Roborock Q7 M5 vs Q7 L5: Which Budget Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo Wins?
Two similarly priced budget robot vacuums from Roborock, but testing reveals a clear winner for carpet cleaning, mopping, and overall value.
Introduction
Roborock has built a strong reputation in the budget robot vacuum segment, and the Q7 series has been a big part of that success. The Q7 M5 has been a bestseller since its release, and the newer Q7 L5 arrives as a follow-up with a similar list price of around $250. On paper, the two look nearly identical, but after several weeks of testing both robots side by side, some meaningful differences emerged.
This comparison breaks down the key areas where the two models diverge, from suction and carpet cleaning to mopping and hair handling. If you are deciding between these two budget-friendly robots, the results may surprise you.
Design and Hardware: Two Very Similar Robots
Both the Q7 M5 and the Q7 L5 sit at the low budget end of the robot vacuum market, with a similar list price of around $250. They are often available for even less during sales. The M5 has an optional Plus version that includes an auto-empty dock for about $100 more, while the L5 does not offer that option. Both models come in black or white.
The hardware is largely shared between the two. Each robot uses a fixed side brush to sweep debris toward the suction port, and both rely on the same bristled main brush in a floating housing. That housing includes an active hair removal system, and the onboard dust bin is a generous 400 ml on both models. They also stand at about 3.9 inches tall, or 99 mm, which helps them fit under most furniture.

Both robots include Carpet Boost, which automatically increases suction when carpet is detected. This is a useful feature at this price point, and it contributed to strong results in suction testing for both models.
Cleaning Performance: Carpets, Suction, and Hair
When it came to the main job of sweeping debris from hard floors, both robots performed well, picking up debris of different sizes without too much scattering. The M5 did seem to do better at removing fine debris from the surface of carpets. However, in a carpet deep clean test where sand was embedded into medium-pile carpet, the L5 actually came out ahead, removing 80% of the sand. The M5 scored just below average in that same test.
Suction was a major strength for both robots. Roborock advertises the L5 with 8,000 Pa in its highest setting, while the M5 is rated at 10,000 Pa. Both performed extremely well in suction testing, with scores that would be considered great at any price. The L5 clocked in at over twice the average suction rating, while the M5 ranked as the 14th highest suction score on record. Airflow was slightly below average for both, but the L5 had a marginally higher CFM rating.

Hair handling was a weaker area for both models. In a flattened pet hair test, the M5 scored slightly below average, which was not great but not terrible. The L5, however, received a shockingly low score, removing only 12% of the hair. That result is well below the previous worst score on record of 29%. The same outcome appeared across multiple runs, so it was not a one-off fluke.
In a separate 7-inch hair tangle test, both robots struggled. The main brush design includes a jaw scraper comb intended to pull hair off the brush, but it did not work well in practice. The M5 had 43% of the hair tangle around the brush, much worse than the 21% average. The L5 did even worse, with 56% of the hair getting tangled. Homes with a lot of long hair will likely require regular brush maintenance on either model.
Mopping Performance: A Clear Difference
Both robots use similar mopping hardware, with a basic flat mop pad and an electronic water tank offering three flow settings. The pad does not lift over carpet, so it needs to be removed before vacuuming rugs or carpeted areas. This means both robots require separate vacuum-only passes for rugs and separate runs for mopping hard floors.
The mopping results, however, were very different. In testing, two things were measured: how well the robot removes dried-on stains and how much water it uses. The L5 earned an above-average stain removal score of about 128 points, but it used an excessive amount of water, more than three times the average. That heavy water usage significantly lowered its overall mopping rating, and it ended up with the second lowest combined mopping score ever recorded.

The M5 performed much better. It earned an excellent dried stain score of 158 points while using about twice the average amount of water. That is still more than ideal, but it was not nearly as problematic as the L5. The M5 landed much closer to average in its combined mopping score, making it the stronger choice for anyone who plans to use the mop function regularly.
Navigation, Battery, and App Features
Neither robot has a dedicated obstacle avoidance system, but both are equipped with top-mounted LiDAR navigation. This is a notable advantage, as top-mounted LiDAR tends to perform better in testing than embedded LiDAR. Both Q7 models scored well above average in navigation efficiency tests. The M5 had slightly higher efficiency than the L5, but both crushed the average score, meaning they map rooms and follow logical, time-saving cleaning paths better than most competitors.
Battery life was another strong point. Based on battery capacity and navigation efficiency scores, the L5 is estimated to clean about 1,465 square feet per charge. That is roughly 100 square feet more than the M5 and about 300 square feet more than average. Both models support Recharge and Resume, allowing them to pause, recharge, and return to finish the job if they run low on battery.

The Roborock app is a shared strength. Both robots offer the same features, including multi-level mapping, individual room settings, cleaning sequence controls, No-Go and No-Mop Zones, zone and room cleaning, and integration with third-party voice assistants. This is a solid app experience at this price point.
Overall Buying Advice
When all the results are considered together, the Q7 M5 is the clear winner. It delivered better mopping performance and stronger overall vacuuming results, especially on carpet surfaces. Since the two robots are priced so similarly, the M5 offers better value for most households.
The M5 also has the option to upgrade to an auto-empty dock for about $100 more, which adds convenience and makes it the more versatile choice. The L5 does not offer that option at the time of this comparison.
That said, the L5 is not without merit. It performed better in the carpet deep clean test, has slightly higher airflow, and offers a bit more estimated cleaning range per charge. If those specific strengths matter more to you than mopping and overall carpet performance, the L5 could still be a reasonable pick.
