The Roborock Saros 20 Sonic is a new member of the premium tier S7 series, which carries the highest feature sets and automations in the Roborock lineup. Unveiled at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, this model was put through several weeks of testing to see whether it could earn a spot among the top robot vacuums available.

While the base model S7 MaxV uses dual spinning mop pads, the Sonic version features a flat pad that uses ultrasonic vibrations for scrubbing, which is how this model got its name. S7 models come with premium features at a premium price, so the Sonic sits on the high end of what you would expect to pay for a robot vacuum.

The Roborock Saros 20 Sonic is best suited for households that want a comprehensive, hands-off cleaning experience. Its strong vacuuming performance, smart navigation, and extensive dock automations make it a compelling choice for tech-savvy users who appreciate granular app controls and smart home integration.

This model is a good fit for homes with hard floors and medium-pile carpets, where its vacuuming strengths shine. It also works well for users who want a robot that can handle low-profile furniture, thanks to its retractable lidar turret that reduces overall height.

However, the Sonic may not be the best choice for homes with significant pet hair or frequent dried-on messes on hard floors, given its weaker performance in those specific areas.

Vacuuming Performance

The Saros 20 Sonic performed admirably at its main job of sweeping debris of all different sizes from both hard floors and carpets. It was especially impressive in the carpet deep clean test, where sand is embedded into medium-pile carpet and the amount the robot can extract is measured. The Sonic achieved a very high score of 92%, which ranks as the fourth highest score ever measured on this test.

The brush system uses a divided main brush with a gap in the center to channel hair and debris into the dust bin without tangling. The side brush extends to sweep debris out of corners and is also designed to resist hair wrapping. In anti-tangle testing with 7-inch hair, the Sonic earned a perfect score without any of the hairs wrapping around the brush.

Pet hair pickup, however, was a weak point. In the flattened pet hair test, where 2.5-inch hair is compressed onto carpet, the Sonic only removed 78% of the hair. This is a lackluster score, below the average and below the base model S7 MaxV. Combined with a much smaller dust bin than average, the Sonic may not be the best fit for homes with a lot of pet hair.

Mobility and Threshold Climbing

Threshold climbing was a significant pro for the Saros 20 Sonic. It is equipped with Roborock’s Adapt to Lift Chassis 3.0, which allows it to climb a tiered threshold of 3.46 inches, or 88 mm. In threshold climbing tests using a single-tier barrier, the Sonic is supposed to be able to cross a single threshold of 45 mm. It cleared 57 mm, well over its official limit, tying with the base model S7 MaxV for the all-time highest threshold score.

The chassis lifting hardware also gives it an advantage on carpets. Roborock says it can clean carpets up to 1.18 inches thick, or 30 mm, without getting stuck. Despite this lifting capability, the hardware doesn’t affect the robot’s size as might be expected. It can still achieve a low profile when its lidar navigation turret is retracted, going down to 3.13 inches, about 80 mm. This low height gives the robot more access under low-lying furniture like sofas and beds.

Obstacle Avoidance

The Saros 20 Sonic uses a combination of technologies called Reactive AI 3.0 to detect and recognize objects in its path. An AI-powered RGB camera is trained to recognize household items and stains for targeted cleaning. This is layered with 3D structured light and Roborock’s VertiBeam lateral sensor.

This system proved effective in testing. Between standard and torture tests, the Sonic avoided 19 out of 24 possible obstacles, beating both the base model S7 MaxV and the average. This makes it a reliable choice for homes with cables, shoes, and other common floor obstacles.

Battery Efficiency

Battery efficiency was another pro for the Saros 20 Sonic. In testing, it was able to cover more square meters per 1% of battery life than the average. The retracting lidar navigation efficiency was right around the average, but with the efficient battery life, the robot could cover a higher estimated square feet per charge than the base model S7 MaxV.

Dock and Automations

The dock is a major pro, packed with features and automations. Roborock’s new RockDock design washes the mop pad with boiling temperature water and dries it with 131°F, which is 55°C. This hot air system also dries the dust bin channel, helping to prevent moisture from causing clogs in the debris areas of the dock.

The station also supports mop drop, where the robot can leave the mop in the base for vacuum-only runs. The mop pad can be washed independently while the robot is vacuuming to save time. The dock includes an automatic detergent dispenser and refills the robot’s water tank with warm water for mopping.

App and Smart Features

Roborock’s app is a standout feature. It offers an intuitive interface with granular controls over the robot. The app supports room customizations, schedules, no-go zones, and robot suction and water settings. The AI smart plan has been updated for those who prefer the robot to make cleaning decisions.

The Sonic is Matter compatible for smart home integration. An onboard voice assistant allows for verbal commands, and the camera can be accessed from the app for live video monitoring and pet finding.

Mopping Performance

The mopping features on the system are high-tech. The pad vibrates at 4,000 vibrations per minute and applies 14 Newtons of pressure. It extends to the side for coverage along the edges of walls and near furniture, and it can lift high enough to vacuum thick carpets without getting them wet.

However, the mopping results themselves were somewhat weak. Flat pads are generally better for light cleaning and have consistently struggled in dried stain removal. In the dried stain test, the Sonic got a low score compared to the average and to the S7 MaxV’s more effective spinning mop pad design. Similar results were seen in a coffee-only test.

In the water penalty test, it left behind less than the average amount of water, which is usually a good thing because it can help prevent streaks. But in this case, more water might have been better. The combined mopping score was well below average and below the S7 MaxV’s spinning pads, which scored well above average.

Buying Advice

The Roborock Saros 20 Sonic is a strong vacuum with comprehensive docking automations, above-average mobility, and strong intelligence features. It earned a spot on the top 20 robot vacuums list despite its mopping drawbacks.

For households without significant pet hair concerns, this model offers excellent vacuuming performance, especially on carpets, and a feature-rich dock that minimizes maintenance. The smart navigation and app controls add to its appeal for tech-savvy users.

However, if your home has pets that shed heavily or you frequently deal with dried-on messes on hard floors, the Sonic’s weaker pet hair pickup and flat pad mopping performance may be a drawback. In those cases, a model with spinning mop pads might be a better fit.

The Roborock Saros 20 Sonic delivers impressive vacuuming, smart navigation, and a dock full of useful automations. Its strong carpet cleaning, excellent threshold climbing, and effective obstacle avoidance make it a compelling premium option.

The main trade-off is the flat pad mopping system, which struggles with dried stains compared to spinning pad designs. For users who prioritize vacuuming performance and smart features over intensive mopping, the Saros 20 Sonic is a worthy consideration.
