive fabric with flatlock seams. The standout feature is the BallPark pouch, a front hammock that keeps everything separated from the thighs. It feels odd at first, but over long distances it makes a real difference to chafe prevention.

The wide flat waistband has plenty of flex, never rolls, and the quick-drying material handles sweat well. At 34 pounds, these work for long training runs and shorter interval sessions alike.

LifeJacket Daily Protection SPF 30 Moisturizer

The LifeJacket Daily Protection SPF 30 moisturizer is a sun cream and moisturizer hybrid that behaves like a regular daily face cream with added sun protection. It applies easily, is not greasy and has no fragrance, though over-applying brings a slight white cast. It survived desert testing in 30-degree Dubai heat, with reapplication every two hours as you would expect from any SPF 30 product.

For runners with thinning hair or a shaved head, it doubles as an easy way to moisturize and protect the scalp under a cap, preventing the dry, flaky skin that exposed skin tends to develop. A quietly practical daily staple.

MyVegan Clean Vegan Protein

MyVegan Clean Vegan Protein mixes with water in a shaker, blends without grit or lumps, and tastes more like a cordial than a milky protein drink, which makes it a genuinely good summer option. A serving delivers 10 grams of protein from pea protein with just 2.8 grams of carbs, so it is a protein top-up rather than a recovery drink. The apple and elderflower flavor was the standout, with raspberry mojito and blackcurrant blood orange on the list to try next.

Pricing is fluid thanks to frequent offers: the 20-serving tub lists at 24.99 but flavors regularly sell for less, such as raspberry at 17.49. Sales are intermittent, so flavors do go out of stock and return.

MessyWeekend Tempo Sunglasses

After a year of running in five-pound supermarket sunglasses, stepping up to the MessyWeekend Tempo was an eye-opener. At 18.5 grams they are light enough that you forget they are on your head after a run, the field of vision is excellent with no frame intrusion, and they stayed put without pressing at the temples. The warm-toned lens makes overcast days look like an Instagram filter, and the range includes dark green frames plus black, orange and blue polarized lens options.

At 91 pounds they are not cheap, but the comfort and optical quality gap over budget pairs is real.

CEP Running Vest

CEP is best known for compression gear, and its running vest applies the same attention to detail to sun coverage. The neckline sits high, the fabric is very lightweight with small ventilation holes, and the seamless design with bonded edges at the armpits and neck keeps irritation to a minimum. The cut is fitted through the top and loose around the waist, reaching mid-hip, which makes it a strong option for taller runners. Built-in UV protection rounds out a very good summer piece, though the size range stops at large, which is a shame for inclusivity. At 49.95 it sits mid-price for a vest, justified by the finishing quality.

Saw Speed Shorts

The Saw Speed shorts are built for short races: think 5Ks and track sessions where you need no storage, maximum cooling and nothing that slows you down. They are astonishingly thin, with silicone grippers at the leg openings and a more structured waistband. The fit is close to cycling-short snug, and we sized up for a little more room, though confident runners could stay true to size with a sensible underwear choice.

Fractal Running Caps

Fractal offers more than 40 running cap designs, and the brand has become a familiar sight at races for good reason. The caps use lightweight, sweat-wicking materials, and the version with a thin mesh upper is particularly good at keeping your head cool. The fit is noticeably better than most running caps we have tried, which is rare in this category. They cost a bit more than basic caps but stay reasonable, and the design range suits anyone who wants a more fashionable look on the start line.

Buying Advice

Match each pick to the problem it solves. If cold-weather layering is your gap, start with the Brooks vest. For hot, sunny training blocks, the Gretia tee, CEP vest, LifeJacket SPF 30 and a Janji or Fractal cap work together as a system. Chafe-prone runners should look hard at the Saxx briefs, while racers chasing PBs will get the most from the Saw shorts. Protein-conscious and plant-based runners have easy wins in the MyVegan powder and the sunglasses upgrade is the kind of quality-of-life improvement you only appreciate once you make it.

Conclusion

None of this month’s picks is flashy, and that is the point. Comfortable layering, better sun protection, chafe-free miles and easy nutrition are the small margins that make training more enjoyable. Pick the one that addresses your biggest current annoyance, and you will likely feel the difference on the very next run.
