Introduction

Oknife, the cutlery division of Olight, has been quietly expanding its U1 Pro utility knife lineup, and the latest additions are all about handle materials. Alongside the existing aluminum, carbon fiber overlay G10, and titanium options, two new thermoplastic scales have joined the family: PEEK and Ultem. Both bring serious material credentials, and both push the price down compared to the metal versions, which makes the U1 Pro more approachable than ever.

If you have not handled a U1 or U1 Pro before, the short version is that Oknife is taking the utility knife into genuine pocket knife territory, with the features and feel people expect from a proper everyday carry folder.

Who This Knife Is For

The U1 Pro suits anyone who uses a utility knife regularly but wants something more refined than a disposable box cutter. It takes standard utility blades, locks up solidly, and feels good in the hand, so carrying it every day does not feel like a compromise compared to a traditional pocket knife.

Because the new thermoplastic handles are more affordable than the metal options, this is also a sensible entry point if you are curious about premium utility knives without committing to titanium pricing.

The New Handle Materials

The first of the two new options is PEEK, short for polyetheretherketone, in a muted, almost matte desert brown. This is a very strong thermoplastic commonly used to replace metal in the aerospace industry, with tremendous corrosion resistance, chemical durability, heat resistance, and strength that is remarkable for a plastic.

The second is PEI, better known as Ultem, in a translucent amber gold finish. It shares similar properties: heat resistance, durability, and exceptional strength. Ultem is gaining popularity, and it is easy to see why here. The translucent amber color gives it a distinctive aged, almost old-west character while still being a thoroughly modern material that machines well into all kinds of shapes and thicknesses.

Strengths That Carry Over

The core design is the same across handle flavors. The knife takes a regular utility blade held in place by a set screw. You can use a tool to tighten it, but leaving it slightly finger tight is generally enough to hold the blade securely, which makes swaps quick and easy.

The crossbar lock on the top is tremendously strong. Realistically, you would have to break the knife to make that locking mechanism fail, which is exactly the kind of confidence you want in a blade you use daily.

Things to Consider Before Buying

One feature worth understanding before you buy is the 4 mm bit driver built into the end of the knife. It ships with a single two-sided bit, a zero Phillips on one end and a small slotted driver on the other, and a matching bit set with roughly ten additional bits is available if you want to expand it.

If you plan to leave your own bits installed, there are some size limitations. A 3 mm hex bit fits but can contact the body when closed, so something around 2.5 mm or smaller is a safer choice. On the Torx side, a T15 drops right in, while a T20 will bind up. None of this is a dealbreaker, but it is worth knowing if you had specific bits in mind.

Buying Advice

The handle material is really the decision point. Aluminum comes in zombie green and zombie pink, carbon fiber overlay G10 brings a different texture, titanium remains the top-tier favorite, and the new PEEK and Ultem options trade metal for serious thermoplastic strength at a lower price. If you value the translucent amber look, Ultem is a genuinely characterful pick; if you want understated and tough, PEEK in desert brown is the practical choice.

Conclusion

The U1 Pro was already an exceptionally good utility knife, and the new PEEK and Ultem handles make it more affordable without giving up the features that make it carry like a real pocket knife. Between the strong crossbar lock, easy blade swaps, built-in bit driver, and now a wider range of handle materials, there has rarely been a better time to give this line a look.
