Papier Plume Rougarou Review: A Dark Gray Ink With Cajun Character

A limited edition pepper-gray fountain pen ink from Papier Plume, tested for shading, sheen, bleed, drying time, and water resistance.

Introduction

Papier Plume’s Rougarou is a limited edition 30 ml fountain pen ink named after the Cajun folklore werewolf said to prowl the swamps around New Orleans. The name derives from “loup garou”, the French word for werewolf. The ink launched as part of a set that sold out within days, but the ink itself remains available individually on the Papier Plume site for a limited time at ten dollars.

The color is a pepper gray or wolf gray, and that description is what makes it interesting: it offers some deeper character while staying close to the dark inks most people already use. If you enjoy darker inks but want something a little different from a straight black, this is worth a close look.

How It Performs on Paper

On 52 gsm Tomoe River paper, regular applications showed very little bleed through. There is a bit of shading in lighter applications, and even with a super heavy application the ink stays bold and dark. Sheen is low, so this is not an ink you buy for glittering effects.

On Rhodia 80 gsm paper, ghosting and bleed were both low. Overall the shade reads as medium and the sheen as low, which keeps it practical for everyday writing.

Water Resistance and Chromatography

Papier Plume does not claim this ink is waterproof. In testing, it actually held up reasonably well when water was removed quickly, but a longer soak will cause problems, so treat it as water sensitive.

The chromatography was genuinely surprising for such a dark ink. Separation revealed grays along with yellows, blues, oranges, and lighter blues hidden inside the formula.

Drying times were moderate: between 10 and 15 seconds with an extra fine nib, and between 15 and 30 seconds with a medium nib. Flow was medium across the pens tested.

The Wax, Seal, and Accent Cream

The original set included the ink plus a few extras: sealing wax, a wax seal stamp featuring the werewolf, and an accent cream available in silver and gold. The wax works by melting roughly fifteen seconds’ worth, smearing it into a circle to extinguish the flame, then pressing the seal. One small design quibble: the stamp has no orientation mark, so you have to check which way you are holding it before pressing.

The cream is applied sparingly with a brush, a cotton swab, or a fingertip, and used as an accent to make the wolf on the seal stand out. It is a fun finishing touch if you enjoy sending sealed correspondence.

Pens Used for Testing

Rougarou was tested with three pens. First, a Bennu skulls and roses model with an extra fine nib. Second, the Faber-Castell Loom with a medium nib, a pen with one of the standout steel nibs around. Third, the Pilot Custom Heritage 912 with a music nib, whose multiple slits produce a distinctive line. All three handled the ink well, which suggests it is an easy ink to live with across different nib types.

Things to Consider Before Buying

This is a limited edition, so availability is genuinely time limited. The 30 ml bottle is small, though the ten dollar price keeps it accessible. If you need waterproof writing, look elsewhere, since water resistance is only incidental. And if you prefer inks with strong sheen or high shading drama, the low sheen here may not excite you.

Buying Advice

Papier Plume Rougarou is a dark gray with some deeper character that works well for someone looking to mix things up a bit from a straight black. Papier Plume prices its inks reasonably and releases interesting limited editions regularly, and this one fits that pattern. If darker inks are your thing and you want a subtle twist on black, pick it up while it is still available.

Conclusion

Rougarou delivers a well-behaved, low-bleed pepper gray with medium flow, modest drying times, and a folklore-inspired identity that gives it charm beyond the color itself. It will not replace your everyday black, but it makes an excellent second dark ink, and the price makes trying it an easy decision.
