Ridge MagSafe Collection: Wallets, iPhone 15 Cases, and Upgrade Plates Reviewed
Ridge brings MagSafe compatibility to its popular wallet lineup with new wallets, iPhone 15 cases, and for the first time, standalone upgrade plates for existing wallets.
Introduction
One of the most popular wallets in the everyday carry scene just received a meaningful update: magnets. Ridge is now MagSafe compatible, and the new collection brings that functionality to the wallet line, the iPhone 15 case range, and, for the first time, standalone modular upgrade plates that convert a wallet you may already own.
This review covers everything in the collection, how the magnetic system works in practice, and a few trade-offs to weigh before you commit to carrying your phone and wallet as one unit.
Ridge MagSafe Wallet
The MagSafe Ridge wallets come in three aluminum finishes: Alpine Navy, Gunmetal, and Matte Olive, all priced at $125, with the premium Carbon Fiber 3K option starting at $175. That puts them roughly $25 to $30 above the standard versions, which is the premium for the added technology.
In essence, these are the same current Ridge wallet design, but the front plate now features a MagSafe-compatible neodymium magnet array finished in black polycarbonate to prevent scratching. The magnets let the wallet snap easily onto the back of a newer iPhone or any MagSafe-compatible phone case.

How the Magnetic Connection Works
MagSafe works by using an array of magnets in Apple’s accessories to align with a corresponding ring of magnets inside the phone. Alignment matters because wireless charging depends on perfect positioning and close distance for optimal performance.
Because alignment is so central to a strong connection, the MagSafe Ridge wallets also come with a strengthening tray. This tray has its own magnets, plus puzzle-piece cutouts shaped exactly for the wallet magnets to physically lock into. With its adhesive backing, you can attach it to the back of a phone case, directly onto an iPhone, or technically any other device to make it compatible with the MagSafe Ridge wallet.

The tray stops the wallet magnets from shifting laterally out of alignment, which makes the magnetic connection much stronger. Wireless charging with an Apple MagSafe charger does still work with the tray installed, though it can be a little finicky, which is simply the nature of magnetic charging.
One caveat worth knowing: the tray worked on a MagSafe-compatible car mount, but a heavy iPhone 15 Pro Pro Max could not physically stay mounted vertically with the tray on the case. If you use many different MagSafe accessories, the tray may not be worth the trade-off.
Ridge iPhone 15 Phone Case
Ridge also makes cases for the iPhone 15 series, available in two materials. There is a Kevlar version with a subtle weave appearance and a distinct lens shroud design, plus two leather models in the same colors as the popular leather Ridge wallets.
The cases are solid performers. They offer complete protection around the entire chassis, with a raised lip that extends past the edge of the screen and a similar raised edge for the camera array on the back. The USB-C port, microphone, and speakers on the bottom are fully surrounded, and all models include full tactile aluminum buttons with a satisfying clicky action. While many brands fumbled their iPhone 15 Pro cases when Apple introduced the action button, all buttons worked fine on an iPhone 15 Pro Max in these cases.

The leather cases have the better hand feel, but in testing the Kevlar option is slightly thinner, which appears to make the magnetic connection a little stronger. That said, you do not need a Ridge case specifically. The MagSafe wallet works on a naked iPhone and on an Apple MagSafe case too, though a thick, slippery transparent case weakened the connection, while a leather case held surprisingly solid.
Ridge MagSafe Upgrade Plates
If you already own a Ridge wallet, you do not need to buy a whole new one to get MagSafe compatibility. For the first time, Ridge sells a replacement upgrade set for existing wallets, and only two materials are available for these MagSafe plates right now: the popular Carbon Fiber 3K and the classic Gunmetal aluminum.
Because the Ridge wallet system is fully modular, it is possible to mix and match parts across wallets. One practical combination swaps the titanium back plates from an older wallet, the AirTag carbon cash strap from a current one, and a Carbon Fiber 3K front plate for maximum weight savings.

Why Carry a MagSafe Wallet at All
The clearest benefit is consolidation. With the wallet attached to the phone, you can more easily carry both together in one pocket or bag. That frees up a pocket for other items, such as a camera, and helps on days when you want the most minimal setup possible.
There are some unexpected perks too. A strongly attached wallet on the back acts almost like a small grip for a large Pro Max phone, and the magnets let the wallet stick to any magnetic surface, which opens up storage or display possibilities.
That said, there are genuine trade-offs to consider. A wallet on the phone changes its ergonomics, and whether that works depends on how many cards you carry, how you configure the wallet, and which phone model you have. Two-handed use becomes more comfortable, but single-handed operation suffers. If you have muscle memory for using a Ridge wallet, you will likely need to remove it from the phone first, which adds a step when accessing cards. Pocket carry also gets thicker if you stack many cards, cash, an AirTag strap, the strengthening tray, and a phone case.
Buying Advice
Ultimately this comes down to your philosophy on carrying your phone and wallet closely together. Plenty of people have been waiting for exactly this functionality, while others would rather keep the two separate. The good news is that nothing here forces your hand: the wallet, the case, and the wallet with the tray installed all perform very well as standalone items, so the versatility of the ecosystem means you can use the pieces independently whenever you prefer.
Conclusion
The Ridge MagSafe collection is a well-executed system rather than a single product. The wallets add genuine magnetic functionality for a modest premium, the iPhone 15 cases pair strong protection with tactile buttons and solid action button handling, and the upgrade plates let existing owners join in without replacing their wallet. If consolidating your carry appeals to you, this collection makes it easier than ever; if you prefer keeping phone and wallet separate, everything still works beautifully apart.
