OKnife Heron L1 Review: A Chunky Wharncliffe Folder With Surprisingly Smooth Action

The OKnife Heron L1 pairs a matte black D2 wharncliffe blade with grippy G10 handles and action that outperforms knives costing far more.

Introduction

The OKnife Heron L1 is one of the newest folders in the OKnife lineup, launched as part of the OKBuy April flash sale running from April 16 to April 22, 2023. It is a big, meaty everyday carry knife with a distinctive wharncliffe blade, and it delivers the kind of fit and finish that has become typical for the brand.

If you like knives with real presence in the hand and a blade shape built for utility work, this one deserves a close look.

Blade and Cutting Performance

The Heron L1 carries a 3 and 5/8 inch wharncliffe blade made from D2 steel with a matte black titanium finish, roughly 3.2 millimeters thick. It is a chunky blade, but a small notch cut into the blade near the cutting surface makes the effective edge surprisingly slicey. Wharncliffe blades resemble a razor blade in profile, which makes them excellent for utilitarian tasks, and this one has seen plenty of box cutting duty.

D2 is a solid mid-grade steel for the price. It takes a sharp edge easily and holds it well, but it does need care in damp conditions. In humid or wet climates, wiping the blade after each use is essential to prevent corrosion.

Out of the box, the blade comes razor sharp. Despite its thickness, it cuts paper and cardboard cleanly thanks to that slicey edge geometry. The blade also features fairly aggressive jimping on the spine for a secure grip when choking up, plus a small notch that gives your thumb a comfortable resting spot during fine work.

One recurring design critique: the OKnife logo is printed quite large on the blade. Smaller, subtler markings like the small D2 print on the reverse side are much easier to live with.

Handle and Grip

The black G10 handle scales use a coarse, grippy texture that inspires confidence in wet or oily hands. The handle measures about 4 and 5/8 inches long and provides an easy four-finger grip, with a shape that widens toward the rear like a gun stock. That flare makes the knife feel secure and comfortable in hand.

Overall length comes in at about 8 and 3/8 inches, with a cutting edge around 3 and 3/8 inches long. At 5.3 ounces (roughly 152 grams), it is not a lightweight, but it remains manageable for its size.

Action and Lockup

This is where the Heron L1 genuinely shines. The knife uses a rear flipper with a modest tab that is not oversized for the knife’s scale, and it offers multiple deployment options: a flick from the rear flipper, a “Spidey flick” using the large cutout in the blade, a slow gentleman’s opening, and even a Spidey drop thanks to that cutout.

The locking mechanism is a liner lock, and the action feels fantastic. The drop shut is smooth enough to rival knives costing double or even triple the price. Whatever else you might say about OKnife, build quality and action are consistently on point across the lineup.

Pocket Carry and Everyday Use

The Heron L1 includes a short deep-carry pocket clip that sits recessed inside the handle, so the knife rides low and discreetly in the pocket. Tension is not aggressive, but it is reasonably secure. There is also a lanyard hole at the rear of the handle for those who like to add a cord or fob.

The knife ships in a typical OKnife box and includes a decorative patch. Oddly, the patch features a toucan rather than a heron, which is a small quirk worth mentioning but hardly a dealbreaker.

Given its size and heft, this is a knife for someone who does not mind a substantial carry. If you prefer something small and light, it may feel like a brick in the pocket, though it still earns a strong recommendation on overall quality.

Buying Advice

The Heron L1 suits buyers who want a utility-focused wharncliffe folder with excellent action, grippy G10 handles, and easy-to-maintain D2 steel at a value price. Keep an eye on OKBuy flash sale windows, as the knife debuted as part of one. If you live in a humid climate, factor in regular blade care. For those who prefer smaller everyday carries, consider whether the 5.3-ounce heft fits your style first.

Conclusion

The OKnife Heron L1 is a chunky, capable folder that punches well above its price in action quality and out-of-box sharpness. Its size keeps it from topping every list, but as a heavy-duty utility carry it is very easy to recommend.
