Olight OKnife U1 Pro Review: A Utility Knife With a Bit Driver Built In

The U1 Pro adds a 4mm bit driver to Olight's toolless utility knife, doubling its everyday usefulness. Here's how it holds up.

Introduction

Utility knives are one of those tools most people already own, which makes it harder for a new one to justify a place in the rotation. Olight’s OKnife division has been iterating in this space for a while, and its latest release, the U1 Pro, takes the utility knife one more step forward. It keeps the replaceable-blade format of the standard U1, but adds something that more than doubles its usefulness: a 4mm bit driver in the back.

What the U1 Pro Adds Over the Standard U1

Both the standard U1 and the U1 Pro use replaceable utility blades, so the core cutting function is unchanged. What sets the Pro apart is the integrated bit holder at the rear of the handle, turning a single-purpose cutter into a small two-in-one tool you can genuinely carry daily.

The upgrade approach is conservative in the right way: Olight didn’t redesign the knife, it extended it. If you already like the utility knife format, the bit driver is the kind of addition that makes the standard version feel incomplete in hindsight.

The Bit Driver: The Big Upgrade

The bit driver sits in the back of the handle with a small magnet inside to hold the bit. It ships with a double-sided bit featuring a small slotted tip on one end and a number zero Phillips on the other. Those double-sided bits will look familiar if you own something like a compact precision screwdriver set, where they’re the standard format.

It’s a small touch, but a genuinely practical one. If your work involves a particular Torx or screw size, you can simply swap in the bit you actually need and keep it stored in the knife.

Using the Bit Driver Day to Day

The magnet holds the included double-sided bits just fine. Standard 4mm bits from larger bit sets don’t reach far enough down to hit the magnet, but there’s a slight cone shape near the bottom of the holder that gives them a friction fit, and that holds reasonably well in testing.

There are limits worth knowing before you buy. Very large bits may or may not stay seated, and oversized bits certainly won’t allow the knife to close. Stick to the small double-sided format and the system works as intended.

Blade Changes Without Tools

The toolless blade design carries over from the standard U1. You loosen the pressure screw, the side panel sticks out slightly, and you can pull the blade to the side and release it from its cutouts. A small tool is included in case you overtighten, though there’s a stop on the screw so you’d have to force it to lose it entirely.

Seating the blade is simple: the back piece needs to stick out slightly to confirm it’s seated correctly, then you wind the screw down to press the bar across. It gets plenty tight without much force. Keep it snug rather than super tight, and the blade won’t shift even when the screw is slightly loosened.

The included blade is OKnife branded; the previous version shipped with Fiskars blades. Standard utility blades that fit the holder work fine, so replacements are easy to source.

Everyday Carry Fit and Finish

The U1 Pro comes in a G10 version with a carbon fiber overlay and a green Micarta version, and the Micarta is the standout for anyone who likes an old-school handle material. The deep carry pocket clip gives it a clear everyday-carry character, and it launches easily with an access lock.

Between the pocketable size, quick one-handed opening, and the built-in driver, this is the kind of knife that earns a permanent spot in a pocket rather than a drawer.

Buying Advice

Choose the U1 Pro over the standard U1 if you ever find yourself needing a small screwdriver while you’re out and about. The bit driver is the entire point of the upgrade, and it works well as long as you use the small double-sided bits it’s designed around.

If you prefer a handle material with more character, the green Micarta is an easy pick; the G10 with carbon fiber overlay suits a more modern look.

Conclusion

The Olight OKnife U1 Pro is a thoughtful evolution of the utility knife: same toolless replaceable-blade convenience, plus a magnet-secured 4mm bit driver that makes it far more useful day to day. For anyone who carries a utility knife regularly, the Pro version makes a convincing case as the new default.
