Smart Bird Feeders
REI Birdie Smart Feeder GreenTuff Review: A Quirky, Eco-Focused Smart Bird Feeder
A recycled-plastic smart bird feeder with solar charging, dual seed holders, and AI bird ID that works well enough, with a few quirks to know first.
Introduction
Smart bird feeders keep getting more creative, and the REI Birdie Smart Feeder GreenTuff is one of the more distinctive designs we have handled. It pairs an AI camera with a triangular, modern-looking body made largely from recycled plastic and metal, backed by a solar panel for continuous charging. After unboxing, assembling, mounting, and running it for several days, it captures good bird media and does what a smart feeder should, with a few quirks worth knowing about before you buy.
What Makes the GreenTuff Different
REI positions this feeder around AI bird identification, simple installation, live view, dual seed holders, a solar panel, exceptional durability, and eco-friendly construction. The body is crafted from recycled plastic, which is almost certainly where the GreenTuff name comes from, and it has that recognizable speckled recycled-plastic texture.
The design is genuinely unusual. REI previously released a smart birdhouse with a similarly modern aesthetic, and this feeder follows the same design language. It is a large unit, heavier than most smart feeders, and the front camera module attaches magnetically, which is a nice touch. The package also includes a set of illustrated bird trading cards with species info, a small extra that adds some charm to the unboxing.

Design and Build Quality
A lot of the hardware here is metal, not plastic. The perch is solid metal, the stand is metal, and even the yellow front piece is metal. That means squirrels are not going to chew through it and raccoons are not going to bend it. Between the thicker recycled plastic and the metal components, this is a well-built, substantial feeder.
The dual seed compartments are a practical feature. You can fill one side with a standard mix and the other with something like thistle, letting you attract a couple of different types of birds at once. Small grid plates sit in the seed trays, apparently so moisture can drain through.
One caveat: this feeder is heavy even before you fill it with seed. During testing it visibly bent a thinner pole, so you will want a sturdy mounting location. The included instructions actually show a wall-mounted setup with drywall anchors, which suits its weight better than a light-duty pole.

App, Camera, and AI Bird ID
Setup follows the familiar pattern: charge the camera, scan the QR code, connect to Wi-Fi, and bind the device in the app. The connection went smoothly. Note that most feeders in this class, including this one as far as we could tell, work on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so check compatibility with your network before buying.
New users get a 60-day exclusive membership trial that includes history video, chat, and bird identifications. As with most smart feeders, the most important functions, like live view and motion recordings, work without paying for the subscription, but it is worth checking exactly what is gated behind the paid tier for your own use.
The camera captures good footage. In several days of testing we got solid clips of house finches, house sparrows, chickadees, and cardinals. The live view works well, and there is an SD card slot for local storage plus adjustable recording settings, night mode, firmware updates, and device sharing in the app. The solar panel showed a full 100% charge during testing.

The AI identification is, as with essentially every smart feeder, hit or miss. It correctly identified a house finch and a female house sparrow, but it misidentified a black-capped chickadee as a Carolina chickadee and got a female cardinal completely wrong. One reference image in the app’s bird book also showed the wrong bird. There is a chat-based Q&A feature for wild bird knowledge, which is a fun extra but also deserves a grain of salt. The wide-angle lens also produces noticeable fisheye warping, common to most feeders in this category.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The biggest practical consideration is weight. With metal components and thick recycled plastic, this is a hefty feeder, and a thin pole may struggle. Mount it somewhere sturdy or use the wall-mount approach the instructions recommend.
Placement also matters for the motion detection. On the first day, the feeder recorded mostly blowing leaves rather than birds. Choose a spot without a lot of moving vegetation behind it to keep recordings focused on actual birds, save battery, and avoid scrolling through junk clips.
A few components, like the top cover and the small front metal piece, simply pop off rather than locking in, so they are easy to misplace during cleaning or refilling. Tethered or attached parts would be a welcome improvement. Also make sure to use the included solar panel and cable rather than mixing in other hardware, since charging requirements can differ between products.

For permanent installs, wrap and secure the solar cable neatly rather than leaving it hanging. And if you use the perch, experiment with its orientation: it works both ways, but with the small perch sticking up, birds sit nicely framed in front of the camera.
Buying Advice
The GreenTuff makes the most sense for buyers who care about durable, eco-friendly construction and want a feeder that will survive weather, squirrels, and raccoons. If AI accuracy is your top priority, temper your expectations, since no smart feeder we have tested nails identification consistently. If you mainly want reliable live view, good recorded clips, solar charging, and a feeder with real personality, this one delivers.
Conclusion
The REI Birdie Smart Feeder GreenTuff is quirky, memorable, and genuinely well built. Its recycled plastic and metal construction, dual seed holders, solar panel, and magnetic camera module set it apart, while the AI identification remains typical for the category: occasionally right, occasionally wrong, always entertaining. Mind its weight when mounting, pick a calm background for motion detection, and you should get plenty of enjoyable bird media from it.
