Padua Pluma Zela Wallet V2 Review: A Handmade Minimalist Wallet Built Around Cash

The Zela Wallet V2 is a handmade vertical minimalist wallet from the Netherlands with four pockets, premium Italian leather, and clear upgrades over the original.

Introduction

The Zela Wallet from Padua Pluma Company is technically a version two, but it is effectively the only Zela Wallet available now, as the original has been fully replaced. Padua Pluma Company is based in the Netherlands, and the Zela Wallet arrived in a wax-sealed paper pouch with handwritten notes, which sets the tone for what is a genuinely handmade product.

The spec sheet reads like a small-batch workshop project: four pockets that hold up to nine cards and up to 10 bills folded in half, made from full grain waxy oil pull-up vegetable tan leather from Buttero and Carlo, with an outer piece in full grain vegetable tan leather. Everything is hand stitched with 1 mm waxed flat polyester thread. There are currently 12 thread color choices and five leather color combinations, with custom colors available on request. The review sample is a dark green Buttero with brown Buttero pull-up.

What Changed From Version One

Several improvements separate the Zela Wallet V2 from the original:

  • One more pocket (four instead of three)
  • Stronger hardware, with a noticeably firmer snap
  • An optional brass feather bead for the paracord lanyard
  • A redesigned, stronger loop covering the flap, made from thicker leather that runs all the way down to the snap
  • A sturdier upper left corner, no longer rounded
  • An improved overall finish

The stronger snap is immediately noticeable, and the thicker leather loop that extends right into the snap adds real strength to the paracord anchor point. These are practical refinements rather than cosmetic tweaks.

Leather Quality and Craftsmanship

The leather comes from Italian tanneries, full grain vegetable tan stock that should last a lifetime with care. The waxy oil pull-up leather is the standout material here, showing a rich depth and character as it flexes.

The hand saddle stitching runs cleanly around the cash pocket and the paracord loop, the edges are hand burnished, and the leather cuts look clean throughout. The hardware has an antique brass look that suits the leather nicely. One caveat from the smell test: the Buttero leather has a pleasant leather scent, but the outer leather gives off very little of the classic leather smell, so buyers chasing that aroma should not expect much.

Styling and Design

The Zela Wallet is a vertical minimalist wallet with a flap that snaps over the top. Pocket layout is straightforward:

  • A front pocket for a most-used card
  • A middle pocket for the bulk of your cards
  • A dedicated cash compartment for bills folded in half
  • A rear pocket for another quick-access card

The extra fourth pocket is created by an additional folded insert of leather tucked and stitched around the main body, a simple and elegant construction choice. The trademark paracord lanyard on the loop remains, now with the option of a brass feather bead.

Branding is restrained: one stamp on the front and one inside the cash compartment, which is about as tasteful as it gets.

Everyday Use: Cards and Cash

Fully loaded with nine cards and 10 bills, the wallet stretches to its practical limit and the snap is under visible strain, though leather will relax over time. At a more realistic seven cards and five bills, the snap closes without any issue, cards in the middle pocket pull out easily with the fan method, and the whole wallet feels manageable.

The cash carrying is where this wallet shines. Bills folded in half go in and come out through the side without unsnapping the wallet, which makes it an excellent choice if you use cash daily.

The quick-access front and back pockets are the one weak point. You technically can remove a card without unsnapping, but the cutout is tight, and reinserting the card requires pressing it all the way down and sliding it in, which is fiddly. A cutout one or two millimeters deeper would fix it entirely.

Customization Options

Padua Pluma Company offers five leather color combinations, 12 thread colors, custom colors on request, and the choice of no bead, a brass feather bead, or another bead style for the paracord at a small extra cost. The brass feather bead on the sample is a genuinely nice touch.

Buying Advice

The Zela Wallet costs about €65 on the company website, roughly $76 US. If you carry cash every day, this is an easy recommendation: the always-accessible cash compartment is the best reason to buy it. If you are primarily a card user, be aware that reaching cards in the front and back pockets without unsnapping is possible but tight.

Conclusion

The Zela Wallet V2 is a well-made handmade minimalist wallet with top-tier Italian leather, clean hand stitching, and meaningful upgrades over the original. Its fiddly quick-access card pockets are a small nitpick in an otherwise excellent package, and for cash-first carriers it is one of the more compelling options around.
