Packed Arrow 35L Review: A Lightweight Travel Backpack That Gets the Details Right

A 35 L carry-on travel backpack with a novel laminated fabric, clamshell organization, and a weight just over 1 kg.

Introduction

It is rare these days to find a new travel backpack that genuinely feels different from everything already on the market. The Packed Arrow 35L manages it: a full-size 35 L carry-on bag with a long feature list, a minimalist and comfortable carry system, and a weight just over 1 kg (about 2.35 lb).

We put the Arrow through several shorter trips, including a two-day carry-on-only trip flying with Delta, combining it with the 16 L Packed Stash daypack as a packable companion bag. That pairing works particularly well, and it is how we would recommend running this setup.

Carry-on Fit and Real Capacity

The Arrow measures roughly 20 inches long, 12 inches wide, and 10 inches deep (50 x 30 x 24 cm). Those dimensions work perfectly as a carry-on: it fit in the overhead bin on every flight, and it could probably fit under some seats. It is a little big to use as a personal item, though.

To verify the stated capacity, the bag was filled with packing peanuts and transferred into a marked container, filling the front pockets separately since they hold their own volume. The result landed essentially spot-on at 35 L.

One small but telling detail: even empty, the bag holds its shape and stands up on its own, which is impressive for a pack this light. Depending on how you pack it and where the heavy weight sits, it also stands upright when loaded.

Materials and Hardware

The main exterior fabric is called Arowavee. It is not X-Pac, but it is a similar laminated fabric with a diamond pattern: stiff, waterproof, strong, and lightweight. Up close you can see a thin layer of ripstop on top with the diamond weave laminate below.

In practice it performs much like X-Pac, just in a very light version, which is how a 35 L bag manages to weigh only a little over 1 kg (2.35 lb).

External Organization

The Arrow is a clamshell-style bag, but the standout here is the pair of large external pockets, each with its own volume. The entire front section holds considerably more than you would expect.

The upper pocket is open and easy to access; on the trip it held a small electronics pouch. The lower pocket has almost the same volume, but its zipper is protected by a small waterproof flap, which makes it slightly harder to fit full-size pouches unless you fold the flap out of the way. It is a great home for everyday carry gear: a small umbrella, sunglasses, spare charging cords, and a battery pack all fit.

There is a single external side water bottle pocket, and it is excellent: large, lays flat, and very wide, with a stretchy section in the middle. It will hold just about any bottle, including a 40 oz Hydro Flask.

A favorite feature is the four tie-down straps, one at each corner. Each is a light cord with a small clip that stows in a discreet pocket and attaches to a fabric loop. Run the cord through a water bottle, clip it off, and the bottle will not fall out no matter which way the bag is facing.

Finally, there are two external access zippers into the main compartment, one on each side of the split top-and-bottom layout. These turn out to be genuinely useful, as covered below.

Carry System

The carry system is minimalist and lightweight: wide but relatively thin shoulder straps made from a higher-density foam that does not collapse under weight, plus an adjustable sternum strap. There are no top load adjusters and no hip belt.

The back padding is thin and flat, built from the same high-density foam, with decent air ventilation. The whole setup is stowable: unclip the shoulder straps and tuck them behind the back padding when pairing the bag with rolling luggage, and there is also a luggage pass-through sleeve for a suitcase handle.

Comfort was surprisingly good even when fully packed. The only time it felt uncomfortable was when loaded with absolutely everything: laptop, camera, e-reader, tablet, a full water bottle, and snacks. Anything less than that, and it carried well.

Interior Organization and Packing

The clamshell opens fully flat into two separate zippered compartments with a laptop sleeve in the middle. The interior is deliberately simple: rather than extra dividers and lining fabric, Packed puts the organization into the large exterior pockets and includes only one small interior zipper pocket. Part of the interior even skips lining material, which trims weight without hurting function.

Because the two compartments have zippered lids, packing cubes are optional. Rolled clothes fit everything except a light jacket into one side, while bulkier, heavier items like a toiletry kit, tablet, and camera gear go on the other.

The two external zippers earn their keep here. The Stash daypack is designed to fit inside the Arrow, so you can open the top zipper and slide it in and out as you go. Alternatively, dedicate a compartment to items you need during the day, such as a jacket, toiletry bag, or camera, and reach them without opening the whole bag.

Buying Advice

The Packed Arrow 35L makes sense if you fly carry-on only, value a sub-1.1 kg bag that still holds 35 L, and prefer organization on the outside rather than inside. If you routinely pack extremely heavy, the minimalist carry system is the first thing to feel the strain. Pairing it with the 16 L Stash as a packable day bag is a combination worth considering.

Conclusion

Great organization, a clamshell design, large exterior pockets, and comfortable backpack carry, all in a surprisingly light 2.35 lb package with a full 35 L of verified capacity. It is easily one of the most interesting travel backpacks of the year.
